When they say that they really mean "they think you ARE better than them" it's a way for them to try and guilt trip you for bettering yourself. Some people just don't want to be left behind. You see this same example everywhere. Like when someone decides to gain muscle there's always someone who will say "oh they're using steroids" or someone who gets beat in a game/competition you'll they will resort to "you're cheating"! It's just the constant Downplaying. They know you're doing the damn thing. It's an attempt to throw you off so you can go down to their level and when you're on their level they won't see you as someone who is better than them. Not a threat to their ego.

What's funny is I got called toxic for doing exactly that. I had removed a person from my friend group cause they wanted to keep the worst type of people in their life, I mean all the serious red flags. Their mom died and I was trying to be there for them cause I experienced the same passing earlier than same year. I told them I don't want to talk about these people, while I was cooking them dinner. They kept crossing my boundaries bringing them up so I said what was on my mind about these individuals, and got called toxic for not wanting them and their crazy ex in my life.

Trauma. Negative parents. Didn't learn affection of positive emotion. Only double sized range of negative emotion. And they know dirty was donw to them so they hate happy/positive people, because they aren't taught how to be that and they're jealous. So instead of admitting this and asking "hey man how to be as cool as you are?" they do the only thing they know....

Facts. Once it starts… there ain’t no stopping it. I hurt myself more trying to reconcile and heal relationships/groups with people who just wanted my spot. I’m just putting all the energy back into myself now… that’s what makes them mad. If you’re working in yourself/your projects, you don’t really have time for ‘em anyways.

Why do people talk badly behind your back when you're in a depressive non-productive period, though? I've experienced that so much, relatives and friends grinning in my face and acting supportive, only for me to find out they're all maliciously gossiping and complaining about me or laughing at me in private. What is that about? Where does it come from? Because it can't be jealousy.

Mmm… but don’t sit there and allow them to drain your energy.. dead weight cut them off. Logically speaking most humans never PICK THEIR FRIENDS. You’re friends with people because you were forced. Either school or a job and you made friends with them there. That is the importance of travel, hobbies and money. Because you get to go out of your way and pick people who are like you and match with you better than anyone you were forced to meet and you had commonalities that pushed friendship THROUGH CIRCUMSTANCE. Circumstance like not being a loner, weird, having friends etc. this doesn’t mean they aren’t your friends etc but they aren’t chosen.

I can certainly relate to this , as soon as i started to level up in life ppl from my past started talking shyt on me outta nowhere, i was like damn i thought we was tight . Where tf did this come from?

If they acted sour and talked bad about you on top of it for you succeeding, they weren't your friends. If someone repeats information that you said you wanted just between you to your ( ex friends ?) or anyone, that's invading your privacy. I've had bad experiences with abusive people and one of the first signs was over complimenting or over helpful and then making little critiques all the time or acting sour when I'm talking about my goals or achievements. If a person acts like that and you get a sick feeling, get away from them and don't look back. That person is an abuser , maybe even has a cluster b personality disorder and if that's the case, they'll do everything to destroy you and everything you worked for and hold dear and blame you for it and act like you're disordered and crazy. Avoid people that want to one up you too because that's another sign of a controlling abuser. That behavior isn't funny. It's about control. Good for you and don't feel bad for wanting to better yourself and be around healthier people. Thank you for sharing.

If people hate you without cause, it's because they hate themselves first and are projecting onto you. Sometimes people don't make the grade that qualifies them to be human. When that is seen, it's best to cut your losses and move on.

When you do well or better than your friends, they get jealous and start hating on you. I’ve had that happen many times. But when my friends do well, I’m really happy for them or I want to be doing just as well and I look at as positive influences. Only a few can avoid being jealous and secured with themselves. Lots of fake haters out there and I had to learn this the hard way.

Hey, needed this. Been going through this after I started a new job I’ve been working towards since I graduated. Just into our 30s now and majority of them friends didn’t do similar or flunked out first year by not trying. If you’re reading this, prioritize yourself and don’t be like me. I was empathetic for too long and for 10 years I allowed myself to downplay my success. I let myself believe I was being a good friend by not talking about what I had going on. Not being my full potential or being happy for my successes because I thought I didn’t want to embarrass them infront of their family or other with my own family if I was asked how I was doing. Because sooner or later, those people were the only ones asking how I was doing and these ‘friends,’ only seemed interested if I wasn’t doing okay. Again, cut it off sooner if you’re going though something similar and you’re only so many months or a few years into it. It’s not worth it. You’re growing and you can’t make yourself stagnant for them.

Well I was doing the opposite going downhill w/severe depression. But, I never told my friends. 1 friend would answer my text a day or 2 after. I asked them to let me know at least a day before when they want to hangout but, they kept asking the day of. So I ghosted them.

Success over there means a job well done or a long and happy marriage. Here in the US it means you have the latest iPhone and the biggest house on the street and you're a showoff. It's soul crushing and sad how someone could have just received their bs in sociology from Harvard and chose to join the peace corps and help others in foreign countries instead of joining the rat race in America and that person wouldn't be viewed as "successful". The hard earned degree means nothing in comparison with a new Lexus. How sad.

For example a rich person could be jealous of a broke person because the broke person has more charisma or is more comfortable in their own skin or to them has a better sounding voice. Maybe when the jealousy occur in the other person, as a friend, you should be there to give them a sense of security in hopes of them to gain a key towards success. I used to be so excited to see my best friend I’d come in the door dancin and doodlydooing..just happy to be away from home and the kids and hubby just to chit chat and have some we time and I get told somethin is wrong with me I’m taking a bunch of pills and such and what does she need a friend like me for (I’d pop by randomly and tidy up the house after they left to have fun with grandkids so she wouldn’t have to come home to the disaster that was made just trying to leave somewhere with 3 grandkids.)
