I have the kwaiken air so never saw the need for the CEO. I'm digging the smaller version though. Looks pretty sweet.

I've carried the CEO micro flipper for the last 2 months. It's too small to be a functional EDC. Recently got the next size up, the Compact CEO flipper, perfect.

Used to think Aus8 was a decent steel about 20 years ago. Now with better steels in the same price range it’s a 20-30$ knife steel. Have a Boker that’s very similar to the CEO with much better materials albeit twice the price. Thanks for the review Wayne!

AUS8 is a decent steal just use it and it shows you. Blade geometry will make a difference when you look at a CEO compared to a RAT 1 same steal and not same playing field.

I actually like that micro quite a bit, but I agree with everything you said. I wouldn’t buy one unless the steel is a little more premium and the make the lock easier to access

That micro might be more pouch friendly as well due to the size. 👍

I bought some CRKTs before I really understood what a huge variety of other knife brands there are but it's been nearly 2 years since I've bought one. They have so many models but it's surprising how few I find appealing. They are a brand very much like Gerber and Kershaw... they have bigger mindshare with "sportsmen" types than many other brands, and they all deliver largely whelming products - decent but rarely something that makes you say "Wow! I gotta have one of those!". I know that's painting them with a broad brush, and I would actually put Kershaw a bit higher than the other 2, but I think all 3 brands generally get a lot more attention than their products merit.

I would tend to agree with your comment generally but Kershaw have a lot of great steels at great prices and experimental blade designs with copper braise a lot of good materials like their micarta are better quality usual than the others .

Have to agree. Also agree with the other replies re. Kershaw. Kershaw have finally awoken to the fact that you can't rely on brand name and brand history alone. At some point you need to modernise - better steel, better quality, interesting designs etc. to stay relevant That's right CRKT, Gerber & Schrade I'm talking about you. Have a great day.

I'm pretty sure that Kershaw and CRKT use sanrenmu as their OEM. For a fraction of the price you can get good quality knives for stupid cheap from Sanrenmu if you're just looking for a beater. I've got a bunch of "better" knives. But I find my little sanrenmu in my pocket a lot at work because loads of people always want to borrow a knife and I don't care too much about it, but I wouldn't trust them not to chip out s90v on a concrete floor.

I feel like they gear their knives toward non-knife people. Your average person doesn't give a shit about steel performance, or handle material, just price and maybe design. Having said that, even if they bumped the price up to $60 - 70 to get some better materials would be a good choice.

I previously liked CRKT when their budget pricing matched their budget materials & build quality. They had some nice designs and occasionally I would pick one up. Then, IMHO about 5 years ago their value proposition fell off a cliff. Prices going up but still using budget materials, still budget build quality and lacklustre designs. I can just find better out there. Sharp blades all.

I have a basic non flipper CEO and it’s a great knife, smoothest action I’ve seen, no play anywhere, love the size and design… but for 45 usd it could have better materials, or just be cheaper. My guess is they know their designs look good and appealing and people is willing to pay extra for that. In the end I don’t know if I would pay 45 usd for it but it’s by far my favorite knife and must have EDC.

I have one knife from CRKT: the Overland. Mostly because I love TJ Schwarz's designs. Great color combo and I like the asymmetrical scale materials. It really spoke to me. I like a few other CRKT designs (Dextro, Caligo, Provoke, Pilar models) but most are pretty uninspiring to me. CEO is a neat design, but doesn't excite me much. CRKT is trying with stuff like the USA-made Lerch knives, but the prices are ridiculous. Conversely I have a bunch of Kershaw knives. I wasn't digging their previous year(s) sci-fi designs, but they're back on track now and I'm all about it. Yeah they could take an extra step with materials and offer more USA-made stuff, but I think they're headed in the right direction again. Competition is stiff and I'm really digging a lot of stuff by designers who use Chinese OEM's, or collaborate with Chinese knife companies, where so many are giving you 154CM and 14c for below $100. But we'll always see lower prices on those since manufacturing there is MUCH cheaper than here. It's hard to beat that price-to-value proposition.

They’re selling a lot of knives because they’re on the shelves at big box sporting goods stores. Outside of a handful of models, I think they don’t care too much about appealing to us in the knife enthusiast community. They’ve made the calculation that it’s better to have cheaper materials but invest in paying big name professional designers, so that they can appeal to the buyer who is in BassPro and just sees a knife and goes “Wow that sure looks cool!” The designer royalties is why their knives cost more than they should given the materials and build quality. And conversely it’s why they don’t usually provide better materials: they would have to price the knives so high that us nerds would still go “nah, too expensive” and the Cabelas shopper would also go “nah, too expensive.” I appreciate their ability to get newbies interested in knives, and I appreciate that they are able to put more money in the pocket of talented designers that I like. But I think I’ve pretty much grown out of buying their knives for my own EDC and work use.

Yeah CRKT and Kershaw both finally responded to people asking for upgraded steels, but they said “ok we’ll use D2”…and the problem is that by the time they decided to do that, many of us were already burnt out on D2. lol

Speaking on their whole history, CRKT is a gateway drug. It serves the market by drawing in low budget buyers with some wild designs. Then bc of lacking quality people go for something a little better for a little more money and before you know it.... From previous years some are solidly built but the ones that aren't are downright dangerous. There have been some designs I really loved (McGinnis Tuition) but they were ruined from excessive pivot lash leading to liner locks primed to fail. 20 some years to get away from plastic washers? Are they still using them? That's not lost potential, it's trying to pull too much of a margin from low end materials and metaphoric QC. The mini should be just over 40 max.

I think G10 and 14C28N is on point at $45 not $80-$90 as you suggested. The majority of materials CRKT uses on its knives are not in keeping with the pricing and some are just simply embarrassing. 1.4116 on the base CEO Compact is gas station steel and also has GRN scales at $50.

The comment about "most people would probably put this (knife) in their pocket" then you went on to criticize the pocket clip for being bulky. Well, most people who would choose to keep this knife inside of their pocket rather than having it clipped to the pocket, they would simply remove the pocket clip from the knife. Easy peasy.

These things should be $20-30 tops. I’ll take a praxis, mini or regular over these crappy produced/priced. It’s an insult on the community, way to many options than these overpriced designs that could of been way more competitive. Crkt cmon!

i would have to disagree on this, even spending 10-15 dollars more on better steel. I think the quality would also have to be improved. that would be 75 dollars, there are just so many better options now a days, civivi, bestech, kizer, qsp, cjrb. even like vosteed that uses kizer to make their knives are around that price and they are all better quality and materials. I bought a crkt for around 60 bucks and there were spaces between the handle and back-spacer. low quality materials, 8cr and frn handles and thick edge. civivi for 60 bucks much better choice, bestech too. 14c 28n and g10 and way better feeling / quality. there is actually a noticeable difference in feel of the knives.
