Teen refugee & family face a hard adjustment to Canada | Sedra

Sedra, a young refugee, bears the weight of her family’s future and their new life in Canada. #CBCShortDocs

It has been 746 days since Sedra has seen her six siblings. At 17, she carries the weight of her family’s future on her shoulders.
As refugees from the war in Syria, Sedra and her ailing parents have resettled in Saint John, New Brunswick. There, she grapples with the sense of responsibility she feels for her family as they struggle to rebuild their lives. As the only family member who can speak English and the only one without life-altering health issues, she has become the reluctant head of the household and her family’s best hope for a future in Canada.
Sedra was just 11 when her father Mohamed, who was wanted by militants, quickly packed up his family and left Syria for Egypt. Within four years, however, their family was destitute and Mohamed was no longer able to secure the safety of his loved ones.
In 2016, Mohamed was given the opportunity for a new beginning - he and his PTSD-diagnosed wife, his mother with Alzheimer’s, and his now 15-year-old daughter Sedra would become refugees in Canada. With the promise that his adult children would soon follow, they made their way to Canada, hoping for a fresh start.
Two years since their arrival in Saint John, New Brunswick, the family is in severe debt. Sedra’s father is struggling to make ends meet, but his health is poor - he’s already undergone three surgeries and is unable to work. Meanwhile, his ailing mother needs full-time attention, his wife is bedridden, and his adult children have lost hope in being reunited. Sedra’s education is all that matters to him now. He wants her to have a better life, but he feels like he’s failed her.
Despite these circumstances, the love between father and daughter is stronger than ever. To Sedra, her father is her hero. He is still the one person whose opinion she values most, whose advice she seeks, and whose support she desperately needs. He tries to give her emotional support and she tries to provide him physical support as they maneuver through their challenges in their new home.
When her father is rushed to the hospital, Sedra realizes how alone she really is. With no siblings to lean on and her only support now in a life-threatening condition, it is up to Sedra to accept her role as head of the household and bear the weight of her family’s future.

I had to honour to meet Sedra during my 12th year of high school and she completely touched my heart and changed how I look at certain things. When I met her, it was for an interview for the school newspaper. We had just met, and really only connected that once, but every day for the rest of the year she would smile and say hi to me when we passed in the halls. We need more people like her. So kind and compassionate. It’s one of the things I’m going to miss most about finishing high school I wish you the best, Sedra. Never give up hope. You are doing so well and I know you will have a bright future. I hope everything works out for you and your family, and I can’t wait to see where life takes you 😊

I also have known a family who was asking for my help but just can't do much. They need US$ 6500 for UN military escort to be able to cross them to Jordan. How is this possible. I already told them that I can sponsor them in Canada. They just need to be crossed safely. The head of the family was killed already and all was left was the wife and two daughters hiding for their safety in caves. I really wanted them to be brought to Canada. Just helpless and very sorry for them not being able to help them. All i do is pray for them.

I am an immigrant too not a refugee though. I worked in a industrial bakery where 100% of workers are non-white immigrants except management, and majority of them are over 50 years old, speaking broken English. Sedra is fine as she's still young, but her parents generation, like people in my bakery, have no choice but to do manual labour in such dusty and smokey environment at minimum wage with almost no benefit. My coworker who is a refugee from Afghanistan told me there was always a long lineup for an interview in front of the Canadian office in his refugee camp. He said old couples were usually rejected because Canada doesn't need them so much. And where those lucky senior people who came with their young family members go after they have arrived in Canada? Work places like mine. Canada needs some slaves who have no choice but to support the bottom of the bottom of the society. Yes it's generous of Canada accepting a lot of refugees but please keep in mind on the other hand Canada picks young people and a certain number of seniors (50+) to let them work where Canadians never want to work. The refugee program isn't out of 100% generousity.

@@owakurucci2988 I agree with everything except "Canadians never want to work" I lived in Australia and the welfare system is much more generous in that it never runs out, you can claim centerlink payments as long as you are unemployed, however for working Canadians that have lost their job they only get Ei payments for a period of less than a year and then its on social security, which as you know is impossible to live off of which is why so many Canadians are left homeless. And many of the jobs they apply for are underpaid because they rather pay less to an immigrant, or pay cash and no income tax to the government. Many refugees are housed and supported. I have seen many immigrants defile and fraud the system in both countries. You cannot paint everyone with the same tarnished brush and say Canadians never want to work, i cannot say that all immigrants take advantage of the Canadian government while Canadian youth are homeless in the streets of Vancouver.

Can not thank you enough for connecting. I tweeted to #cbcshortdocs, emailed CBC, and posted the same inquiry on CBC website where I read and watched the video first. So far no response. Currently, I am doing research on setting up a Go Fund Me page for her. On Monday, I will reach out to some of my friends who have connections with the refugee community. As a last resort, I plan to write a letter to the High School (I caught a glimpse of it in the video) where Sedra is studying, for her to get back to me. In the mean time, on Monday, I will start to spread the word around at my company. I work for a large IT company, so hopefully will get some traction there as well. I am not a social media person, so do not have much net presence. But some of my friends are quite active on social media. So I will get them to spread the word. I need all the help I can get for this cause. It is the power and courage and caring of other common, ordinary good people who felt the pain of this family, that would make all of us succeed in helping this family. I have no clue on how to go about it, but I will not rest until the family is helped out and will do my part to the utmost of my humble self. I hope that Sedra is reading this. I want her to know that she is not alone any more. Many more shoulders are able and willing to carry the load of her responsibilities. Just as she wants to make people happy, there are thousands around the world, who would be there for her and would make her see the true and genuine happiness that every human being deserves. She may not know or believe it now, but the story of her courage and suffering will move lots of good people around her and who would become her cheerleaders. Granted that she has a rough road ahead, but she will not be braving the challenges alone now. This is my promise to her family. Julia, please stay with me in this journey and also spread the word around of what I am trying to achieve. Just emailed you as well. Regards.

Did my best to help an Iraqi Christian refugee family in India. They were here as the kids were given scholarships by our government to study Engg , but the kids were not allowed to work in India after their education. They were then trying immigration to Australia , where they had close relatives, but it was rejected. They were later trying for the US , hope they succeeded. There was also an Iranian Christian refugee in our church in India. They later left for Malaysia. Praying they're doing well too wherever they're.

I only speak Ukrainian. I am using google translator. Therefore, please excuse me if the translation is bad! I am from Western Ukraine. I am a nurse and I save lives. I live now in Germany. I need a lawyer to file, with other disabled citizens of Ukraine, a lawsuit against Norway. My husband, a Ukrainian (oil worker, human rights activist) became disabled as a result of his defense of the rights of other people (Norwegian and Russian media for 9 years). My husband fought corruption in the Russian oil giant, which was headed by the founder of the 6th Directorate of the FSB and the ex-Chancellor of Germany. My husband defended the rights of disabled people and Ukrainians in Norway against Russian-speaking citizens of this NATO country. The Norwegians took my disabled husband to Moscow AFTER: anti-war pickets of my husband in the Russian Federation, his defense of the rights of Ukrainians in Norway, the issuance of documents to my husband by the Norwegian Red Cross for his close relatives (Polish servicemen repressed by the Russians), sentencing his defender to prison (in married to a citizen of Finland for 25 years) in Belarus, who reported the crime of the Norwegians against the Ukrainians and was recognized as a Political prisoner. My husband and his lawyer warned the Norwegians about the coming war, but they did not believe him. The husband was kidnapped and the war began. And after the war began, the Norwegians do NOT admit their mistakes! Unlike the Swedes, the Norwegians DO NOT LIKE to admit their mistakes even when the Chechen refugees deported by the Norwegians were killed in the Russian Federation (Norwegian media).hfrhd

I feel bad for the girl and the family. I am also logical and believe that most of what happens to us is a consequence of our own actions. Sick grandmother, sick father, sick mother, and yet they had 7 kids on one income!!? If this is not the most irresponsible thing to do their own children, then what else is? What is the point of crying now? We can use culture, religion, and other excuses but this is a perfect example of people choosing to live in dark instead of learning from the world around them Now, why is this Canada's problem? Canada has many people living in poverty already. Why should Canada take on the expense of 3 sick individuals, a child whose childhood is ruined, and 6 more individuals who are yet to arrive? These extreme left policies are desroying countries and will eventually lead to rise of sick far right ideaologies. No wonder the world is so divided now. Instead of logic we apply extreme ideologies to solve problems.

It seems to me the father had crocodile tears #1 he claims he was a mayor in Syria with security and ( with good money obviously) #2 he left Syria but he left his peers behind.. if his peers are OK in Syria then now father and the whole family with Sedra could go back to Syria and enjoy their GOOD LIFE there as father claimed. Something is not right with the fathers story of basically torturing Sedra growing up alone in Canada away from her Syrian childhood good times but the father and mother gets the best out of their old age.

You need to learn a little more about the recent history of the area. Correlate what you find with her age. Do you suppose that the family’s security was at risk? Not a lot of “childhood good times” were had for a great many children in Syria during that time.

vl2 that’s just not the reality for most people and I still think you hold a very ignorant view of what it’s like to live in a war zone. Personally I get the decision to not stay in Syria and be likely end up bombed, shot, have your wife and daughters sold into sex slavery... or other unfortunate consequence of war. How about you guys trade places? No? You don’t want to live in a war zone.

These people could've stayed where they were before Canada. What ever country hosted them were doing more than very good in it, but I don't get why they got to still move from a country to another like Canada or the US or Europe! That is why I never liked them, they want way too much and enough is never enough for them, taking advantage of anything according to the war or using it as an excuse for the sake of the war if its like they were waiting for a war to happen.

How about you move to Syria and live in the middle of a civil war and endure the constant potential bombing of your home? No? You've stated you do not like people simply based on their Syrian origin which is the definition of being racist. So how about you shut it you stupid racist.

They came from a UN refugee camp in Egypt after fleeing Syria. Her siblings are still in the camp. Though there are people who are taking advantage, not all refugees are like that. Refugees who came here in Canada were screened and came from UN refugee camps from Lebanon, Egypt, etc.
