@@shoelacedonkey The question posed didnt make sense. What is equal pay based on? Sportspeople are entertainers, just like musicians. Its hardly equal pay in the music industry, its about the number of bums on seats. I dont expect everyone to be paid the same, not every entertainment product is of equal entertainment value. I expect Beyonce to be paid more than most men in the industry. This is not the same as going to work for a bank where there are equal job structures to ensure equal work is done driving the same output. Ultimately it can argued that women are paid better in Grand Slam tennis than men on an hourly rate seeing that men often play best of 5 sets & women best of 3. A womens final drives far less TV advertising revenue being a best of 3 sets than the men. So what exactly is equal pay based on?

you're looking at it the wrong way. There are tonnes of reporters that don't make sensationalist titles, and guess who reads them? Not many people. If tomorrow, this news outlet starts being honest, it will fall in rating, and another dishonest one will rise to the top. They do this because there's a demand for it. When was the last time you took your time to find a good reporter and went out of your way to promote or reward them? You start by: 1) having discipline to not fall for click bait; 2) taking your time to actively look for good journalism, not just passively wait for whatever comes; 3) rewarding good journalism with more than just clicks or views. If people do this, we will see less click bait and more content. But people would never see fault in themselves, they rather blame it on the media, who operates on the same law Rafael Nadal has stated - they are rewarded for what they were able to sell / generate.

But the point that stood out for me the most (from which he skillfully pivoted) is that he only mentioned one profession (modeling), one where mainly outward appearances are paramount, as example of where women can typically make more. this does not show some balanced equation from which this reporter is only highlighting one side. subsequently if he attempted to create a comparative list (which the remained of his answer appeared to me to suggest would contain a somewhat equal ratio of professions) then the rest of his answer may have been quite different, and less relevant. @@bikerrecumbent1064

Absolutely! I don't think that women should be paid less for doing the same work as men, but in the tennis example given, most ladies' matches are shorter than men's matches. Ladies play a maximum of 3 sets in a Grand Slam match, whereas men play a minimum of 3 sets. Also, if you were to carry out a survey on the street and ask 'who is the current Wimbledon (or French, US or Australian) champion, then most responses will be a man's name. Women just don't attract the same size audience. Rafa's example about modelling is a good one. Many women will buy clothes depending on who's modelled them, whereas men don't really care. A high profile female model could earn an organisation far more than a male model, so should be paid more accordingly. Female footballers earn less than men, but if their wages were the same, would as many people pay to watch them? Probably not. I personally think that male footballers are grossly overpaid, but if people pay to watch them play, then the demand is there. If their clubs try to pay them less then they'll move to another club. That's how business works.

I think "deserve" is the entirely wrong word here. You might "deserve" the same amount of pay for doing similar work. But if nobody wants to see you, thats irrelevant. If the customers decide what they want to see, they won't always honor those who did the best work. Thats just the way it is. You should of course always try to get rid of hurdles that prevent people from having success. But even if there are none left, not everyone will get what they "deserve".

You really didn't understand what he meant. Hypocrisy would be to act as an ambassador for something that nobody has to change except the market itself, its sales and its profits. If a female or male sport does not generate profits or generates less than the other gender, then it is unfair to charge more or less for being a man or a woman. They have to earn what they generate, no more and no less. That is what he says. If the WNBA was watched on the same level as the NBA, and its merchandising sold the same, then, and only then, should women earn the same as men. In the meantime, they don't. That WOULD be unfair. And that's just what happens with modelling, women earn more because they generate more profit and sell more products. Period. It doesn't take ambassadors or anything like that to artificially maintain a business in a way that has more costs than revenues. It is absurd.

yea it's same for movie actors, singers, comedians etc. It all boils down to how many tickets they sell. A lot of people show up in movie theater because Tom Cruise is in the movie and he gets paid accordingly. Same with Taylor Swift, Bill Burr, Mike Tyson and Lionel Messi, nothing to do with gender. If more people were interested in women football and they could sell out the whole stadium ,they would make more money too.
