Where Fine Art Architecture and Street Photography Mix

Architecture photography or street photography - where is the line? Does street always have to be spontaneous and in motion?
Admittedly, hanging around with a tripod doesn't really scream "street photography" and my intention was clearly architecture photography.
Nevertheless, for me the image "Dazed & Confused" has a touch of street photography in an architectural composition (and it was still quite spontaneous, because to get this shot, I was running behind this confused cyclist with the tripod in hand).
Well, probably I'm going too far out on a limb here and probably better just call it fine art architectural photography. I've never been one for definitions in art anyway.
This tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists connects two parts of Zurich and was visually upgraded during a renovation with the floor painting by artists Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann.
I was already photographing the tunnel a few years ago - when it was much less filthy. And since I like some of the old, cleaner images much better, I took the liberty of showing them in the video.
So the difference between video and 3 photographs is not because of Photoshop (I'm not using Photoshop anyways) but because of time. Just look at the corresponding parts in the video as some kind of reconstructions.
Thanks for watching!

I've watched this video three times and each time I enjoy it more. A unique journey of composition and skill in capturing the shot. What is so fun is that we are being constantly pushed with ever more interesting shots. I'm biased though as love this stuff. This is definitely a video for someone that's lost direction and needs a hefty push or just to delight in this chap's passion for composition. Subscribed.

I learned that street photography takes just as much if not more planning than architectural photography. you will get spontaneous moments from time to time but you're kind of always setting up your scene and photo no matter what.

Although there were and are street photographers who just roam around and spontaneously shoot if they spot an interesting scene, I think you are generally right. For my next video, I tried to do "real" street photography last weekend and I did exactly what you said: I looked for a "stage" with a pleasing composition and then waited and shot burst mode, when something happened. To also record a video while doing street (alone), this "sit and watch your stage" approach is probably the only way anyways.

The slow zoom that you are doing in this video is done in post correct? I assume it's a static shot and then in the video edit you zoom in or out? I am just starting my journey into video editing so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. Video was great.

Yes, you're right. All zooming and often panning is done in post. I sacrifice overall resolution to be able to do this without great loss of quality (film in 4k and post in 1080p), because this enables lots of creative possibilities for a lone wolf filmer.

Yes, making the right decisions is often difficult. What to photograph, how to frame it, what to showcase etc. Having a vision in my mind helps me, as does following my gut feelings. Thank you :)

Hi Thomas! What brand and model is your backpack? I've been trying to find a backpack that lets me carry my tripod on top, but all I find is either lateral or center carriers, and 1 or 2 at the bottom.

Hi IBCS It's the Lowepro Flipside 400 AW. The tripod hold is actually in the center too, but on top works quite well - depending on how much space there is to maneuver. Dense forests or crowds are tricky :) It's a good and sturdy bag. I bought it in 2009 and it's still whole and serves me well. The only downside is, that the weight is not well redirected from shoulders to hip belt. Cheers
