Where Did I Get My CD Shelves?

Музыка

One of the questions I get asked the most is where did I get my CD shelves. So for this video I’ve decided to answer that question and break it all down while also showing off the way I display my music.

Brendon could sell these plans. People might buy these same plans over and over, maybe for years. The best side hustle is something you create once, or just a few times, to sell over and over. Or Brendon could offer a service where he will make simple plans for simple projects. He may not *need* the money, but it would add another revenue stream that might come in handy some day. Most importantly, it's providing a service to improve the life of the consumer.

Man Brendon, I've been following for so long that I moved with you from your NY apt to the New Jersey house... I watched your new music room get built from scratch and saw how those shelves were assembled.

I can some custom made shelves made. I started with Red Oak shelves 8' X 6" X I/4" I ran them from one end to the other. Then I used heavy duty 5" brackets. I screwed the brackets right on the wall then screwed the shelves on to brackets. Before I started I varnish all the boards. When I finished I use a nail get to put a Molding where the boards meet to conceal the edges.. The only draw back was that each red Oak board costs about $40 each, so that ran me some money. Like you said the boards have to be strong otherwise they bend and sag. over all it came out very cool.

It’s not just about how many CDs or any physical media you collect, it’s how you display your collection which that’s the best part, and your CD display shelves is truly a sight to behold ❤😊

Nice video Brendan. Would you ever create more bookcases to increase the cd storage? Perhaps some shelving against the balustrade? Or an island of shelving in the middle? Or maybe using another room with more shelves.

Hey Brendon, random idea, but what if you had a video series of us viewers recommending you albums that you've never heard before? And then you could do a whole review and everything. You may not be interested, it's just an idea. 🙂

Excellent CD shelves. Although I too made my own set of shelves but with a simpler design. I first considered how many CDs would fit on a shelf, then based on the quantity, I added about a 50% more for growth. I also did not have a floor space. I anchored mine to the wall just about a foot above a rear desk credenza. it measured 6 feet long with 6 selves and an open top area for DVD shaped cases. I used 1x6 8ft pine board pcs (real dimensions 3/4" x 5 - 1/2") at $4 a board. Because they are stock shape/size, there is less cutting. I also got a 1/8" x 4' x 8' sheet of hardboard (masonite) $15. I used 1" drywall screws to hold it all together (all marked and predrilled holes so as not to split and wood). In short I had a 4' x 6' set of CD shelves without any supports. Finished it was a set of boards spaced apart and fastened at each end with another pine board (a bouncy frame). The masonite is the magic at keeping it strong and rigid once all of the screws were put into place. Wouldn't the long length selves sag from all of the weight? Nope. Every drywall screw was placed through the masonite backside and into the back side of the shelf edges every 12" which eliminated of any risk of sagging. However the bigger more important part was the entire weight of the CDs and shelving needed to be held to the wall without it coming down. At each end, every other under shelf spot had a right angled bracket anchoring it to the wooden studs within the wall. After 18 years of use, then collecting dust, my collection was completely digitized. The shelves were dismantled and the CD's stored in special cases in the cellar. In your own personal shelf design, I would recommend a label maker (clear tape, white lettering) to place on the shelving edge. A-C, D-G, Comedy, Holiday, Compilation 60's, 70's, 80's, etc. Hope this was helpful to all.

Given that you have 1000’s of CDs boxed away in a cupboard do you not think you should have had the wall as a complete shelf instead of whatever it is you’ve got in the middle of it all? Also where are you putting your newest buys? Are they going straight into boxes or do you have the space in other rooms for more shelving?

You could put a horizontal lip in front of the cds to make it earthquake proof. Do you design houses? I'm actual looking to build with a barn style house with a 2M budget. Perhaps we can talk.

  • @BrendonSnyder

NY & NJ don’t really suffer from earthquakes so not an issue. Regarding my work, you’d need an architect locally to file the work with the city. So unless you’re in NY, NJ, CT or somewhere close by that my firm has a license it might not make sense to collaborate. Where are you located?

@@BrendonSnyder I haven't bought the land yet but it'll be in Warwick, NY. I want a 60X100 barn built like a house. They'll be 4 sections (living area roughly 60X30, the bedroom, kitchen, utilities area (30X60) w/rooms, the back 40X60 will be a record shop, and upstairs will house around a 75K cd collection with capacity for 100K. That will be over the shop and rooms and measure 60X70. The living area will be open with no floors overtop. I'll need shelving designed as well. However building should be sturdy and fairly cheap which would include a concrete type floor throughout the downstairs area. I'm not really into nooks, aesthetics, irregular shapes or expensive designs. I house a rough sketch and can see it in my mind. I used to work with my father in carpentry but am in no way formerly trained and there's things I don't know that one takes for granted like subtracting out closet space and stuff like that.
