There are no clear guidelines on how to describe yourself as a mixed-race person in a world that wants people’s identities to fit neatly into boxes.
Being half one thing and half another can feel like you’re not enough of either - a confusing and unsettling place to navigate.
In His Nose, Her Eyes, Whose Face?, three mixed-race women talk about what it’s like to have a hybrid identity, while their families share their opinions - sometimes supportive, sometimes contradictory.
Allie tells her unknowing parents that her Muslim and Jewish background meant double the racism from her peers. She explains how comedy became a means of coping with the confusion surrounding her identity.
Sapphira reflects on her lack of awareness about her own mixed identity, and talks about how she will raise her young mixed son differently.
Madi shares how her pride as a black woman was shattered when she went to university, while her parents disagree on how she should define herself.
His Nose, Her Eyes, Whose Face? is a conversation about who has the power to influence how you define yourself, when determining your identity is a deeply personal journey.

I cannot identify myself as one race only, but i see myself as a product of many different types of cultures. That i am okay with.

As a native/ german/jew I also feel like I do not belong... My white friends say 1 drop of any other race makes you NOT white...being Jewish I'm also not white, but my dna says I'm 63% white...so wouldn't that make me white? I tan fast, 5 minutes in the sun is all I need...the native kids I grew up with hated me, the white kids call me jew, the Jewish kids called me friend...but I still wasn't a full jew... At 51 I still don't have a group of peers except the Hines 57 variety - we mixed races are our own peer group

I hate blood quantum. I am not 1/8th or 1/4 or even 1/2 of anything . I'm all me . Where do I belong ? Well since I am occupying this specific spot at this specific moment and it's impossible for some one else to do that at the same time . I guess right here . When I move in another moment I guess there ?? .

That mixed raced girls father is doing her a great disservice in not educating her on why she experienced what she experienced as if he's Only half Black himself then his daughter is actually White but with some Black heritage that affects how she's viewed a lot as even he himself looks close to being White if not just White.

Not a good idea. Best to only have a same race family as it prevents lots of issues.

tbh the indian girl looks 100% indian. i doubt she faced any real outward problem of being mixed.

She’s still mixed and not really Indian. To be Indian, both parents have to be Indian as that’s part of Indian family culture.

We are all one race, the Human Race. Race was created, like the census that shouldn't exist! 🤔😒😥

There's only one race, there's not such thing as interracial, or mixed races, the term different races was invited for division, ruling, and power. We may marry interculturally, or intertribally, etc. So, basically your people and where you belong would be with those who enjoy the same things you enjoy, those who make you feel at home and they may come in all colors, sizes and beliefs, etc. you have to seek that out.

This is why interracial mixing should be illegal or not encouraged at all. It causes lots of identity and social problems.
