    It's because the main character is often the audience-insert character. I watched a review of Twilight where they forgot Bella's name, so just called her "pants", because the reader is supposed to wear her like a pair of pants in order to put themself into the story. And that's so often true. Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, Frodo - all main characters whose supporting characters are far more interesting. But they also have more personality so you're less likely to see yourself in them.

    One show I thought did friends really well was winx. They literally addressed the main character always talking about herself. The girls would call each other’s selfishness out in really supportive but direct ways. I think it was a helpful role model for healthy friends where all the characters had flaws and strengths.

    @@ontheline3421 if I remember correctly, wasn't Bloom more the MC than the others? Sure, the friends were just barely below her, but the story was always centered just a bit more on her than her friends. She had the backstory that set her apart and like, some heritage that resulted in her powers being really special or something? Maybe royal family kinda thing? I can't remember the show that well but I remember that she was on a different level, even if it was only just a bit higher than the others. Sorta like how in MLP, Twilight Sparkle was the main character, but right alongside her was her friends, who were main characters, just not the main character. Bloom is the main character of Winx, the others are main characters, but Bloom is a bit more the main character

    @HPKuro I mean we can argue who is a bit longer on the screen. They all got backstories, private screentime, love intrests, etc eventually. Sure, we started with Bloom and she was the "cooler" and leader one but still it's called Winx not Bloom, it's about Winx. We could argue that the guys alone time was that bestie storyarch whoch was present but minor. Exactly the same as w.i.t.c.h. with one leader but all girls important or pokemon having 3 main characters Ash, Mistie and Brock not only Ash. Main character is not about that 5% more focus, it's about who the audience follow and in winx there was no issue with following e.g. that nature girl. Compared to let's Wendesday where your focus is on Wednesday and her plot, her issues, her flow of time even if you like Enid. We know Enid mosty when she is a part of Wednesday's life, blabbers about herself to Wednesday or gets a short "meet the side character" time to be more full and believable. Plus a 2 hour long movie is different than 10 episode series and is MUCH MUCH different from a hundreds of episodes series that screenwriters run out of ideas how to talk constantly about someone with limited by character and backstory options what to do without reusing their own ideas for the fifth time.

  • @HPKuro

    @HPKuro

    @@ontheline3421 the five percent more screen time is important, though, with what I was saying They're all main characters, but Bloom is *the* main character. I wasn't saying the others were side characters or something. I was saying that they're all main characters, but she's more of a main character than the rest- that five percent extra screen time is what sets her as the main, main character. And, arguining the name of the series is not a good idea... Is Zelda the main character of Legend of Zelda? The name can be an indication, but not always, so saying "it's called Winx and not Bloom" is simply an invalid argument. Another thing I can point out for that, although you won't likely know what I'm talking about (no offense meant, it's a more niche series) is the show Spider Riders. The name of the show is the name of the main group, but the main character is a member of the group, Hunter Steele, alongside his Spider companion Shadow. We see the adventures of the others, we see them do their own thing, but Hunter is very obviously the main character in the series. He's special as he's the only one in the group like him, and as he adventures on, he grows greatly stronger. The other Spider Riders grow as they go, but he stands out amongst them. I would never say the other Spider Riders weren't important, but Hunter and Shadow are the main characters, ahead of the others. Bloom is the Hunter of Winx, the others are greatly important beside her, and are main characters, but she is *the* main character. Also, bringing up Pokémon is, the worst idea you could come up with. Like... Not to be rude but, you do know that Misty and Brock aren't in the whole series, right...? As Ash goes on his journey, eventually, he leaves Brock and Misty, and the story follows him... Because Ash is the main character, alongside Pikachu. My point, in the end, is that, sometimes a series has different levels of main character. I haven't seen all of Attack on Titan, but Eren is the main character- even if Armin and Mikasa are right by his side. In Kagerou Daze, Shintaro (I might be spelling that wrong) was a bit more the main character, but all of them were main characters. In my favorite anime, Servamp, which you likely don't know, Mahiru and Kuro are the main characters but right beside them are Misono and Snow Lily. They're different levels of main character, Bloom, Mahiru/Kuro, Eren, Hunter, Shintaro, Ash/Pikachu, and many other similar characters are *the* main characters of their respective medias, but they have those friends who are right beside them, as main characters- but not *the* main characters. I'm not saying Techna isn't a main character, I'm saying she's not *the* main character. She's right by Bloom, but Bloom is front and center. She is *the* main character. Techna and the other fairies are main characters, just at a different level of main character.

    Ye! Unfortunately that's a story that is rarely ever shown. Which is part of the problem. In fact, I'd love to see a movie, well tv series might be better suited for it, but one about two equal main characters who are best friends. And it dives into their lives. Each having equally compelling and rich story lines. Unique "side" characters and individuals. Strong motivating bonds and character development. And then the two stories intertwining at times! Meeting each other's families. Helping out their hard times. Showing best friends as equal but separate. And having good self confidence, mutual respect, and healthy fulfilling individual lives. (Something i think is entirely lacking in mainstream media. Granted, disaster codependency is more fun to write lmao. But still!!) If anyone is inspired by this please act upon it!! And let me know if you do!!! 🧡

The problem I have with this character is that she's just a mouthpiece, and because everyone is just a 2d implication of a character based on tropes, nothing makes her look good. We don't get the setup for the commentary, and she points to her "best friend" when addressing tropes, which just makes her sound rude and, in some cases, a little racist. The problem is that this song was strictly written for an audience who wants to take a high-school or college style breakdown of the work and has nothing of value for people who just judge it as a story because eather you have to say she's acting out of character in this song for meta purposes or she just sounds like a bad person.

    Fun fact: the reason so many people are like "There's too many LGBTQ+ characters in movies nowadays!" is because they've NEVER been in movies, and their appearance at ALL is shocking. Yes, there's more LBGTQ+ rep. Yes, there's some pandering to audiences (because people like representation) and because it's profitable. But there's still lots of movies that don't have LGBTQ+ characters. For instance: Wish Dragon Turning Red (ONE background character is gay) Free Guy Luca Encanto Sea Beast Y'all, I can go on. There's so many movies with literally zero focus on romantic relationships at all, or purely straight ones. Not only that, but there's still TONS of white characters. Free Guy? White. Luca? White. The reason you're noticing characters that aren't white is because YOU'RE NOT USED TO THEM. Please, just give it time, and accept that people are diverse. People aren't (generally) trying to push an 'agenda'. They're trying to clarify that people are diverse and can have opinions that deviate from the norm! That's normal! anyway, subscribe to my onlyfa- (this last bit is a joke lmao)

  • @LocalMaple

    @LocalMaple

    2 ай бұрын

    Wait until Glowbuggo learns about Hays Code and all the representation it allowed via loophole, and how those practices carried on into the MPAA rating system. Characters like Goofy, The Cowardly Lion, The Queen and King of Hearts, Timone and Pumbaa, Ursula, Mulan, Lena Hyena, Scar, Pleakley… Basically, any villain or buffoon type characters or events were allowed to be LGBT coded. The issue with modern LGBT+ is twofold. 1. It targets kids, and/or has obvious representation. Parents have a right to teach, and a responsibility to protect, their child. If the parent isn’t ready for that talk and/or the talk, they have a right to not expose their kids to LGBT. 2. Writing and/or characterization suffer when LGBT is mishandled and/or heavy handed. Watch Strange World for a poster child of “message before story.” The only named White dude is the antagonist and source of generational trauma, the grandson pivots between wildlife preservationist and “lets remind the audience in gay,” and when the plot isn’t focused on either of those it espouses the virtues of green energy. Audiences want to be entertained, not preached to. I’m not saying LGBT representation can’t be done. In teen-targeted media like The Owl House, I’ve seen it done well and get a large fanbase. While in Doctor Strange MoM (a clear teen/YA horror film) America had “Love is Love” on her jacket and she said “they’re my mothers,” the character and story were well written and wouldn’t have suffered any losses if the stitching was removed and she instead said “it’s my family.” As a metaphor, in theater, there are three types of lights. Spotlights that focus on one thing while other lights dim, floodlights that illuminate everything equally, and backlights that provide mood or contrast. Most conservative people don’t want LGBT spotlighted throughout their films, few are okay with it permeated like a floodlight, and nearly everyone is okay with a backlight. There is a difference between Elsa being a metaphor for coming out of the closet and Turning Red having characters with diabetes patches, and making Baby Gonzo trans.

She doesn't say it, but there are enough clues that it at least shouldn't be a surprise that she at least is bi. Ngl it’s because you don’t have any character development to go through your mentioning all good traits not the ones that you want to fix and hate to say but nobody likes a Mary sue. You could be the main character if you had more flaws for audiences to relate to or if you faced some major challenges other than “ I am a woke feminist of color “ like maybe you aren’t happy for your friend when she’s getting her life together because maybe you were in a bad relationship and you want to learn to love yourself again bam there is your movie you stop comparing yourself to others and you realize that you’re enough and you don’t need validation from others because you want to be happy being yourself

  • @ChupacabraRex

    A good character arc for this character woud be learning and realizing that she's actually a bad friend and learning that she doesn't need to be the centerpoint of her friends life and that nobody is "bland". The problem is that characters like this never get proven wrong, with all things favoring them.

  • @ch40zch40z
    @ch40zch40zАй бұрын

    hey!!! with everyone saying this friend isnt a good one you're absolutely right..... but imagine the development. the improvement later on. this is a great idea for a character because this girl can later realize where she went wrong. i think this has a chance and its inspiring. characters are meant to grow.
