"WHERE IS GOD WHEN IT HURTS?" By Mr. Philip Yancey

2021 BALIKATAN CONFERENCE's MAIN SPEAKER: Mr. Philip Yancey himself, delivers a dominant yet tender-hearted message about God's compassion to the hurt and suffering.
KEY POINTS: Using various Scripture passages, Yancey exhorts the congregation with the following points:
1. We live in a good world that has been spoiled by sin.
2. God is on the side of those who suffer - follow after Jesus' example.
3. The Bible emphasizes what suffering produces, not the cause. Don't look backward and ask, "Why?" Instead look forward and ask, "Now What?"

A true story about a man in the hospital he had smart people visit him and would try to explain his suffering, it made him feel worse ! He later said the person that helped him most was a uneducated truck driver, when he cried the truck driver cried when he laughed the truck driver laughed when he talked the truck driver listened. Lastly the best book on suffering is When Bad Things Happen To Good People, by Rabbi Harold Kushner!

I am just listening to this now as my son Richard is in a hospital in Atlanta due to broken tibia and fibula due to accident. I am waiting to see if this consoles me. I have several questions. I serve the Lord, and I am not satisfied with any comforts so far i have recieved. Lord Jesus help me in this tough time.

Very comforting thoughts presented in a kind and pleasant manner . I still can find no good coming from the deaths of children murdered in their school classrooms. There is no good coming from the starvation deaths of children every day. In various places around the world. A loving and all powerful god would not let these innocent children continue to suffer and perish like this.

God doesn't "let" evil happen, these things happen because there is evil in the world. If the world was all perfect, then nobody would have the choice to either be good or evil. God did not create sin, sin entered the world when Adam and Eve chose to listen to the lies of the serpent. I know this is not a perfect response to your comment. But I can assure you that God loves each and every one of those children who have suffered, and continue to suffer. He loves me, and He loves you. I pray that you can have a heart change and understand God in this way!

Something has always befuddled me about the creation story in genesis. If God created everything and it was good, as it says in scripture then what was the serpent doing there? How could that be possible in God's perfect creation BEFORE the fall?

@@philippeters9231 That is a good question that I cannot answer, but I will see if I can figure that out for you! But, I want to encourage you to not let things like this get in the way of you believing in God. There are many questions that you can ask in order to understand the Bible better, and unfortunately, there are going to be many things that are left unanswered because we will never be able to fully understand the power of God. It is certainly good to ask questions to understand and know God more. But so many people out there say, "I can't believe in God because ______ doesn't make sense." I don't know what your beliefs are, so I don't want to assume that you don't have faith in God, but based on the question you are asking, it sounds like you are curious and questioning. Have you ever seen/heard of the book and movie "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel? Look into it and watch the movie or read the book, it may help you with other questions you have.
