Where Do You Find Hope? | Lamentations

What do you do when everything around you seems to be going wrong? What could you possibly hold onto? The book of Lamentations gives us a model for how to cling to God’s promises in a dark world. In this video, Prof. Wright draws together his own experiences on the Isle of Harris with Lamentations and the vocation of prayer.

And this is why I feel compelled to start every morning by stepping out my back door into my tiny garden and say my prayer of thanks, open my whole being to His love, and open my eyes to the small signs of beauty, benevolence and joy I can see around me, rain, storm, sunshine: no difference. Thank you, Bishop Tom!

Your words are like poem written within the Bible. I love that you joyfully expect the mysteries that God brings in the dark places. I love Jeremiah and Lamentations, but I cry deep groaning tears as God’s people suffer. Even so, as with Isaiah, Malachi, Habakkuk, Daniel, and others, in the midst God issues a promise. His mercies are new every morning, but even better He is with us, watching over us, loving us….in the midst. Our job? Hold on.

Faith over everything! Even as I constantly struggle to pay my rent. And I constantly struggle to provide groceries for my children! I trust you Lord! I’m choosing to keep faith. Walking with faith is the most important thing us christian’s must do. That’s why love compassion and prayers are all we truly need. Please keep me in your prayers. As Christians it’s vital to trust God no matter what we are facing. I want to give up so bad! But God won’t allow me because he is our only strength in this world. As a single mom, things are tough on me. My husband passed years ago. I feel so alone. Both of my sons are autistic and non verbal. I’m constantly struggling to provide for my boys. I’m overwhelmed and so ashamed. Father God hear my prayers. My faith in you is strong! Even though I’m constantly in fear of losing my home. I have faith a miracle is on the way! Faith over fear!

Well done, Tom. I remember in my first year as a pastor, I visited an elderly lady whose husband of 60 years had died the day before. She opened the door and said, "His mercies are new every morning." I saw the shaft of light break though her redden eyes.

This passage gives me hope. I've been caregiving full-time for my parents (now parent) for more than 2.5 years. God told me it would be hard, but I had no idea how intense and sorrowful it would be. Lamentations and Psalms have been like companions these last months; I'm beginning to understand the importance of both lamenting and praising in our walk with the Lord. Thank you for this beautiful illumination of Lamentations 3:22-24. How encouraging! Please don't stop the READING SCRIPTURE TOGETHER series. It is a huge blessing to so many of us, especially if we must be home so much of the time. Peace.

Professor nt Wright. I thoroughly enjoy your teachings on atonement, kingdom of God, and resurrection. I have been wrestling with some traditional view of scripture and always think of you as another believer who does not shrink back from pursuing knowing God and Christ truly and accurately from scripture and prayer. Here is my question to you When Christ says that we are to be born again can He be referring to believers in their glorified bodies at the resurrection? And maybe the baptism of the Holy Spirit are believers placed in Christ as a baby is “baptized” within the womb of his/her mother? There are more questions/thoughts on the matter but for the sake of not making this post longer. This is the general idea

When things are really bleak I get thrown back to God. And God alone. I walk with a family who recently suffered several suicides. Those surviving might draw hope on the “Lord’s compassions that never fail. They are new every morning” I will point that out. 🙏
