I'm starting at U of T in the fall for archeology and I'm kind of terrified, but your content got me super pumped to study this stuff formally. Another very useful and informative video, thank you! I wish you'd talk more about the competition in academic archaeology, moreso how to be competitive ourselves, as I've heard it's quite ugly and, in a sense, brutal.

With academia I can't speak about it extensively because I've never worked in that environment, however I can maybe ask my PhD friends for some advice or do another video with one where I can ask about it. I gasped a little when I heard where you got your degrees from. I'm a Canadian high school student with a lot of passion for the subject and researching universities that offer the program. I really like the look of the program at UofT but was disappointed by my options for my Master's and PhD (if I feel it necessary) in Canada, and actually was looking at Edinburgh. I think that's really cool. I definitely appreciate the advice in your videos.

Thanks, you don't need to just stay at one university for all your studies you can defintely move to wherever you think suits you best. Both of my universities had their strengths and weaknesses and I really enjoyed both programs. Thanks for watching and good luck!

I'm so glad I found your channel! You have so many useful videos :) I was thinking about doing my undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh. I know you did your Masters there, what's your overall opinion on its Archaeology Department?

I loved doing my Master's at the University of Edinburgh but I'd be lying if I said I chose it solely because of the department. I really wanted to live in the UK/Scotland, they had a masters in exactly what I wanted to study (human osteo) and I wasn't super keen on academia so I didn't choose somewhere with a top rated very demanding Archaeology program (UCL, Sheffield, Cambridge, etc.). My opinion of the department isn't very accurate because I had a very limited view (only 3 profs and 1 classroom) but the student archaeology society seemed very active and the one guy I knew who did the undergrad program liked it. Have you ever heard anything about the program at Trent in Peterborough? I live within driving distance so it would be handy to go there.

I have! I think one of my friends actually went on their field school in Belize and loved it. However my knowledge is pretty out of date so I don't know much more than that. I'd recommend contacting the school and going for a tour and chatting to students orpast graduates. Thanks for watching!

I have a BA and MA, when I applied for a master's degree. I applied to 5 programs. 4 in the uk and 1 in the us where I am from. I got into all 4 in the uk, but I was rejected by the us program I found that strange. I went to UCL for MA in artifact studies. I loved it even through the program was very cutthroat.

I've always been told that it is much harder to be accepted into US/Canada master's programs than UK ones so I didn't even bother as I was a good student but not top of the class. Glad you enjoyed your time at UCL, thanks for watching!

Hi, I know this is an old video now but I am starting a field archaeology MA (without a bachelors in archaeology) in the UK this year, but hope to migrate to BC in Canada soon. Seeing as you worked in the profession in both countries do you think Canadian employers would generally accept UK MA qualifications? Or would I be at a disadvantage. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks

Yes I would say they do, a degree is a degree I don't think they're overly fussy on where you got it from. As always the more field experience you have the better. Not sure if Canada does work visas for archaeologists though. Thanks for watching!

Hi, i am considering a BA in archeology in Norway. But i wonder how crowded the field is (internationally)? Is it any realistic chance of getting any job after BA? I heard ppl say MA is a must if one wants to work at Academia, but i am afraid I am not that "nerd", i recently quit on IT secuirity BA cuz it was too crazy in its abstract problems, I cant live like that. Is fieldwork in archeology - something that can be enough to live off? How often might one to hope for getting a job? I guess there is not enough excavation field jobs for 360 days a year.. The subject is all exciting, but i will have a loan to repay. I cant pick anything else like biology or economics, cuz i really dont want to be around engineering realm, or abstrac math realm. What do you think about it?

I did 2.5 years of paid fieldwork with minimal breaks in between in the UK so the work is definitely available year round anywhere the ground doesn't freeze it just depends where you are. I know people who've worked in archaeology with BAs, Masters, PhD's, or no degree at all. Hello! I'm a freshman in high school, and I wanted to know if undergraduate degrees in anthropology, history, or English hold the same weight as undergraduate degrees in archeology? *It's also good to note that I plan get my masters degree in archeology :)*

Kind of depends on what you want to do with them? I'd say an English degree might be a bit difficult to convert into an archaeology job, history or anthropology would be easier. Obviously an archaeology degree is best. Thanks for watching!

In your studies on the East and mesopotamia specifically did you studie Gobeli Tepe and other ancient sites? I'm most intestate in that era and older. Thanks just sub'd

I didn't study Golbekli Tepe, we were focused on Egypt and Mesopotamia (Ur, Akkadia, Sumer, etc.) specifically, I have heard of the sites but it wasn't covered in any of my courses. Thanks for watching and subbing!
