    Agreed completely. The whole dynamic of Red Dwarf was the "trapped in space with people you wouldn't have chosen" thing. Once the crew came back, it was lost. I personally thought it jumped the shark at Epideme (SE07E07).

    Good summary. We’ve already recorded our Krytie TV review over on Everybody is Dead Dave, hopefully out next week (if my laptop gets back from being repaired in time) and I’m sure it won’t surprise you to learn we found it very uncomfortable to watch.

    Behind the scenes it was a nightmare too. Many originally planned episodes fell through due to lack of budget. (Which is why Back in the Red Got stretched to three parts and Pete to Two parts) And the real final episode of the series got scrapped entirely because it was too ambitious.

    By the time Pete came round it's really obvious that they are struggling for actual story ideas and just throwing things at the wall and see what sticks.

    Yeah I agree with pretty much all of this. Series 8 was one of my favourites as well when I was a juvenile fourteen year old and to be fair I do admire the idea behind such a shake up of the format but the humour and character work is so stale that it doesn’t seem worth it. They could have had their cake and eaten it to with a fugitive on the run series, that could have been really interesting. The reduction to the bus sized Blue Midget from the house sized and enhanced Starbug could have really increased the isolation feeling that the show hadn’t dealt with before. You’re 100% right with the backwards sexual politics of this series as well. Regarding the male gaze stuff I do think they could have gotten away with this kind of joke if they had framed it as the men being pathetic and disgusting for giving in to their instincts. There’s a similar joke in the Steven Moffat penned sitcom Coupling, where a character sees his girlfriends friend naked and when confronted over whether he looked his confession of him being a man and that’s what men do is treated by the episode as something perverted and disgusting, whereas Red Dwarf VIII almost expects you to relate to Lister and root for him with this kind of motivation. Steven Moffat isn’t a bad or sexist person (as far as I’m aware) but a lot of his scripts have incredibly uncomfortable writing for female characters. So if one of his sitcom episodes manages to treat women and male gaze better than another sitcom then I think there’s a serious problem. The premature cancelling of BBC era Red Dwarf is kind of a shame as apparently a ninth series was planned, but considering the way this series was written I think that 10 year break was a mercy.

    Yeah with that sort of comedy it's all about how it is framed. The fact that it's Lister, the supposed moral character of the show, engaging in such behaviours just shows an uncomfortable lack of self-awareness on the part of Naylor of what he was writing, similar to what you get with Moffat sometimes

    For me Series 8 didn't need the "Prison subplot". When I watched it on airing I thought. To many cast members here and it's taken away the premiss of the "Last Human Alive". I can only assume at the time Doug was aiming for the Movie and needed the crew to make up the story. What would have been a better storyline would have had them all put into Stasis and somehow Rimmer manages to wipe the crew out again.

  • @MidnightChimey

    I thought the scene where lister was trying to get rimmer to stop ignoring him in their bunk room was hilarious but that’s about it. That was the very first scene in series 8, btw. It peaked at the very beginning… Also I’m pretty sure rimmer didn’t actually get raped. They did emphasise the guard there before the scene and he seemed more irritated by the ordeal than scarred. It’s still a very uncomfortable scene though, and I feel it was one of the many examples of lister’s character assassination present in series 8.

  • @MidnightChimey

    @MidnightChimey

    That bunk room scene is admittedly pretty funny, but its placement also removes the stakes from the episode as far as the crew trying to escape because you already know they're not going to succeed

  • @callinater6133

    @callinater6133

    @@MidnightChimey I suppose if they placed it where it actually took place it would probably make it less funny as we’d already know why rimmer was pissed at lister. This wouldn’t be a bad thing if his reason wasn’t justified. But considering he was mad that lister almost got him raped…yeah the scene kinda feels tasteless in context. Still, in a vacuum it’s classic red dwarf. The episode should’ve really been written better as a whole and that scene gets indirectly a bit soured as a result.

    Red Dwarf Series 8. A series so bad that the BBC finally decided to kill the show. You see this is the sort of series you write when you are clearly suffering from Writers Block. Also by the way the deleted first ending is now the actual ending. (The One where they save the ship and regain control of the ship) Doug Naylor had thought of replacing the ending of Only the Good during production of the Series 8 DVD.
