    If it isn't strong enough to hold fruit that is a good idea. The tree will drop any fruits it cant hold if you decide to let it flower anyway.

    What kind of mulch do you use, in past vids I remember you saying cedar??? Is that same as wood chips they sell everywhere. you can cover flowerbeds with to prevent weeds? From someone who’s just getting into avocado growing, your videoshave been so helpful and informative. Thank you!

    Cora Ruiz Avocado feeder roots are just below the surface. The mulch keeps the soil moist so they will supply the plant.

  • @caseG80

    @caseG80

    4 жыл бұрын

    Cora Ruiz like Elsinore gardener stated feeder roots are on top of the soil. So a thick mulch layer is a must never clean under avocado trees leave all the leaves that fall and adding extra mulch is a must there very easy to grow once established and cared for with few easy steps mulch layer, water and protected from sun burn. They hate low humidity and need lots of water when temps are high and humidity drops hot or cold temps. I’ve never found to have over watered my trees yet they are heavy drinkers depending on micro climate. Elsinore gardener shares great information one thing I’ve heard is to source quality trees when buying them and depending on location after noon shade either from where it’s planted or something built will really help young trees to get established as well as white washing the areas of trunk and bigger branches that are exposed to the sun during hottest parts of the day. I’ve had great luck with trees from big box stores actually but I never put any type of store bought soil in my hole of the tree nor compost doing so will most likely be a death sentence to the tree. Cheers

    Hey man good info. I just picked up 2 new trees about that size and they are flowering aswell and I started to cut back the flowers also. I dont want my baby trees to even try to grow avos yet, I want that growth. Thanks alot to your videos I've learned alot and am now using Gary's top pot mix on all my trees including citrus, stone fruit and mangos. I've been watching all Gary's classes on line. Wow, that man is a wealth of knowledge. I'm in Fallbrook, looking for Gary's acid mix, you know any nurseries around here SD or South Riverside county that sell Gary's top pot mixes. Greenthum in San Marcos only carrie's the regular blend but i have 4 blueberry bushes that need to get potted also. Thanks again

    Sounds like your on the right track Gio. Don't know any "other" nurseries down there other than Green Thumb. Gary is the man, and his info is backed up by what I like to do as well. Practice, Experimentation and Observation. Lets take a look at the trees next season and see if they will hold some fruit and what a full season growing does for the overall strength of the tree.

    Fallbrook is avocado heaven, with their micro climate. I purchased a bag of Gary's top pot, and acid mix, so I can reverse engineer the ingredients. For my pots, I use 1 part each: #12 silica sand, 3/8" pumice, and peat moss. I buy the first two ingredients from a quarry place, and the peat moss from home depot. There is a place in Fallbrook where you could do the same, buy the pumice, and large granule sand and make your own potting soil, Eastman Soils. (I have a car, so the place where I get my amendments allows me to fill up sand bags to take home, and only charge me a nominal fee.) I make my own soil, because it is a lot cheaper than bagged soil, and Laguna Hills nursery is 2 hours away from me. Nothing wrong with it, I just have the space, time, and energy to make my own soil.

    Jeesus Christ I make my own soil sometimes too. I like to add and subtract but the main ingredients are the same as the Top Pot. I do still buy bagged soil to support the people who spent the time, money and effort to get this blend back into the public’s attention and allow all of us to have a successful gardening experience.

    @@jeesushchrist man that's awesome. Thanks for the info. I started thinking the same, I need alot more planting mix and money is always tight, I have also been buying the mix because it works and also to support Garys work. On the other hand I'm always looking at ways to DIY and save some money if possible and only if it can be done right..I'll look up Eastman Soils and see what I can put together. Thanks again guys. I'll be posting some videos of my avos soon and of the new additions, 2 Gem Trees.

    On your bigger fruiting trees do you plan on doing any honey water spraying this season to attract more bees to the flowers? I’ve never done it but plan on trying it this yr especially because I have many citrus that usually flower at the same time attracting the bees away from the avocado which they already aren’t the most excited about. I do the same let small trees focus on roots not fruits! Cheers

  • @TheElsinoreGardener

    Avocados can use a pollinator or not. Most all are self fertile. The Reed is a good example. It blooms later than the other trees and with no pollinators around still produces flowers and plenty of fruit.
