I just wanted to say what a great way to explain the pronunciation of ri in riben (japan) by using the wird asia. I myself have found the r pronunciation very hard and this helped so much. Its such a brilluant way to remember and to learn a good way to pronounce correctly. My chinese teacher even uses this herself now after i told her how i remembered it.

❤It's a good way to show what literally Chinese sentences mean, so the learner can realize how to think in Chinese. 👍 😂I can only hear Ri as "(a)si(an)", but when it's Rén my hear hears clear "R" sound as in "rent".

Mandarin is more complicated than I thought. Although this lesson is specific for which country or city are you from, I want to know how to use the verb "from" in Mandarin in various situations. Because "from" is a ubiquitous and widely used verb that applies to many life situations. Like, where are you coming from? I am coming from the gym. I am coming from a friend's house. I am coming from the post office. So forth.

Also, if you are a foreigner and you know that the other person is Chinese and want to know where is he/she from (which city/province), how do you ask then? do you use the formal way or do you use the way between two Chinese people and if so, would you use nali or nar when asking "where"? :)

Slovakia=斯洛伐克(Sīluòfákè) Slovenia=斯洛文尼亚(Sīluòwénníyà) Wanting to know which shěng省/shì市 is he/she from, one can ask in formal way "nǐ lái zì nǎ yí shěng/shì de？"(你来自哪一省/市的？), which means "you are which (one) province/city of?" or in a casual way one can ask where is your hometown, "nǐ jiāxiāng shì nali/nar de？"(你家乡是哪里/哪儿的？), which means "you(r) hometown is where?"

I am from Sweden and it has been kind of tricky to translate for me. There seems to be a word related to prosperity in there but I'm not sure.

Please show Chinese characters for all explanations so we can know we have the correct word. i.e. nar = ?? what character is that-?? (你是哪人？ nǐ shì nǎ rén ?)-?? I think is - 那儿 nàr pro. there; then, that time. But not 100% sure-!! would be better to show Chinese characters... after all we trying to learn Chinese... not pinyin ;-) 谢谢你
