The machine they tried to play "Heaven Can Wait" on, actually, destroyed its tape completely; this forced BBC One to show a backup film ("Timescape" a.k.a. "Grand Tour: Disaster in Time"), instead, and reschedule "Heaven Can Wait" for next Tuesday (27 August 1996) instead.

This was more of a PERMANENT fault, rather than a temporary one.

0:38 I used to hear that music all the time in the 90s. Break downs, showreels, montages... Felt like it was on every 5th VHS I owned

they actually did, it's just that the equipment that was going to play the tape destroyed it

The BBC1 network showed many great programmes which everyone enjoyed and they had a great choice of quality entertainment and brilliant programmes for everybody to enjoy.

I bet it must've been chaotic when they were trying to find the film reel 😅😂

I compare the situation like a duck on the water, up above, the bit you can see is the duck floating on water, but behind the scenes, under the water the duck is paddling like f•ck and getting nowhere.

@@techmailbox2400 I wonder was that noise the when the continuity announcer was on of him changing cassettes or CD's with the breakdown music. Weren't the VT machines and the film projectors in a separate room to the continuity suites. Maybe i'm wrong.

I guess there was a problem with the film, because the BBC were able to show us Timescape instead. And they probably tried different projectors to try and show the film, but nothing. Then again, Timescape was first released on video, so it could be a problem with the projectors...

I know it's been 2 years, but apparently, the machine ATE the tape and destroyed it. They had to frantically get a backup movie.

The tape they had was the only tape, but when they put said tape in, a issue caused the machine to actually swallow the tape and "eat" it!

@@ItsABeautifulDay. I think it was their (at the time) new tape machine, and they hadn’t really used it much. Nobody could really get access to the projector to get the tape out.
