Where are all the deer?! (Complete deer population & density info by US region & state)
Ойын-сауық
Have you ever wanted to know which regions and states have the most and highest concentrations of deer to help you decide where to go deer hunting? Me too!
That’s why I did the research to bring you this video showing the deer population and density across the entire United States by region and state!
I compiled the deer population data for all fifty states and compiled them into their respective regions (the North East, South, Midwest and West), then organized the states from those with the most deer to those with the least. I also calculated the relative density of deer per square mile by dividing the number of deer in a given state by that state’s area in square miles, resulting in a deer-per-square-mile figure for each state.
The results were surprising! Shown below are the complete numbers, organized by region and state, showing areas with the most deer first. Deer density respective to the state is also shown to the right of each population number.
Sources are cited at the bottom of the description.
I hope this video was helpful, thank you for watching! - Lee Mason, Mason Leather

Driving at night in rural Mississippi feels more like there are several hundred deer per square mile.

Wanna hear something crazy? I live in Paterson NJ and I drive to work at like 4am and ive hit 2 deers in the city proper of Paterson, which is one of the most densely populated areas in America. My block is a typical urban block in New Jersey. Meaning we mostly all rent and the houses are right on top of each other with most homes being 2 or 3 family houses. I get on the highway to work 5 mins from my house and I see deer almost every day getting on the highway.

Seems like it in Alabama too.
You're absolutely right regarding the Midwest and especially Iowa, the south western Iowa is infested with white tail deer unlike the central and eastern parts of the state.

Thanks! I’ve heard Oregon is a very tough hunt, particularly the black tails on the western side of the state. I drove through there once and the terrain was beautiful but looked very thick.
Interesting info. Glad I'm in the Midwest with a decent density to hunt.

Southeast Kansas always has deer due to farmers soybean fields, alfalfa also. It was easy as a kid to sit off the pasture and plug one. Good eating.

The same thinking you used for Louisiana can apply to Indiana and other corn belt states. Half the land area is farm fields, so those 19 deer per square mile all pile into woodlots. Then fan out at night to go into ag lands, that's why its the state rising quickly in the record books. Good soils, High deer numbers and one Buck per hunter. The one Buck rule has us seeing 4.5 year old deer often.
This was a great Vid. Yea in the northwest it's definitely very tough to hunt. Plus there ALOT of predators out here and from what I read on FB the wolves are a big problem too. But they're protected. And there's no hound Hunting. So those Pumas are Literally doing whatever they want. But that's just my opinion. Personally I know I just need to try harder.

Northeast is definitely tough, where I live, I can go out to the front yard and see maybe 10-12 deer bedded down right now, but come firearm season, you won't see a deer during hunting hours. Maine is incredible as far as what's walking around up there but it's a hard hunt. I've seen more moose than deer up in Maine, but good luck getting a tag.
Alabama has 4 months of season, 2 deer a day, of which only 1 can be an antlered buck. Here in the southern part of the state we don't have a vigorous rut. I've seen maybe 15 road killed on the road I live on, 3 in front of my property 😢 I'm always watching when I drive, and have a HD deer catcher on the front of my truck.
Very cool
Lol you should make an hour long video. So many people would watch the whole thing. Plus I'm in upstate NY and I saw at least 30 deer today just on the side of the road within 10 miles

MICHIGANG! i knew we would be up there, every man i know hunts and we see deer down here in the cities! there’s deer crossing signs in residential areas lol
I live in Oregon and I can say that where live Albany it’s mostly flat and thick woods and we barely see deer because they can comfortably live anywhere but when we go east it’s mountain hunting mostly steep 500-2000ft elevation change on some hikes it’s more open and we can more easily rule out where the deer bed and feed but it can still be hard hunting
Driving in Alabama during the night is nearly impossible without nearly hitting a deer or hitting one . My first 3 deer I killed was from my Tacoma btw 😂

I live in Florida and I believe our wildlife officials don’t know for sure how many deer are here and don’t know how to manage wildlife all us hunters know how many deer there are and the vast majority of deer are does anyway that we aren’t allowed to harvest
I grew up in New Hampshire and been in Maine alot lived there and lived in MD and now in ohio there are dear everywhere ohio has tons of bucks only thing I see different isnh and maine are much harder hunting you need to cover big woods but there are dear you'll see em love the video and the info thanks bud

Ton of deer in WV.
Not from the US but very interesting - would have thought the heavy forests of the North West and North East would have dominated the deer populations.
@masonleather

There’s certainly deer in those places but the south is also heavily forested, farmed with crops they’ll eat and there’s plenty of water as well without the rough winters.
Great video. Also, technically a moose is a deer lol
My question is, is it quality over quantity or quality over quality?
I actually like your channel 🙂

Nevada has big deer elk
I was riding in my car and i saw 2 deer in Minnesota
At the golf courses i work part time
Moose is the largest deer species. So me being me I would think that your chart is incorrect. Now I know and understand that you lump most deer species together. But I found it odd that you separated both caribou and moose out.

There are definitely going to be much higher concentrations in certain areas of a given state. I wish I had the data to break it down even further.
Seems the deer don't like Yankee liberals either.
My family had a herd of 27 deer just outside of town in CT with population of 50k people. Population of deer in my area is out of control and needs management hunts just to keep the deer population in check. Only issue comes with actually getting the guns in my state 😂😂
