    For people who don't know, actually it's advantageous to be a bit shorter and stouter while executing a leg/ hip throw or a double leg takedown. Both in Judo and wrestling.

    Can confirm, leads to a lower center of gravity. Also gives you a natural benefit in wrestling of your head being lower than a taller opponents with less effort.

    It doesn't help when you're both shorter and lighter. Also the number of techniques where it's advantageous to be short are eclipsed by those where it's advantageous to be tall. Most of these are due to skill discrepancy

    I completely agree. But there's still a silver lining. It forces you to focus on unconventional techniques that catch wrestlers by surprise. Within this set of techniques, some of them are still applicable against large opponents, as can be seen in this video

    Thats the price you pay when you lobby to make your national sport an Olympic sport (lol) You might run into a mammoth political entity like the USSR, which only cares about running up medal totals and can incorporate their own quasi-judo grappling styles (ie, Sambo) which favor their body types. And you have to accomodate them .. if you wanted your sport to remain on the Olympic program Fundamentally, Japanese style favors people who arent exceptionally tall and have proportionally longer trunks and great lower body flexibility. Of course .. it was crafted by a Japanese proffessor for the Japanese people

    Doubtless it's possible for a smaller one to beat a larger opponent, but you need quite a large amount of skill to bridge the gap. I'm a 65kg white belt, but I quite easily man-handled a 50kg blue belt. Judo is not magic, it's physics, and at that kind of difference, it's not easy to overcome brute strength

  • @ChalfontJudokwai

    @ChalfontJudokwai

    2 жыл бұрын

    A blue belt may be more experienced than you (and hopefully not for long) but is not an experienced person in Judo terms. 1st Dan is considered to be the point at which you have learnt the basics and now start learning Judo 'properly'. There could be many reasons. Maybe the 50Kg blue belt was intimidated by your size/strength. Maybe they didn't have the technical acumen to see how to beat you and used the wrong techniques. Maybe you just attacked to fast. It does not apply that lighter weights always beat heavier ones. Just that the laws of physics that you quote mean that with the correct application of leverage, balance, momentum etc. gravity will always have the final say. Technique beats strength a lot. Having both makes you dangerous. But often the lightest opponents have the best technique out of necessity. Training BJJ I’m stronger than majority of my partners but I can’t always just muscle out of a technique. My only experience of judo before getting into martial arts was seeing a tiny female shop assistant (black belt) flip a guy twice her size like a fish and stand on his neck after he tried to rob an opticians.

    Fantastic collection! The next time someone tells me that smaller people (in my case the accusation is usually woman) will never be able to stand up to a heavier opponent, even untrained, I will show them this video. Edit: it seems like no one in the comment section under my comment happens to be a woman. The point between the lines was not: I'll have a cool fighting match with untrained dudes to show them how dominant and powerful I am even as a woman! There is a much realer concern: having a much higher chance of being the target for sexual assault and robbery. If some creep comes up to you, they usually don't assume that YOU will do something to THEM as a female. If you are patient enough to wait for them to come close enough to actually touch you it is not hard to get them to fall somehow if you know how to fall yourself and are quick about it. An explosive reaction is so unexpected that felling a huge guy is quite possible, especially an untrained one. It should take only one throw without safety guidance to crack the guys skull on the asphalt at least. This can give you some time to take out peperspray, run, scream, choke him out etc. depending on what tools and escape ways are available. Idk, worked for me when I was 14, barely trained, and a man was stalking me home from the train station. Please note: I am European, so firearms are pretty much a non-threat. Tripping a guy more than double my weight with a surprise attack was pretty intuitive thanks to my training with men that size and him being majorly distracted by trying to grope and drag me, who was acting dazed and almost unresisting, behind a building. He was out cold the moment his skulI met the curb. I got enough time to run to the gas station nearby and call the cops and an ambulance for him. Okay rant over. It's just driving me up the wall that the actual logistics of assault aren't really taken into consideration by quite a few people and it sounds like the default idea of a fight anyone might get into is some kind of 1-on-1 Jackie Chan street fight situation. There is so much surprising shit that is more likely to happen than you think, but you can be just as surprising too foetunately.

    Women absolutely can to an UNTRAINED man. There’s a level when skill and strength meet, and in jiu jitsu especially I’ve seen smaller women wreck big men. Now I train with a world champion named Paulo Santana, and we have a solid team, but we have a purple belt woman who’s 150 pounds who I personally witnessed tap a former college football player who weighed 230 pounds multiple times in a round. Judo’s a bit tougher because kinetic energy, but absolutely possible when extremely well trained. I’m not big myself at 165 pounds, and although I powerlift (515 deadlift w/wraps) I don’t weigh much. I’m able to easily handle a room full of big men and although strength helps I’m outweighed by the majority and as a brown belt my experience has me handling people on the daily (I train 2x daily 5 days a week, once a day Saturday and Sunday). Jiu jitsu takes away kinetic energy, once your off your feet it’s all leverage, so in bjj I see women easily able to handle bigger men way more frequently than judo but at a certain level of experience women are able to handle bigger men in judo. Check my channel out, I’ve used judo (brown) and bjj (blue belt) training twice daily to change my life. Clean since April 2010, and it’s thanks to martial arts. I’m going to be adding content at my judo club with former Olympian Tarek Moneir and world bjj champ Paulo Santana this week (just started a week and a half ago, over 140 subs and growing though!).

I picked up TKD to help in this area. Of all the striking arts... I love the TKD kicks the most. Great transitions to judo/Jujitsu. Front snap kick to tomoe naga.... low side kick to osoto gari... Side kick to any seoi naga Reverse side kick to kneeling moroti seoi naga... This has been the best answer I've experienced to the short guy problem. Not in real life combat. Judo throwing someone on the concrete or hard ground can knock them out or worse. You're watching people who are equally matched in competition. A skilled Judo fighter going against someone who doesn't know the technique doesn't end up on the bottom after throwing someone. It's like comparing Karate point fighting with full contact Karate where knockouts happen.

    Tiny Japanese developed skills to beat Giants by using opponent's power and this is what the spirit of Judo is all about. Sumo is also the same. You can see the same breakthrough in various Japanese animations. Timing of these incredible overturning motion is a miracle instance which has been given by God after severe training.

    Alright, the very best I saw Was my teammate, who fought in the -61kg class against an over 96 kg in that class. ( I think these were the weights at this time, might be before more than 35 years, don't blame me for that!) The heavy weight man came to the square and he grinned, not to long. He fell on a very fast moved seoi otoshi, quite smooth but then he was beaten by the fast following juji gatame. Our team won the fight, although we did not had a heavy weight fighter. Can you imagine this situation, it happened in our home Dojo. UNBELIEVABLE, but true!

    It depends on the weight range. What is possible when 'the smaller' black belt judoka weighs 100kg against a 150kg black belt judoka, will be quite impossible when a 70kg black belt judoka fights a 100kg black belt judoka. That's why there are many categories with a ~5kg range until a certain weight, and then one category for everyone else who is above 100kg. 🤷‍♂️

    Size does not matter? in the uploaded video, both Judoka are big bodied and that is what matter as they are strong. height is not really a big factor but your body size. one who is smaller but have have big body size could be stronger plus the technic; and the smallness in height will act, against taller opponent, as stumbling block. smaller in height are not easy to tumble or to stumble, they are nearer to he ground, but the taller ones.

    Logic has shown, size matters ONLY if both individuals are close or equal in skill. If the larger guy has little to no skill and the smaller guys has elite level skill, then the size and strength difference won’t matter much. Raw strength alone will never overcome broad skill. Also this video is proof Judo has shooting takedowns.

    Most of the small winners of this video were Japanese. Part of the explanation is simply that the Japanese are over-represented amongst smaller guys. But another part could be that the Japanese spend more time fighting without weight categories and they have to get used to this kind of scenarios.

    Well ... not exactly. there are weight classes for a reason. A good big guy will beat a good smaller guy, skill being equal, usually. except if you want the big guy to crawl through a small hole that the smaller guy will have an easier time with. But that's a different performance metric, therefore, the smaller dude will have the advantage. look at john jones post below too
