Where the soil has been disturbed | Basel Abbas / Ruanne Abou-Rahme

"Where the soil has been disturbed" (2022-23) shows brittle dried thistles-most placed on concrete bricks. Thistles are often seen as undesirable plants. They are known for their tough thorns and purple flowers, which have given color to the lighting of the exhibition. The plant is also known for its resilience and for growing where the soil has been disturbed. When the thistle dies and begins to decay, it feeds minerals back into the earth, allowing other plants to flourish where one would expect nothing to grow. In this way it becomes a strong symbol that something new can arise.
