I must give lots of thanks to my first ever maths teacher in Italy, she taught me how to hold properly the pencil and to always have a light touch with it when drawing or writing since day 1 (now I'm 23 btw). I used for 10 years my first wacom intuos tablet without changing the very same nib that came with the stylus, and now I have a cintiq that has the nib still good as new. (Italian text below) Grazie maestra Aida!! Se un giorno la rivedrò le regalerò un disegno per ringraziarla anche per avermi regalato l'amore per l'arte!!
The rougher the texture sheet, the quicker the nib will go. Also, sensitive pressure calibration def helps like you mentioned! I use a smooth texture sheet on my Intuos Pro, it still feels like paper but smoother!

My tip had been in use for about two years and was starting to disintegrate. Nail clippers totally worked to remove it. I wouldn't have thought of that, so thanks for the tip! (Pun unintended.)
I was searching for ways to help my pen because I thought it wore down as a result of me using it wrong. And I just found the nibs in the original box! Thank you so much. Saved me a lot of confusion and guilt haha. And probably money because I was ready to buy a new pen
I am SO GLAD I clicked on this video. I was looking to see how to remove the nib from the pen and figure out which one I needed to buy and you just showed me that my tablet has a secret pouch that I never even realized was there so thank you for being that super hero! Now I don't have to buy any!

Man literally said “don’t draw so much”
I completely forgot where I put mine nibs years ago when I first thought about drawing hobby. I would never even thought about searching inside tablet before watching this video.
I have just recently enrolled in art school, I know I will eventually have to get a drawing tablet for my animation classes. Your videos have been very informative. thanks for the great content.
Luckily I've been able to get my nibs to last a insanely long time. For one I made sure to adjust the pen settings like you said. Then I took a little time to pick the right nib for what I was doing at any given time. And lastly there are a few occasions its just as easy to use a mouse instead of breaking out the tablet.
Apparently the intuos4 tablets wear nibs down extremely fast because Wacom gave it a really rough surface. So, if you have or get that tablet, maybe try taping a sheet of smooth bristol paper to it? Don't know if that would actually help. I've had an intuos5 for like 7-8 years now, and have only had to change the nib a few times. I think learning to draw with my whole arm, as well as learning to draw with dip pens and brushes, helped teach me how to draw with a really light touch. I never come anywhere near pressing down with the maximum pressure these pens are designed to take. If you can do that, your nibs will last a long time, and you hopefully won't suffer any fatigue or pain with your wrist and fingers.

I've heard people speak well of the 4 and can confirm the Intuos 3 would let nibs last month(s). I just started using an Intuos Pro which comes with "standard' texture surface. It's smooth to the touch but has noticeable resistance when drawing. With a couple days of drawing I've already had to replace the nib once. The new Intuos just eats them up. The surface is replaceable and a smooth version exist but Wacom doesn't keep it in stock.

When I used a Bamboo splash for approximately 4 years, I only changed the nib once. I bought some plastic wire that is used for cutting grass, which is kinda like buying nibs in bulk that you cut yourself. Weirdly It NEVER wore down, ever, so I still have a literal spool of plastic grass cutting wire just chilling in my closet, for the past decade. I use a huion tablet now, waiting for the normal nib to need changing, hasn't yet. Guess I'm lucky with nibs.

Wow! I honestly thought if I was using the pen right I would never have any wear, I've felt guilty for so long! 🤣🤣 Knowing this is normal is such a huge relief, thank you!
When I had my CTH-480i noticed that it wore down so fast that I had to change it 2 days later and it scratched the surface. I fixed that by buying flex nibs which didn’t wear down as quickly and was nicer to the surface. The CTH-480 had problems with the standard nibs just wearing them down so much. I never had to change the nib with the flex nib.
Thank you ...it was a great help
A few years ago I noticed my tablet (Intuos 3) was all scratched up and made a scratching sound when I used the pen. Duh, I didn't even know I was ruining the surface. So, I didn't know how to change the nib and went to KZread. A girl had put up a video about using trimmer line as it was the perfect material and fit. I bought some and it worked! Of course, I had already sent off for some expensive replacement nibs. I just now noticed my nib is down below where I can grab it. My husband suggested I push a razor blade into the side of the nib and pull up. It worked! I use my tablet almost every day and it works great even all scratched up.
Thank you so much!
Always love your videos. This is a good one.

@TheBlackLantern34

Not sure what you mean by "completely replace" but i think the answer should be yes in most cases. A tablet takes over control of your cursor from the mouse, so it can do just about anything a mouse does, but with greater control. The only exception would be like a video game or something, but for art/architecture it should be more than fine.

I can agree with this guy. You want the nibs to wear down. I have a scratch in my old drawing tablet and I maintained it regularly. The nib should be softer than the tablet itself. @@ddzigoto nah, i didnt mean what do they do, i meant how do they work(the engeneerign behind it). for a passive pen (no batteries) to be detectable it can either be conductive or magnetic (maby there is other ways i dont know of) I dont think the pen is conductive, as you can hover it over the tablet without actually touching it, and it will detect it. I have used a Wacom Graphire 4 since 2006 for professional work. I managed to do so by using different programs to compensate for whatever the tablet lacks. I have never changed the nib. The tablet still works fine for what is capable of doing (not great for precise drawing, decent for painting). I'm looking for an upgrade because the way the tablet detects the pen never felt right, and I figured after more than ten years switching from one program to another (just to make a precise line) any tablet would do the trick, but I have seen so many complaints about the nibs wearing down too fast it honestly feels like a scam. Instead of improving their software and pen detection Wacom makes you to either buy nibs or to upgrade to a display tablet. And just in case if anyone wonders, no, I don't think buying the Graphire 4 for professional work on this day and age is a great idea, but it sure it's a sturdy piece of computer technology, considering the fact that they normally don't make any of this stuff to last for more than ten years.
