I legit burst out laughing when the first guy got shot mid sentence. It's so typical to have this drawn out hostage situation, so when Halstead just shoots the guy immediately is so satisfying. He warned the guy, and he told him twice to put the knife down. So when he didn't, and in fact threatened to kill his hostage, he signed his own death sentence. Halstead: I haven't got time for this!

there's tactical logic to it. immediacy of muscle response is dampened during speech due to diversion of cognitive resources. remember the end scene in 'Taken' where Liam Neeson's character clips the old man holding his daughter just as the guy goes into a rant.

Detective Halstead is just as fine as his brother Dr. Halstead.

Well you gotta remember that their friend was in danger, they were probably panicking so just wanted to get inside as soon as possible. Might not be realistic but you can understand why the characters acted the way that they did.
