I remember seeing the saw pit near Broughton Hall while accompanying Henry T while taking Sable on a walk and on the estate. 😀

She’s right. My dad had to undertake that task during WW2 on a farm, in Surrey, England.

There were references to "top dog" and "underdog" in relation to dog fighting long before any known references to them being used in relation to sawing, none of which seem to be contemporaneous. It is more likely that sawyers took these terms from the already existing slang.

I always thought the terms "top dog" and "underdog" originated from dog fighting which went on in the 19th century. The losing dog ended up on the bottom, or under the winner, who was on top.

The expression “it’s the pits” has been said to have come from saw pits.

Because it's cheaper and requires less messing around to do it this way. There were some awful jobs thanks to medieval and pre-medieval tech!

You would have to lift a tree trunk up onto supports, it would be easier to roll it over a pit. Maybe because a five feet long saw 🪚 would work better hanging vertically too.
