This comment is 100% accurate, as a infantry veteran, the amount of 2lts, 1lts, and even captains that came to our unit without a single clue on what to do is amazing. In my quick 4 years my platoon and I had to teach 3 different Lts how to do their job. Only 1 was an ass about it though

I suddenly remembered the 3 star general on my Summer Cadre Training. (Philippine Airforce.) We were college Students who under Go military Training for 45 days inside the Military base. There's 5 of us, While we were going back on our barracks because we were done cooking, we saw the 3 star General heading our Way so we quickly line up for formation to salute him. When He saw us saluting him, He Put down the Things In his Hands (Laptop,Few folders and his Phone.) and Salute us Back. Because of that I have huge respect and admiration to him. .

There's a great anecdotal story about how an LT in the marines was laying into an enlisted guy for not saluting him, as was his due. He made the marine stand there and salute him 100 times. During that, Chesty comes by and asks what's going on. The smug LT explains the situation, and Chesty agrees with the LT. After a pause he says "that marine is saluting you, but you are not returning his salute as required." He then made the marine start again from zero, and stood and watched the LT returned each and every salute. Apparently the enlisted marine had a bad case of shit-eating grin for all 100 salutes.

Never met an officer who saluted back that was an asshole. I remember this story told to me by a friend. My friend comes from a unit where the leadership engendered a culture of "You don't have to salute if you're in the middle of important work. Service comes first, decorum comes after." And one day, he's working on something deeply important and an officer from another unit comes in and he expects some salute and gets pissy when he doesn't receive one. My friend, of course, explains that in their unit, salutes are performed when appropriate by those able. Those who are engrossed in very important work are not able to salute and cannot be expected to. This goes up to the unit's commanding officer who goes "Yeah, my guys don't owe you shit, take the chip off your shoulder and go somewhere else." Don't be the officer who isn't good to subordinates. Nobody fucking likes you when you're an asshole.

So the unit doesn’t expect a salute when engrossed in work, but the other officer wouldn’t have known that, and the officer telling him that should understand that. So to tell him to stop being pissy is kind of silly in my opinion. Saluting is supposed to be done for a reason and it’s to show respect. I’d rather serve an officer that holds tradition and respect above the fire of the day, especially because saluting doesn’t hinder your ability to do work in any way. Just my opinion, however.

Being an officer I learned that saluting is a two way street. Being a brand new 2ndLt, I don’t expect a salute every time but I love saluting back. It’s a mutual exchange of respect regardless of rank. I think it’s one of the coolest customs and courtesies the military has that just doesn’t exist is the civilian world.

"Being a brand new 2ndLt, I don’t expect a salute every time" Why not? You absolutely should expect it; it's decorum. When I was a Cpl (Marine), I was once the subject of an ass chewing from a Sgt 1st Class for not saluting the Lt he was walking with. He also threw in there that Marines are not "better than Soldiers" and that all enlisted salute all officers. I agreed with him. He asked for my explanation for not saluting and my answer was simple. I told him that being that we were currently in Afghanistan, a combat zone, that I would not be saluting the Lt. In addition, I was not wearing a cover that, according to the MCO 1020.34g (at the time), Marines render a salute in. He asked for my CO, I gave him the Col's name and went along my way. The Col found me later and congratulated me on keeping my cool and remaining professional.

    Жыл бұрын

@Jon Doe Yeah, no worries. I'll run through it all. It'll help with the context. I'm in the Marine Corps and this altercation happened between my self and a Soldier (Army). Cpl is the abbreviation for Corporal and Sgt 1st Class is a Sergeant First Class. Im sure that's not the correct abbreviation, but I dont care. I was an E4 and the Sgt 1st Class is an E7, that's the difference in rank between us. Also, there is no Sgt 1st Class in the Marine Corps. Instead E7 for us is Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt). They are NOT the same! Anyway, Lt is Lieutenant and Col is Colonel. CO is Commanding Officer. MCO is Marine Corps Order and MCO 1020.34g was the Uniform Order for the Marine Corps at the time. This is the doctrine that tells Marines what is and is not authorized for wear and how to wear it. A cover is a hat. Rendering a salute is quite literally the action of saluting. When an enlisted service member renders a salute to an officer, that officer is REQUIRED to return the salute. Hope this helped clear things up fella.

I've also had several officers drop their PX bags or whatever they were holding just to return the salute. Most would either smile or chuckle, especially the female officers, (mainly cause I usually had a goofy, shit-eating grin on my face) or they would just ignore me. @S3Rg3 You are correct, protocol does not require them to return a salute. However, most young officers don't know that, mainly due to the Army "encouraging" returning salutes whenever possible. They literally teach "always keep your right hand free, if possible. I.e. PX bags are to be held in the left hand unless you have so many that it requires both hands to hold them all." Still funny to watch the young ones squirm.

I hated working gates because you'd always have officers in civilian clothes or retired officers drive up with their beard and a pony tail and demand a salute. I even told my flight chief per the UCMJ you have to salute all officers in uniform, why are we constantly saluting civilians not in uniform that haven't even been in the military in over twenty years. He didn't have an answer for me.

Worked a specific gate for helicopters at Bragg. Morning shift crews always come in late and rushing to get their chow hall, PT, or for duty. Almost all have coffee, usually in their right hands while driving so they can dim their headlights for the gate. Every day we had at least one driver salute and forget about their coffee as they pour it on themselves. We considered it bonus points if they were in dress uniform and not BDU's.

When I explained I was too busy dodging their bumper to salute, confirmed by a couple fellow Marines I was on a work party with, my SSgt had a ‘nice’ talk with the LT who never said a word or looked in our direction as they left rather quickly directly afterwards. 🤣

As a retired O-5 and prior enlisted, I had that happen to me and I had that same reaction. Hated it when officers would just walk by. As an O-1 at a training school it was a pain in the butt because walking in or out of a building my arm was constantly up the entire time since every enlisted person had to have a return salute and then I had to salute every O-2 and above. As an O-4 in Kuwait I had two Marines, obviously down from Iraq, walk past me and didn't salute but did acknowledge me verbally. About ten feet behind them were two Soldiers who looked directly at me and did nothing but kept walking. I stopped them and addressed the lack of appropriate rendering of a salute. I ensured they knew why I let the Mainese pass because I didn't want them getting into a bad habit while in country but I was enforcing the Army rules on the Soldiers. I heard the two Maines laughing as they could over hear my conversation as they kept walking.
