Michael wonders about Hasbro's Retro Collection and its lack of core characters - the droids C-3PO and R2-D2, and what collectors can do about it.

When you mentioned Disney wanting to distance themselves, it only just occured to me that Leia was made a slave on Tatooine, like her father before her (and saved by a Jedi who came to bargain)

Deep down inside people love elitism in ANY form and the ones guarding the door know this. "I have this and you don't, so I am better than you" end of story.
I applaud this man’s efforts and his quality. Amazing work.
They look better than Hasbro (both card and figure) and they're easier to get. I'm all in on the Stan Solo figures.
Stan Solo has basically been able to continue the Kenner Star Wars line. It is like he went back in time to a parallel universe where these figures were made and brought them to us. I love them, I have 5 of his custom droids and I plan to get them all. It's awesome.
But that Kylie Minogue shirt tho 😍🤩
@jime6688

I was going to mention that. Couldn’t tell who it was and my FIRST thought was Michael had a shirt made of the TaeBo partner Billy Blanks has in the new Geico commercial and I thought, “no, it CAN’T be.”
I hope the irony that without the droids the line is “soulless” is not lost on anyone.
I really like your direct and honest approach to expressing your point of view. You aren't afraid to say what most of us are actually thinking. I appreciate how informative and fact-based your videos are. You give credit where credit is due....and I love your museum-curated toy collection. Keep up the great work Michael.
What's even more frustrating is that the new Vintage Collection Mando, if I'm not mistaken, has a Vac-Metal helmet. Of course it's only available on the Amazon version, and not the regular retail release. Hasbro in a nutshell.
What's even more crazy is that fact that the VERY first characters on the first Star Wars in 1977 was the two droids 3PO and R2 and in every final end scenes you always see both the DROIDS on screen in the background in the original trilogy. And Hasbro is not doing jack on these two for there retro line WHY!?!

I think Kennedys lucas film just dislikes artooo and threepio in general given that the only notable thing they did were just used as glorified plot devices in the sequels (it's even more egregious when you consider that the reason george put them in the prequels was because he wanted to be like the "red book" from lotor in that the saga was artroo recollecting it all to the whills
@Ruylopez778

@@retro_morgan9208 I've started to assume that many things got dropped in the sequels probably down to money, rather than creative choice. I think Lucas probably gets an extra 0.25% (or whatever) of the profits if specific names are used/licensed. Hence there are so many BB8 toys, because more of the cash goes directly to Bad Robot LF and Disney. "Rey's lightsaber" being a good example.

They wanted to, but there's a relatively new exec over at Hasbro that's been in charge of the Star Wars Retro line. I think his name is Wuhan or something like that.

Early this June I got the next Star Wars Retro Collection Action Figure Set with the second half of the Kenner FIRST 12 figures include C-3PO, R2-D2, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Death Squad Commander, Jawa and Tusken Raider. Wonder if Michael will ever talk about how they chrome the droids.
Maybe the CEO of Hasbro is the same guy that used to work in the Cantina on Tatooine? "We don't serve their kind here."
Im glad i own a legacy collection chrome C3PO, he was one of my first star wars figures and hes amazing, he also comes with the Ewok throne

So true Michael. The fans do the best work👍 And as always , great video topic
I love the way you blast modern toy companies and their odd business practices. I am a modern collector and it is very frustrating that every desirable requires hoops, ladders, and other obstacles to find and acquire. It is bizarre.
Picked up R2 and 3PO carded after watching yours and Analog Toys reviews. Wow, these figures did not disappoint. Even grabbed the Luke stormtrooper carded. First class service from Chris and even replied to my message. Perfect addition to my study zone. I didn’t know there were such opposing voices to repro stuff. That’s a shame. If only there was a toy maker that had the official license that could do something. In the mean time, thanks to the fans that are doing great work and making nostalgia accessible :)
Great take on these figures. Thanks for holding the line
Im not a toy collector or even a huge Star Wars fan but I love how passionate the fans and Michael are about this stuff. Keeps me coming back.
Please do more of these. they bring peace to my weary soul.
The Stan Solo figures absolutely rule. The quality is incredible
Great video, those figures look incredible. I see more custom fan made toy purchases in my future.
Fantastic review Michael. Chris has really worked his nuts off, and done an incredible job. The absolute hilarity of a humble, hardworking, honest chap from the North-East of England, consistently embarrassing a corporation the size of Hasbro...

Amazing work done by Stan Solo i will be buying some in the future
Thank you for the content you provide in these difficult times. My family and I have been searching for C3po and R2D2 for so long. It is the childhood memories that keep us going these days. I purchased them from Stan Solo today! I cant wait to show my children. I have the originals but they are not in good quality. I had wished Hasbro would release them. Now I don’t have to worry any more. Thanks again for all that you do! For Christmas I picked up some playmobile toys for my niece and nephew the scooby doo sets. They are awesome and toys I did not have as a kid to play with as I watched my favorite episodes. Thank goodness for playmobile!!
R2 & c3po were the favourite toys of my sister and I when the first film came out. I think their somewhere in the loft, but in a 'very played' condition. The 70's toys were great, we had amazing battles with the star wars figures against the micronaughts. Those good old days when life was so simple.
I'm looking forward to seeing The Mandalorian "vintage" figures. They look fun. Probably won't see a single one on a store shelf, though.

Same. It's cool to finally have toys based on new characters I actually like. Doesn't feel like they're being pushed on me as it did with the sequel trilogy new character figures. There's some amount of demand there in this case. It's nice to have the same old faithful characters done many times in different ways, but new stuff is what keeps things fresh. New stuff you like and want anyway. Gonna be honest, and I might catch some shit for this, but at this point in time I'd rather have Mando figures than more OT droid variants.
Great video today! I will be ordering some of the Stan Solo stuff. Very nice 👍🏻
Great video about a subject I cannot wrap my head around as well. Stan Solo's figures are fantastic and I have two of his R2's in my collection as well. But thanks to this video I now understand why my Yavin R2's dome was different to the original Kenner R2...I didn't realise he had used the pop up lightsaber dome as the basis of his solid dome version...so light bulb moment...lol. And after watching this video I thought to myself that I should get another one from Stan Solo...so straight over to Etsy I went. When the fans do the best work you have to support them!
Awesome video
Michael, this was a great video featuring Kylie and Princess Leia in her slave outfit! Oh, and your observations on the Star Wars figures, were spot on. Fans are still doing the best work!
Just to try it I ordered some Double Decker candy bars from Amazon. Great video!
Glad your an anglophile Michael - I'm British and love the RetroBlasting channel & all your videos :)
@1:44 -- Heh -- Potato Head Solo! I had one of these. That guy always looked more like Ham Salad from Hardware Wars!
Thank you so much for this vlog. I've been asking the same question. Where are the droids? I'm so glad to hear that other people are wondering where are R2 and 3PO? Thanks to Stan Solo they're back but Kenner needs to release them in the retro collection. Thank you so much for bringing this up and may the force be with you.

Thanks for sharing!!!!👍👏👏👏👏‼️
Good job Michael. Love you and Melinda. And the cat. Lol.
Very good points about Hasbro.
My character in Starwars galaxies was named Kenner.
I think the one thing anti-repro people tend to forget (or deny), technicalities like legal ownership aside, is that Hasbro is not Kenner. No matter how hard they can try they'll never be Kenner. That was a company that had some great innovations that modern-day Hasbro just can't measure up to. Small companies like Smith Lord and Stan Solo just get it.
I love seeing your videos on these reissues, it's the only way I get to see them lol! I've ONLY seen the Death Star game round these parts. 🧐
It's sad, but the only way I've ever seen a fandom based business actually worry about really satisfying their fans is when they have a terrible financial year. Games Workshop came in way under expected earnings during a booming economy and shortly thereafter the old CEO was canned, and over the next five years we saw a big slate of new games, community outreach, and a radical change in atttitude. The NFL lost 10% of its viewership season-to-season and they brought back touchdown celebrations after thinking it over for all of a hot minute. Literally decades of entrenched thinking on that topic thrown out in little more than an instant by the same old men who came up with it in the first place the second they realized ratings were nose-diving right as billion dollar TV contracts were soon coming to an end. These management types don't remember their job is to satisfy customers in exchange for money until the situation becomes critical, and this will never change.

Man these are amazing! But they're so expensive! I really would like to buy some carded ones, but managing my budget for them is really hard.
Of all the criticisms one could throw at you, disingenuousness isn't one of them. You're obviously passionate about your chosen hobby and it comes through in every video you've made. Always enjoy your content.
Love it! Those are great questions on why they are not in the reteo collection. I guess they think they would not make money, but in reality, they would definitely be in demand if they gave it a chance. I guess Hasbro are scared. I'm not sure why, which was the point of this video. Great content 👍
I bought a few of Stan Solo's droids. 0-0-0 is on it's way now because I love Doctor Aphra. I did pre-order the Mandalorian figures because they looked kind of fun in that style.
Those mock ups at 7:44 are fantastic. Those are really the only other ones I want. Just those two.
I buy from Stan Solo. Love his products. I've ordered a few times and every time has been great. 5 star company. Hopefully you do a video about the early 90's Toybiz Marvel figures. That line held up real well and they look awesome 30 years later.
Asking the real questions right here lol. I’m dying to get these retro carded. The Empire wave was pretty hard to find.
7:51 "markedly different enough that anti-repro people can't get their pants in a wad" I wish I shared your optimism on the subject

Absolutely, I love his channel. Makes you realize that there are human beings behind this faceless corporate entity. In many cases these are people who have tremendous passion for their work, but budgets and other nuts and bolts issues don't allow for them to please every person while also trying to turn a profit. It's also enlightening to learn from him how little adult collectors actually matter in the overall scheme of things. That fact sheds a lot of light onto some of the decisions we don't immediately understand. He's provided more knowledge about production and distribution than I've gotten from any other single source.

Very cool. 👍👍

That C-3po is on it way for me along with a R5 and a clear domed R2
Never thought I'd hear you use the word "chuffed". This Brit approves 👍
My take away is that Mike hit the nail on the head. Alot of these big toy companies are just refreshing the same popular characters over and over. Gotta have Snake Eyes, but no telling if were getting Quick Kick or Jinx. Roll out Retro Mando but no Shadows of the Empire.
I’m def gonna buy this r2d2 and 3po because I don’t want to handle my originals and they are so beautiful
‘Chuffed’, haha from the UK Seriously though, Stan Solo’s figs are just great - that Yavin 3PO is even more beautiful in hand, I was surprised how much I loved it
Great vid as always. It would not surprise me if they released the droids as a 2 pack limited edition and charged £30/$30. At least we'd get them I suppose.
"How many versions of Darth Vader you can buy" *one week later Hasbro's Black Series reveals are Kenner versions of a Jawa, Obi Wan and Greedo*
I must say they are nice figures. I recently got a chance to see some of these figures that a friend has. Now in all honesty, I don't have a passion for anything Star Wars. I was a small child when Return of the Jedi came out. I have seen all of the movies, but I am not into it. With that confession, I really do love and appreciate the passion that fans have put into their creations. To think of the amazing results these fans have done, I am just blown away. I just can't wait for fans to do more franchises besides Star Wars and GIJOE.
Those are very cool looking.
Hey man, at $50 a pop for a loose Stan Solo figure, it ain’t totally cheap, but worth every penny, IMO. I am thrilled to be able to finally own some of the final 17 figs without paying an arm and a leg. Just got an Amanaman and Yak Face and couldn’t be happier. Amazing that someone is making these with such accuracy.

That’s how I fee about any Destro from the joe line besides the original. That vac-metal head is the only way he looks right. Silver matte paint doesn’t cut it.

The 25th anniversary Destro had a silver matte paint. A repaint comic 2-pack which was later released had a vac metal chrome head. It's all about getting us to buy them initially and then rebuying again and again and again. Just like Michael Michael mentioned in this video they keep releasing (especially the main character) figures until our wallets expire...

This has always bugged me about the Retro Collection! These were my first two action figures as a kid and are still my favorite characters of all time (especially R2!) and I collect these 2 in every line I can. I was horribly disappointed they werent in the initial Retro line, but at the time thought theyd be in the next 6 soon after to finish the “first 12” as I was naive that Hasbro would do the first 12 surely, and the vac metallizaton was probably the delay blame. Then a year and we got the Empire 6(7, ya know what I mean) and no droids! I finally got a Stan Solo shiny new lightsaber R2 in the vintage card bubble to keep with my retro figs as I just couldnt handle not having R2 represented. It’s annoying in a major way. My fear was that -if vac metalizing *is* the reason - they’d wait and release the lame-o Droids line versions which are just plastic, no chrome dome, no gold sheen. Please Hasbro, stop being cheap and stupid and release them, and do R2 in his Sensorscope version which is the best R2 and most versatile for all scenes and dioramas! Or do a combo Sensorscope/Lightsaber pop up, 3rd leg version but dont pack it with a stupid game unless you include Empire 3PO with his cargo net as a 2 pack. The game thing sucks, how about you stop that as the games are a waste of trees.
I wish the R2-G4 was glow in the dark. It looks like it should to me. That’s just me, always a sucker for glow in the dark gimmicks
This just hurts me. Because C3PO and R2D2 are my favorite characters in all of these films. We need these figures.
I'm enjoying my retro collection r2d2 and c3p0 right now, and my amazing mon mothma 😊
I’ve been sure from the beginning of the Retro line these would never come out due to the uniqueness of the molds, they couldn’t get a high enough margin to sell these. Thanks for letting me know about this other (better) source.
Something I would like to see Stan Solo do is a ESB/ROTJ acurite Boba Fett, as the original is exellent (and my favorite figure) and the mold is exellent, it is however based on the prototype armour (Hense the red and yellow gauntlets) so it would be nice to see a proper movie version by Stan
These are cool! And great point about why are the droids missing? Hasbro is doing what Disney demands. And the current demand right now is to pump out as much Baby Yoda as they possibly can. If you look at the majority of new Star Wars merchandise it’s ALL Baby Yoda. We just found a cool website (google “desert octopus”) where you can get cool retro Kenner figures as 3D models for 3D printing. The droids are there and plenty more, highly recommend everyone check it out. And yes Michael, the fans are still doing the best work. Great video as always!
I have *never* cared about a C3PO figure, and don't really care about an R2 at this late date. But I have to say, those two figures look amazing, and I'd happily display them.
I'm chuffed tou made an awesome video and yes I'm from the UK lol. No really why is c-3po and R2-D2 not in the retro collection. I'm amazed, as like you said they should be. All the very best buddy 😁
It’s honestly beautiful what stan solo is doing
I 100% agree! 3PO with removable limbs and R2 sensorscope were my first two figures, and the Retro Collection needs some version of these Droids!!
Yes! "Fans are doing the best work!"
FANS ARE DOING THE BEST WORK!
I would bet the vac metal does have something to do with it. It's been pretty well established now that vac metalizing can be something of a PITA for various reasons and considering the big toy companies have an incentive to take the path of least resistance, it makes sense that they would hold off on figures that are more logistically complicated in favor of characters they can do more easily and who will sell just as well.
I hope we see some more droids in the Jedi retro line !
Well said, Michael.
Great video Michael… im a little late… but great video
I had no idea they made a retro collection tarkin. I obviously knew about the mothma one since it came in a six pack, but not him. That's good. Honestly my only real issue with these 3rd party vintage remakes is how expensive they usually are. I've heard that the retro collection isn't as good as the competition, and from owning both a retro collection yak face as well as a reproduction I can confirm that, but man the price of like 15-20 dollars is way nicer than a slightly more faithful but 50 dollar one. My favorite example has to be the cancelled droids second line, like I do have love in my heart for characters like Kleb Zellock and Gaff for how much of a mysterious anomaly they were as a kid, but not enough love to pay 80 dollars each. Stan Solo comes close to a reasonable price, but still at cheapest they're around 30 which is still too much.

@@rayvenkman2087 Worried about what ? I've seen high end Disney collectables disintegrate in their box, high-priced action figures that end up covered in sticky goo, Tires on top dollar scale model cars turn to dust or bite into the cabinet they were display on/in. Massive discoloration, vinyl and rubber disintegrating, plastics becoming brittle, metals rusting. Some cheap jewellery and other things use a low cost rival process to vac metalizing called PVD (physical vapour deposition) which is similar but instead of aluminium being used (vac metalising) they use a sort of titanium oxide which is coloured to whatever colour you want.
