When To Consult A Doctor About Headaches

Dr. Newman explains that the best time to consult a doctor for a headache is when you have other symptoms associated with it, such as a fever. Headaches may be a warning sign that other infections and such may be occurring.
Lawrence C. Newman, MD: When should you consult a doctor about your headaches? When evaluating a patient for headache in general, we look for certain warning signs or red flags in the history, and on the physical examination.
Typical red flags that would make me as a neurologist worry would include things such as the headache being associated with fever or stiffness of the neck or body pains or joint aches which would make me think that the headache is a manifestation of some other illness like an infection such as meningitis in worrisome condition.
Other indications would be if the headache were associated with some neurologic defects, numbness on one side of the body, weakness on one side of the body, difficulty with speech or understanding what is being said to the patient or difficulty in vision or eyesight.
Again, that would make me worry of a neurologic complication. The headache might be the manifestation of a stroke or were still a brain tumor. Also, how did the headaches occur? Headaches that have their onset with coughing, straining, exercise like weightlifting or sexual activity could be a worrisome indication.
It might mean that in fact the headache is a manifestation of a bleed into the brain, hemorrhagic stroke, or an aneurysm that is ruptured. Alternatively those same things causing headache could be the result of a brain tumor in the back of the head that interferes with the pathways of the cerebrospinal fluid.
Also at what age did the headache begin? Headaches that start after age 50 for the first time are worrisome. As we get older, we are more likely to have other medical conditions, brain tumors, inflammations of the arteries, a condition known as Giant-cell arteritis, which causes headaches only after the age of 50 with associated jaw pain, tenderness of the scalp, and as untreated blindness.
Brain tumors are also more likely or metastasis from other tumors to the brain are more likely after the age of 50. So the age of onset is a red flag for us. Also lastly, a change in the pattern of headaches, so even if you had a longstanding history of headaches, but the headache should coming to me with now are different than your usual headaches.
They have a different quality to the pain. They have a different location. That would make want to investigate further. And then the last reason which is not necessarily a dangerous reason, but a red flag being the headaches are interfering with your life.
You are having trouble going to work, going to school, taking care of your family, they are so frequent or so disabling that you just cannot function normally, you need to go to your physician to get appropriate treatment for these headaches.

I shouldn't have watched this video. Now I think I have a tumor or aneurysm. 😔.... UPDATE: POSTING AN UPDATE IN SEPT. 2020 I figured out what the issue/problem was. I shared my story and what supplements and changes I made to overcome. Long story short it's terrible tension and anxiety but I fixed. Took me a while, tons of doctors visits and a good supplement regimen but I am beating it! Best of luck y'all.

Just be thankful every day that you don't have the symptoms because if you have had them chronic for the last 8 years like i have then you truly will be wishing you could just blow your own brains out to be done with the pain once and for all. I am miserable every minute of every day and my pain has just got more frequent this year.

I have really bad health anxiety so can someone answer this please? So pretty much, I get a headache and start feeling tension in my head when i'm bending down. It' been going on for a while now and I forgot to tell my doctor yesterday when I had a check up. I also play the trumpet and i'll start getting head pain when I'm straining sometimes. I panic really easily even when I get minor symptoms. I hope these kinds of headaches are normal.

So what if the headache feel like a sort of movement that moves from the part back of the nasal to the back. ( I would describe it as if a snake movement) it starts light and in creases as it goes moving from the front to the back of the head it just happen on the left side.

I have had weird headaches lately. Been going on for about three months. They are usually you normal typical headache. But some weird ones happen too. Yesterday I had a headache, it hurt a lot in my right side of the head. It kinda hurt to blink, not all blinks but some. I had one today that is really odd, and not normal I know of that. (Plot twist: it is idk) My sister was watching tv then the animated characters went black and it felt dizzy. Things got staticky and then very bright then pitch black. I did NOT pass out. It lasted for a total of about.. 15 seconds? I know it’s not a migraine, they feel different. During these headaches I feel tired like if I layer down, I would fall asleep. It’s a struggle to stay standing and I usually lean forward, into my lap or on something. They usually happen while playing oboe or doing exercise. But they can happen when I am just standing there. It has happened for me during church. I have kinda told my parents about my headaches. Usually when I get one I say “My head hurts” or “I have a headache”. So it’s like the don’t know. My medical past: I DON’T get usual migraines I have never had a bad virus. I was a c section baby. (Honesty I was an annoying child to birth) I have had two infections (One ear (due to piercing) And one skin (due to over itching)) I am a pretty healthy person and usually get a fever once a year. I have no medical anxiety. But this is just weird, does anyone know what it might be? I am look for answers. Thank you.

I had a tumor behind my right eye 23 years ago. It was a neurofibroma. But the Drs said it was as dangerous as cancer because of the location and the way it was growing. My grandson has nf also and he has a couple inoperable brain tumors in the brain stem. He gets MRIs every 6 months. Right now he’s doing good. He does get headaches once in awhile. My OB didn't do anything or recommend anything. i can't decide if i should seek other treatment as i'm so close to delivery. For a whole week the headache comes at 10am and lasts 2 hours, it gets better in the afternoon and evening. Still i have to spend most of the morning time in bed and in pain. Strangely it doesn't seem to get better even when my cough is more or less controlled.

Yes I take over the counter medication for it but that doesn't even work unless I literally run hot water over a washcloth and wring it out and apply it to the problem area of my head multiple times and sometimes it takes several times for that method to even work.

I've had headaches that last 24/7 for months, on my left side, it's not sharp pain but it's ALWAYS there and it stops me from enjoying activities i should be enjoying, i'm 23 and it affects my social life very much, i'm not as positive and confident person i once was, i'm too serious and anxious, i've gotten to the point where i put on a fake smile and laugh when i'm with my friends, family even though i feel like shit. I've seen neurologist, he's done some basic neurological exams such as me walking the straight line, puting me in different positions, just some basic stuff, when i asked him to make an appoitment for CT scan he refused and said you seem to be fine, my blood tests are fine, thyroid hormones fine as well, i don't know what to do, this has affected my life so much but you can't see it from outward appereance, i feel like a shell of a person i used to be, i'm not depressed i just feel down that i'm going through this pain but i have no answers, i haven't taken any painkillers for now, i'm afraid it might damage liver and other organs.

But I have a pulsating spot in the back of my head that has happened last night and now I woke up with it. It's a random pulse of pain in the same spot. They ruled it as a concussion. As I played sports, I had more injuries to the head, even lost hearing in my left ear. I see white lights sometimes or sometimes even pink. But not all the time. I swear it’s an aneurysm, but I’m not sure what it is. I get sticking headaches in one spot or can’t even lift up my head. Can’t focus too long without my head hurting. I can go on and on. I had hemorrhaging around my brain a couple months ago and was in hospital for a few days. Almost went for surgery but, at the last second they decided not to. Instead, they chose to keep me in ICU for a while. I was released from hospital with pretty much no info about later symptoms or what happened, what to expect. Now, I always have headaches that can last up to six days and my neck hurts and is always stiff. Also, I get very tired often.

im shocked that none of these comments talk about tmj, i had headaches and dizziness for two weeks, as soon as i got a mouth splint from my dentist it went away. if you hold a lot of tension in your jaw, grind your teeth while you sleep, and or awake, you probably have tmj which is what is causing your headaches, go to a dentist and bring it up, they can help!

Many test were done to rule out allergies, chronic sinus infection, nasal polyps, Ect . Then after getting referred to neurologist where he ran test he determined it was occipital neuralgia. It comes from nerve damage . Medicine that previous drs had prescribed only made the headaches worst to the point where I almost passed out a few times . Neurologist recommended magnesium as well as other B vitamins and I saw a positive change immediately. Headaches went from daily 24/7 to one or 2 every few months

Not so long ago I had a migraine attack it was so horrible my parents were on vacation so my aunt and grandma were the only people who could help me. I was at my tennis training when it happened, it started with headache, I tried to tell my trainer but for some reason I couldn’t speak the words I wanted to I just didn’t know what words meant anymore and couldn’t bring up any of the names of the people I was with. So I was sent home wich is stupid of the trainer cus I was 15 and on a bike. So I came home safe but very nauseous. I just straight went upstairs and cried. I laid in my bed really stressed and scared then my arm and tung felt numb and I thought I was dying. So my little sister and her friend were with me and called my grandma and she came over and then I suddenly felt a bit normal again except for headache and nauseous. So then we called a doctor and he told us to just wait it out and I had to lay down on the couch and they closed the curtains en made sure it was dark and quiet around me. Then I puked for like 5 times in 1 day and the next day I felt okay but tired of the puking and stressing so I was a bit tired for 2 days. I never want to experience anything like that anymore

syeda Banu where is the headache located? Is it in one particular spot? I am 16 too and am having headaches. Mine are in the frontal sinuses and they are a pressure type pain that get worse when I bend down or cough hard. I took a Tylenol and it went away. I also have a stuffy nose and post nasal drip so I believe that it’s a sinus infection but my sinus X-Ray can back clean, so I’m confused. I still think it’s a sinus infection so I’m going to the doctors again today. We’ll see.
