Where is my 5D Mark IV? More Camera Rumors

This is an update to a video I posted a few months ago about camera rumors. I decided to update with the latest and greatest info in addition to discussing Tony Northrup's recent video about his expectations from the camera makers in the next 18 months.
The 5D Mark IV & 6D Mark ii are heavily discussed as well as some speculation about what Nikon and Sony are up to.

It's great to see you back making videos, I always enjoy them. I think you are right about the megapixels for the 5D and I hope that canon makes a couple of 5D modes like they have done with the 5DSR and 5DMk III, I would like to see a mid 20 megapixel "every day" camera and have a high megapixel monster for studio work.

I think you're pretty spot on, and CR tends to be very accurate when it starts throwing around CR3's. 24-28mp, better DR because of the recent improvements in the ADCs on sensor. 4k with c-fast and SDXC UHS-II. About 5-7fps. Obviously better AF systems - perhaps as good as what we see in the 7D2. ISO improvements thanks to the Digic 7. Canon is a company that plays it safe. They're conservative and unless there is an obviously superior challenger in the same market as one of their products, they have no problem waiting 7 years to release a new version. That said, the 5D4 is due, and it will have to be released in the next few months to compete. Which means the designs were likely finalized a year ago, and seeing a high mp production sensor just wouldn't have been on the roadmap considering they were experimenting with a 120mp sensor that they said would not see production. At that point canon would not develop a "mid-range" high MP sensor (75mp) off the cuff without a clear challenger in the class/price range... a challenger that isn't going to exist until late fall or early next year. And they certainly wouldn't experiment on the 5 series line - which is the staple for most professionals doing studio and wedding work. The 5 and 1 series cameras are usually the recipients of proven tech that has been tested in other lines. My daydreams/utter speculations: Most of this is based on the idea of the 120mp prototype canon stuffed into an EOS body. They said they weren't going to produce it, but I think they will produce something like it if the competition starts offering 75mp cameras. I think canon would like to hold off until they can realistically produce such a sensor with BSI (1.5-2.5 years from now) - thus negating the sensor-pit size issue and allowing for less noise without having more processing power. I just don't think that Sony and Nikon are going to let Canon wait that long. Before we see a 120mp sensor, or even a 48mp aps-c sensor, we will likely see refreshes for the 16-35 2.8L, 24-70 2.8L, and the 70-200 2.8L IS to increase their resolution... and perhaps add IS to the 24-70 f2.8L because 120mp means that you're going to see shake shave MP off your images even at shutter speeds that would normally eliminate it. IS would help mitigate that and increase the quality of the images for certain subjects. I think we're going to see a new 7Dm3 early next year with a 48mp sensor. The APS-C version of what would be the 5Ds/R mark II 120mp sensor (late 2017, early 2018). This fits the pattern of what they did with the 7D2, as the 7D2's sensor has the same dot-pitch as the 5Ds/r. The reason I think they'll rush a 7dm2 update is that sales of the 7D2 weren't as high as expected, and nikon has released the D500 which beats it (due to having a year to refine their sensors). Not to mention some other manufacturers are getting close or surpassing the 5Ds/r pixel capacity. Obviously advances in the sensor tech means if you want to release a 5DS/r replacement, you'll want to prototype the same sensor density on a far less expensive body, and the size reduction of an APS-C sensor means that you get more sensors per square mm^2 of silicon plate. It would also be a place to see a Dual Digic 7+ configuration, as that's what you'd need to push 48mp at 10fps. (one second would generate 600mb of data at middling ISO) I like to think they'll provide C-Fast, but I think they'll stick with CF. They will provide SDXC UHS-II, and that's because of getting 4k out of the sensor. But I sincerely doubt they'll offer motion jpeg (which is why I think they'll stay with CF). That's just a step too far into the 1DxII's world. You'll get some highly compressed ultra-warm graded craptastic mp4. We might also see an AA delete on the 7D3, and a digic mode which does the Moire reduction in processing, but reduces framerate or a similar option in DPP. The only reason I could see a 1-2 year delay is for the evolution of some form of BSI (back side illumination), but then only so long as Canon doesn't perceive a threat of falling behind the others. Canon is notoriously conservative when it comes to its lineup. It only releases new cameras when there is sufficient competition in the market to warrant it and the action won't cannibalize its own sales. I really don't think we're going to see a 6d2 for at least another year, because the entry level FF just isn't saturated and there's no significant competition where as the 7D2 will need a refresh for canon to remain competitive in the APS-C sports/wildlife market. It also gives canon an excuse to test the pixel density for a 120mp sensor. Doing the math, 48mp on APS-C would provide the same dot-pitch density as a 120mp FF - which is why I think it would be a 48mp sensor. Also, 48mp is less than the 5DS/r resolution, so it shouldn't cannibalize any sales. The High MP and potential noise of a 48mp will steer most others clear of the 7D3 if they're not looking for the FPS and AF features. That means a 7D3 with a 48mp would provide detailed information to Canon of exactly what to expect from a volume production version of the design, and give a lot of good pointers for the eventual 5Ds/r2. Lets hope they correct the problems with the sensor/shutter assembly that plagued some of the first 7D2's. My only concern with mirrorless is the size of the battery. The reason to go mirrorless is to make a smaller and lighter body. Smaller bodies = smaller batteries. Also mirrorless = EVF/Display power draw. Depending on how well its controlled it could reduce the number of photos you can take off a charge in addition to any capacity loss due to reduced size. Simple solution is carry two bodies and multiple batteries, and swap batteries when you have a breather or swap bodies if you are concerned about missing a shot. But for most people that would be a very expensive solution, and not very practical. And then there's the people who might not be near a charger for a while. There's a realistic problem that when you're off the grid that A) you are likely trying to stay light and B) you're not going to want to carry too many spares. The battery situation can easily outweigh the reduction in body weight that mirrorless provides. Besides, there are reasons that people who need it rarely bat an eyelash at the weight and size of the 70-200 2.8L IS II... and odds are they're not going to bat an eyelash at the weight of the body that is usually on the receiving end of that hunk of glass and metal. Sometimes you need to go to the tank instead of the family car.

I don't think there is much doubt that the 5D Mark IV will be announced in August. Canon Rumors seem to have contacts within Canon. My guess would be that four years from now, there will either be a 5D Mark V or a 5DS Mark II, but, whatever it is called, it will represent a merger of the two product lines. I think the 5DS is just a prototype which has been made publicly available.

I hope they release the 5DM IV first because the only way they release the 6DM II first with updated features at such a good value for money point, is if they handicap it in some other way and that would really suck!

Hi Vincent, just one thought about a 75mpx sensor. Canon as you know gives you the option of Raw, large, medium and small. If I bought the camera with a large sensor it would be nice to have the large sensor when i needed it and shoot the small or medium raw when I didn't need the full 75 mpx. It's all about options?

I would like to see a 30-40 MP sensor as long as the ISO performance increases, and then if you wanted to shoot at a lower MP just shoot in MRaw

I felt that Tony's expectations and predictions were way off base. If a 7D Mark III comes out this year like he believes, I would be amazed...but it won't. The 5DIV is next and the 6D2 will follow next year. I think he believes the 5DSR was the 5D3 replacement, that's all I can guess...and it wasn't.

Hai Vincent i totally agree im a nikon d4 and d810 shooter nikon rumors is also saying 75mg pix on the d810 succsessor i dont need it and i dont want it 36.3 pix is more than enough for moast people, nikon and canon should instead focus on better high ISO performance d4 is king but d810 high megapix has it price in iso noise

The ideal camera would be Sony sensor with Canon glass and Nikon AF technology... I am a sony user but there is no match for canon glass. Imagine an incoming 75MP sony on a 200mm Canon IS F2/L. Adding a 2x TC III with the cropping power of 75MP, it is like having a 600mm lens...

I know a lot of people really want 4k but I dont think this is going to happen. They have a cinema line that does not have internal 4k so why would they give this feature to their still camera line?

  • @VincentMartinezPhotography

+Black Film Guild I had the same gut feelings as you about the 4k not being included, but it seems most of the rumors floating around say it will have 4k. That and I think it would be a huge mistake to not have that on a spec sheet these days. Especially knowing how long it will take Canon to do an update, Canon has to future proof this camera body with 4k. But it would not surprise me they neglect to include it.

yes, but that is why you buy a video camera for, to have 4k at 120 and Canon are famous for cutting out technology from a DSLR to sell it in their video lines or holding onto technology so they can wait 5 years and release some old technology to catch up to others.

+Josia Wiegand I'm on the fence about the A mount, I definately believe it won't be around to much longer, I'm just not sure when Sony will officially drop it. Sony says it's not going away, but they have done very little with it for a while. Like most companies, they are going to go where the money is, and that is with the E-mount system. I definitely would not invest in A mount right now.

there is no such thing as iso performance vs resolution. because only a stupid person compare iso performance at the same resolution. Compare 1dx2 vs 5dsr at 20 megapixels and 5dsr will destroy it. D5 too.
