The balls of that pilot were incredible. Imagine spending over an hour constantly doing rolls in a plane and thinking your best chances would be to ditch in the ocean.

Not best chance for the crew - best chance of saving lives on the ground. They knew they were goners, and didn’t want to take anyone else with them. Only stellar piloting and excellent communication brought them back from the dead.

@I Am The Pope Exactly... They were also using manual controls, and had to put extreme amounts of force to keep the plane in control when it rolled uncontrollably... All that while trying a "Trail & Error" strategy by discussing it with their fellow crew members... It wasn't important to them to talk clearly with the ATC at the time but to maintain and possibly regain control of the plane... Props to the crew for working as a team in such a dangerous and unsettling condition, and not panicking... People with no actual flying related background should not say absurdities based on any heard/seen/read accounts of such cases... (P.S. : I'm a Cesna trainee pilot)

@@catitocatita3970 Thanks for saying that to Dottie. I think the pilots remained very stoic considering, and manners follow suit to maintain as much calmness as possible. Freaking out prematurely will worsen any situation.

Being a pilot myself, this is probably the most intense video that I've watched on this channel. The first thing I would've done once I landed, was seek whoever was in charge of maintenance, and punch then right in the face...I'm happy to see all survived.

Gonna be honest, i would not blame the maintence crew all that much, they were told to basically overhaul an aircraft they hadn't performed on much before, and the instruction manual wasn't that Legible either.

Plot twist, it was actually his 1928th attempt

The Portuguese Air Force deployed 2 F16’s that helped guide this flight onto the right heading. Those F16 pilots played a huge role in getting this flight on the ground safely. The crew resource management by this crew was outstanding and so was the airmanship. Fantastic work all around.. except maybe by the maintenance crew

The investigation blamed the manufacturer of the airplane for the poorly made maintenance instructions, the supervising authorities for lack of oversight over the maintenance crew, who lacked the skill to perform the heavy maintenance, and the flight crew for failing to notice the condition during pre-flight control checks, but you blame the maintenance crew.

The fact that these pilots got this plane back on the ground safely is nothing short of astonishing. Talking about keeping your wits about you and staying sane under extreme pressure! Kudos to this crew and ATC for working together in what seemed to be a hopeless situation.

Knowing of this incident already and that it would end well, I was sitting here laughing at the first ATC controller. It's common for ATC to be praised for maintaining their composure and clear communication during emergencies, but she sounded like she was arranging to pick up her dry cleaning! No stress in her voice whatsoever.

Crazy feat of airmanship. The pilot, though obviously he sounded more and more exhausted as the flight went on, remained calm and lucid even when the plane decided it was time for an air-donut.

If I remember correctly from other videos on this, the plane was doing rolls and turns, pitching up and down etc for over an hour and a half while they fought to control it. The C and FO were so exhausted by the effort needed to keep it flying that they were unable to attempt a landing and the extra pilot on board landed it. Even then, it took three attempts to get it down, and despite missing the main runway, they managed to land on a narrower parallel runway. Amazing job, and also very impressive that the aircraft held together through it all.

The aileron cables were completely reversed. It was supposed to be ferried back before, but the computer rightly said NO DISPATCH. Ultimately, the aircraft was declared a total loss and scrapped where it landed.

The pilots never gave up and obeyed the first rule of aviation - fly the plane. The two ATC were very good too and remained calm. Fantastic professionalism all round.

Some more info for yall. After 2 failed attempts to land the third one was conducted by the extra pilot in the back seat that replaced the FO. And in this landing the plane was not aligned to the runaway but by luck it aligned with the secondary runaway and the pilot decided to do it.

Nothing short of a miracle they were able to land and I'm surprised the flight crew got reprimanded for this, however it's always up to the pilot in command to deem an aircraft safe for flight. Maintenance test flights are always sketchy because at any moment something can go wrong.

Despite all mistakes and lacks, this event showed that the aicraft itself is good: it didn't break into pieces, although it was subject to heavy stress, beyond its structural limits. It made up for human mistakes.

This is a perfect example of why you should never give up flying the aircraft!!! Amazing story and great piloting!!!

literally recovering from a dive at 3000 ft is almost impossible due to the air pressure at that level. if they did that theyd be dead.

During the flight controls check, the lower center screen would have shown the ailerons moving opposite of their intended motion, but the spoilers - which are far more plentiful and take up a lot more screen space - would have moved correctly. I'm willing to bet 80% of crews would have seen the spoilers move correctly during the flight control check and missed the much smaller ailerons moving opposite. I'll be first to admit that I would have. Kudos to this crew, despite the investigators putting blame their way.

On a normal flight, probably. After heavy maintenance involving disconnecting cables? Most people would have watched every single pixel of every display to make sure things are moving properly. Taking off in IMC probably wasn't all that great decision-making either.

@@theonlyguills Sometimes I don't even know when maintenance has done work. You might get an equipment swap past departure time, and now you're in a rush not to time out because tomorrow is your day off, so you miss what you might not have. Sadly, we're all human and these accidents always have a thousand and one contributing factors. We are getting better, though, and technology keeps improving to make up for a crews lapse in judgement. A simple programming fix to push an ECAM memo when ailerons move counter to the stick probably already exists on newer aircraft.

As noted by other people in the other video,the crew was a normal flight crew(the company didn't have any policy nor pilots for such important checks after such maintenance)and the crew was a last minute replacement who weren't aware of the full scale of the maintenance. So yeah,them not seing the small aileron movement on the screen makes a lot of sense,and that was when they became g-suit-less combat test pilots for this most unusual combat manuvering jet.

Holy crap. Some (unprofessional, I don’t work in the industry) observations: 1. This plane is adorable. It’s like an A319 had a baby. 2. Even though the crew got partially blamed in the report, their airmanship was impeccable. I got a little dizzy watching some of those aggressive rolls in a sim…I cannot imagine what they were going through, physically and mentally. You can tell that through the exertion and stress, they maintained perfect decorum. 3. The plane held together during all that?! With some wrinkling and minor deformation?! It’s incredible it didn’t break up during those maneuvers. Baby plane should have gotten a medal. 🏅

Regarding your last observation: There are two well-known instances of a plane being partially ripped apart and still landing safely. Look up Japan Airlines 46E (lost an entire engine and part of the wing due to wind shear) and China Airlines 006 (asymmetric thrust and loss of orientation). Because of the FDRs from both of those incidents, we now know for sure what it takes to rip a plane apart. As for this plane, all that wrinkling and bending caused the whole plane to be written off and scrapped; it's a lot like getting a dent in your car's frame.

@@hauntedshadowslegacy2826 Um, Japan Airlines 46E crashed... due to the tail breaking off and taking the vertical stabilizer with it... it didn't land safely. It was the deadliest crash in Japanese history. Only 4 people survived.

@@Myce Not particularly...the sea won't cradle an out-of-control passenger jet any more than land will. But there are CVRs from other jet accidents where the pilots specifically ask ATC for vectors away from populated areas, or where they talk between each other inside the cockpit about avoiding people on the ground as they go down.

Holy Moly.. so lucky they had these experts on board to help troubleshoot a solution.. and the pilots immediate move to increase altitude, not decrease it as instructed. Truly awe inspiring talent of the flight crew.. so happy they are all safe! Thank you, FC.. amazing quality production!👍😎👍

This ranks up there in one of the most stressful vids on the channel. Sheesh! Amazing pilots that’s top notch professionalism and skills there.

I feel like I aged 5 years with this one. Wow... what an unbelievable flight. Truly the stuff nightmares are made of. First of all, respect to the crew for staying composed through the most harrowing flight (of the ones that landed anyway) of any I have ever seen. Second, the maintenance crew and manufacturers should be held criminally liable for this. What an unbelievable lack of account for such highly important work. Third, the pilots displayed superior airmanship getting that thing through the flight and on the ground. Not only did they have the abysmal failure of the maintenance/manufacturer, but an aircraft that is being beaten and battered more and more with every maneuver. Talk about "Nerves of Steel"! Most human beings could probably not stay sane during even an extreme bank, let alone multiple full inversions and steep dives. The pilots fought it all the way, displayed grit, resourcefulness, crew resource management, communication, and in the most difficult circumstances imaginable, saved the plane and the crew. Since it was written off, the pilots should have been allowed to "Office space" that plane. Then the people who allowed them to fly it. Great video as always!

It's really insane. like 90% of plane crashes had it easier than these guys and still brought it down.

Kudos to the pilot , you can hear the terror in his voice, yet he remained calm under horrendous stress and all the while the plane was being tossed around like a child’s toy! Outstanding heroism!!

As a pilot it is of extreme importance to understand all aircraft systems because of how complex a plane is. There is a considerable amount of information relating to these systems that airlines require their pilots to learn in training. Knowledge of control systems, very effective crew resource management, plus strong perseverance in the face of death, all played a role in their ability to survive.

I’d like to shake the hands of that Pilot and his crew. Unbelievable recovery

Well technically if they had looked at their flight control displays and noticed when turning the yoke left that the right aileron was coming up instead of the left one they’d have probably realised something was wrong and not taken off

No one would realistically expect that the commands appear to work properly, only in reverse... this was a trap, not a fault.

The accident investigation report is available from a link in the wikipage of this incident. Every edge of the wings and the elevator and the internal structure of both wings were stressed to an 'ultimate load' or 150% of 'limit load'. 'Limit load' being absolutely maximum stress in normal routine flying and in the 'ultimate load' level the airframe has to survive the stress for 3 seconds. Back half of the fuselage itself was stressed to 120%-150% of limit load so it was stressed to the 'ultimate load' level. Airframes are designed with increased safety margins but this plane went to those limits many times and for longer than 3 seconds. In practice, at any given moment the aircraft could have just disintegrated and people would have commented that "yeah, planes are not designed to take that much punishment". I really don't know what made kept that airplane together for that long but i'm glad it did...

Mentour Pilot showed the terrifying track this flight traveled. He also gives a good explanation of what exactly went wrong and how direct mode helped.

What they didn't tell us was the absolute hell these pilots suffered thru for two hours.The plane did more than flip over a couple of times.

the way that plane was moving at times is crazy ..that pilot is amazing refusing too give up..the relief in his voice when he finally got a bit of control..god bless them all

This was the most nerve wrecking TFC episode of all times in my opinion. Extremely confusing and stressful situation but still great outcome. Excellent piloting!

This should be called 'When your engineering staff half asses it due to the company culture'

@@qaisbhaisaheb412 well, i wouldn't blame them, the instruction manuals weren't that legible either, besides they were being pressured by others to finish the job.

I really felt anxious watching this, and hearing the stress in the pilot's voice. These pilots are heroes. Great video, I felt like I was onboard.

I’d not heard of this incident before. And just by learning the situation I’d thought a crash was inevitable. Incredible work those pilots did. Stayed as calm as possible and got their plane down safelyn

It was a test flight after heavy maintenance before being slated to be flown back to Almaty.

Everybody: Well I don't think going on a roller-coaster is going to be much fun after this. Did the crew get any credit for being able to land this plane? Seems it could've broken apart at any time, sure design loads can be stretched but this was extreme!

Said nobody: anything about rolling coasters. Crew: we were not killed and our imminent ditching was averted. Airframe: I was scrapped but its not the pilots fault. Ice cream machine: I may be back online next Wednesday depending on how good the maintenance crew is.

These are the pilots you want in charge of your flight. All 6 of these people are top tier, so happy to know they landed, what freaking talented people! All working together to solve the issue and not one ounce of panic into the mic, their heart rates were no doubt sky high.

Everyone in a hurry to get their own jobs "done" - absolutely amazing how the pilots kept in control 'till they were able to land! 👏🏻👏🏻 Great job TfC 👍🏻

Once again, it shows that all onboard are at the mercy of other human beings not making mistakes. I’m so glad they made it safely onto the ground and that it wasn’t full of passengers who clearly would have been traumatized.

*All onboard Survived. Finally a Happy Ending.*

So pleased they all survived! I cannot begin to imagine how shaken they all were…….just happy it was a good ending 🙏

The airplane was scrapped in the end. It shouldn't have even been able to fly. There were definitely other powers at work on this day ✝️

@@stevenmartin3920 The 'other powers' were the pilots realizing that small adjustments would not raise the ailerons but would raise the elevators. Please don't discredit the pilots' hard work and determination.

The change in their voice of exhaustion and stress is heart breaking. Someone was holding them safe till they landed. Hope they got honored for their brave feat. Not only saving themselves and the plane but no crash and ground casualties.

Now that's what we call resource management. Those pilots deserve to be recognized.

I felt the sheer terror in the pilots' voices. Nauseated just looking at what they went through. Excellent work on the video!!

ReedN - Imagine the ATC hearing "Bank Angle....Bank Angle....Bank Angle" in the background. Ok.....this sounds serious.

Every aileron roll you can hear their level of intensity go up! Bravo, went from ditching the plane to landing it!

That must've been one crazy scary ride. It is also a great testament to the skills and determination of the pilots in the face of such a situation and to the strength of the Embraer ERJ-190ER engaging in such maneuvers without breaking up in flight.

Man the crews on board did an excellent job in that condition! Staying calm in every ways possible!

Major props to the flight crew for not panicking and figuring out a way to control the plane. Also, the visuals of this video are unbelievably realistic! I noticed the hot exhaust stream from the engine is deforming the view seen through the exhaust stream. Just amazing!

Really impressed with the graphics on this to show how much difficulty the aircraft was in.

@@vripiatbuzoi9188 MSFS2020, not 2021. And I believe he mainly uses P3D because of the wide selection of aircraft, but when it's an aircraft available on FS2020, then he uses that.

That's a real plane, this rich billionaire content creator just goes out and films this stuff for us!

I was on the edge of my seat with this one. That flight crew were phenomenal. Great job, as always from you, TFC.

This was a phenomenal remake of what could've been a sad tragedy. These pilots were brave and knew how to keep their calm. This channel keeps getting better!

Having worked on an airfield , sadly the worst thing you can hear is "This plane just went through maintenance". Crews are rushed, underpaid, and a lot of the Preventative maintenance is either skipped or half done. One way to ensure it's done carefully and properly is take the servicing crew up after it's completed.

Thats actually a really good suggestion. They do something similar at Alton Towers - first thing every morning the operators have to ride the rollercoasters around to make sure all is okay!

Just like how in the US Army, the people who pack the parachutes have to make a jump every so often in a chute they packed themselves.

That sounds like a flight from hell. Glad Aircraft Firefighters were not needed this day.

Embraers must be tough aircraft. To go through those manoeuvres, exceeding airframe limits and not break up was pretty lucky. I was sweating 😓 just watching it.

I think everyone might like to know the names of the Kazakh flight crew who managed to get all five on board on the ground safely, unharmed, under extraordinary circumstances: Captain: Vyacheslav Aushev First Officer: Bauyrzhan Karasholakov Safety Officer / FO: Sergey Sokolov Source: Journal for Civil Aviation, article: "Battling a Black Swan Flight... and Winning".

Wow... It sounded as though they had given up all hope. Sheer terror. Then they hit good weather, understood the problems and sounded as you could hear the hope hit them. Great piloting... They were terrorised but they maintained their professionalism. Kept cool and worked to keep their survival. So glad they were ok

The plane was scrapped, basically unfliable! Making this outcome even more incredible.

They did an incredible job of flying and landing! Thank goodness they had the training and ability to correct the plane and land with everyone surviving!! Well done!

Wow, I was gripping the arms of my chair watching that. Great Piloting in the face of disaster. When I read the 3 different upgrade/repairs I thought "What could possibly go wrong" sarcastically.

Amazing work by ALL involved. They didn't freak out but kept level heads which made the difference. Im SURE lots of PRAYERS were offered up by the 6 pilots, techs & potential victims !

This crew was incredibly composed. Kudos to them. I’d be interested to know how they could have discovered the anomaly during preflight.

By performing a thorough post maintenance flight control check before flight. Whereby the pilot, in coordination with maintenance personnel outside the aircraft, will make control inputs that are verified correct by he maintenance personal outside the aircraft. Using intercom communications the maintenance personnel confirm that the ailerons, spoilers, elevator, stabilizer and trim are all responding correctly to the pilot’s inputs.

I was amazed by the calmness the crew have showed throughout the crazy maneuvers of the plane!! Thank you Flight Channel for the nice work

I remember watching the VASAviation video of this event with the recreation of it's flight path on the map. Watching the plane fly in circles as they repeatedly asked for directions towards the sea was heartbreaking. This crew did everything they could to keep that plane in the air, and to guide it away from people on the ground. The fact it did not crash despite multiple inversions is almost unbelievable. I had honestly forgotten the outcome of this flight. It seems so hopeless, as you listen to the CVR. Seeing them land on the runway in this video almost brought me to tears. These pilots truly are some of the best. They never gave up and they did the seemingly impossible to land that plane.

The animations on this channel are staggering! Excellent work.

@@blackbaron3330 Which explains why the two F-16's dispatched by the Portuguese Air Force to help them had no mention in this video, when in reality they helped the poor pilots a great deal.

I'm sure the response to the investigation from that flight crew was eff you! They got away from this frightening situation with their lives, and those of three others, and if the buck doesn't stop with supposed expert maintenance not knowing up from down, and left from right, then I don't know what does. I'm not a pilot, but I've learned enough to know you can't visibly inspect those flight controls when moving, and let's face it, expecting those particular controls to not be fitted backwards, will not have a box to tick on a checklist!! I'm just glad that for once, this crew and passengers survived.

"You can't visibly inspect those flight controls when moving" Actually they can, they have a panel in the center of the cockpit that they can look at, and it shows them the flight control positions. As much as they were brave and kept their composure during the flight, its still a factor that they didn't notice the fault either (as checking the Flight Controls is part of a basic checklist), albeit, not entirely their fault, but a preventable method, remember the swiss cheese model, that's why checklists and pre-flight checks are a thing, to prevent this. But complacency affects anyone, and the fact still remains that this was a maintenence issue, not that i would blame them either, they had to overhaul an aircraft with a barely legible instruction manual.

@@krashd There has been a recent runway excursion of an MD90/DC9 type aircraft, where it appears the elevator jammed in the down position, making it impossible to raise the nose at V1 speed, resulting in a very late abort, and a fiery wreck 2000 metres past the end of the runway. Miraculously all survived, but all the talk is about the tail section, and the fact those aircraft have their elevator and aileron controls in a place where you would have to use a lift to visually expect them correctly. I have also done more research since making my original comment, and I believe in just about any situation, it is the ground crew who should have fully inspected this aircraft BEFORE any flying crew boarded it anyway. So I will return to, and stand by my original comment. 1) Horrendous that no checks made after maintenance 2) Horrendous that no ground crew checks before aircraft was allowed to fly 3) Horrendous that this aircraft was allowed to fly at all given it's recent maintenance record 4) Red flags should have been raised about this aircraft given 2) and 3) already making for possible deadly consequences. Also 5) I will be surprised if some companu hadn't placed high pressure on the crew to fly this thing in the first place, so that a seemingly desperate company could get it back into service. I say desperate, because all of my points, direct me as an investigator to two companies, not one, acting in a way that endangered this crew and passengers (both of which were employees of one or the other) So given all this, it is an utter disgrace to pass all this and give the crew as a reason for this incident. In the UK we don't use the word accident in a corporate sense. It gives the impression that nobody was to blame. The third and final conclusion I would make, is that this is the final red flag in the case. Desperate companies always try to blame the crew first. Again, I direct you to Captain Sullenberger and The Miracle on the Hudson incident. If you maintain a pointed finger at this crew, who's valiant flying kept everyone alive, I put it to you that you are one of the following. a) Responsible for aircraft maintenance and lazy b) A corporate insurer c) Own a failing airline d) Work for Boeing. That one I'm simply adding for every time that company has done such things, and covered their own arses by destroying someone else's. This comment is part of a far wider research and goal. Research now 3 years in. I am shocked at the blow back I got from it. All emphasis put on a crew, that couldn't have possibly known how fucked their controls were, because they would have still seen the movement, and wouldn't have known of the inverted state of them by that, having a finger pointed at them is disgusting. I'm done here. Thank you

Wow Flight Channel you really stepped it up with the graphics and editing this episode. Amazing job! Speaking of amazing jobs - those pilots did so well to control the aircraft. You could really here the exhaustion in their voice - so glad all the crew survived.

How the pilot in the pilot remained so calm is unbelievable, the man was even preparing to ditch with the likelihood of sacrifice and maintaned outstanding composure and professionalism. Frightening doesn't begin to explain that experience. Another superb video

Maybe the best ever video on this channel - what an incredible and intense story. I’d never come across this one before and I had absolutely no idea how it was going to end - at BEST I expected one or two to survive a ditch into the ocean but, far more likely after it started rolling, I expected a colossal crash with no survivors. Incredible!!

One of the few moments where clapping on landing is absolutely justified. What an incredible job by the pilots.

I remember clapping for smooth landings in the 60s 70, 80s, Not needed anymore, as the planes land themselves.......it is impressive technology, till it goes wrong.

Another top work from you! Amazing cinematography! The part with the roll and the pilot's voice cracking while in the scary roll was daunting. Happy to hear people made it out of this one.
