When Midwives Were Considered Witches

When is a midwife not a midwife? Perhaps when she's a witch?
Our librarian explains the link between midwifery and witches, as described in the infamous and controversial 15th century witch hunting guide, Malleus Maleficarum.

A few essential notes to the commentary: 1. Cramer added Sprenger's name as the co-author to make this "Mass-Murder Manual" more credible. Sprenger didn't have much to do with the creating of this murder manual. 2. The Catholic church had authorized the use of this book to brutally murder thousands of women. 3. The second part of the book also describes how to nullify the effects of witchcraft and methods of destroying witches. 4. The third part of the book is written in a manner of judicial instructions to secular judges, although, there were no "secular" courts at the time per se. It fully authorises torture by Ecclestical judges to extract a confession from the victim. Ironically, once the confession was extracted, the Church had washed its hands off the murder by handing the victim over to the authorities with clear penal instructions. 5. From the very beginning of the book women are identified as witches and men as victims. 6. "Majority" here means - 85% of the victims 7. There was a proverb in Europe - "Nine million witches were burned". A number of historians thought this is an exaggerated number, yet even a fraction of this number, if true, should be a crime against humanity, and against a minority. This number is magically shrinking every decade by means of "historical research" 8. Remarkably, it all happened as Europe entered the Renaissance, after the dark ages was over, under the watchful eyes of the Catholic church, for over three hundred years. 9. Majority of these victims were burned to death after suffering inhumane amount of torture. 10. The entire Western intelligentsia have erased this human tragedy from its psyche. 11. Popular media, film, entertainment industry exclusively bolsters the evil portrayal of these women and profit from it. 12. Society in general do not even think to put The Catholic Church on trial for a crime against women of this gigantic magnitude. Wish your commentary had touched off on at least one or two of those horrific, nightmarish facts.

These are all blatantly false lmao. Here's why: 1. 3 years after Malleus Maleficarum was written, the Catholic church banned the book. The vatican called the book "a worse crime in heresy in its notable animus against women" 2. It was the protestant that did the witch hunt, the proof is that it happened in Renaissance and not the "dark age" (where the Catholic have total rule on the continent). 3. The fear of magic were brought by the ancient latin/greek texts in Renaissance era. The ancient people were VERY AFRAID of magic, thus this caused mass panic towards "magic". 4. Most protestants LOVES depicting Catholicism as zealous, evil, and backwards. This is actually not true, so before stating false facts try studying both sides before coming into a conclusion. For example, it's depicted that Spanish Inquisition are bloody, but in reality the Spanish inquisition actually very tame AND they actually didn't execute "witches". Most witch cases in Spanish inquisition required the "witch" to show her magic, before considering them guilty where most if not all can't practice magic (even women who blatantly proclaimed themselves as witches). Basically "innocent until proven guilty", which was pretty modern than those "proclaimed" enlightened secular trials. For more information, just search "Spanish Black Legends" or "Leyenda negra".

@@DarkKnight-em7ue Laughable misinformation effort, still sponsored by the Catholic church. Malleus Maleficarum was a bestseller for 200 years in Europe. Murders of hundreds of thousands of women and children always had the Pope's blessing. That vile murder manual was sponsored by the Catholic Church alone. It was a must for all Inquisitors, along with their torture kit. Europe has museums of these torture kits, all endorsed by the Catholic Church. Catholic Church is beginning to pay heavy price for denial and for lack of rectification - losing followers faster than any other major faiths. Yet they are still at it. Anyone can check the most popular Wikipedia articles for references on the number of murders. They are shrinking fast. We have very precise stats on deaths, population and demographic data of the black plague. Yet the murders, directly committed by the Catholic Church, those numbers are shrinking like magic. Check the so-called references in these articles, the so-called researchers are Church educated, and church paid - often with very poor academic credentials. Catholic Church's effort in worldwide covering up sexual abuse is a recent example. Cardinal Bernard Law had one regret only: Police, Courts and the judiciary would not help him with the coverup. What a shame.

It's interesting that Kramer put an emphasis on midwifes, but they never became a special target in the witch hunts. Instead they focused on social outsiders as well as the higher middle class.

Sounds like that was the prevailing theory on women in the catholic church, even the pope signed a "bull" (a written authorization) giving this guy the go ahead to run this inquisition.

John Chrysostom (late 4th century) was not what we consider a Catholic today, he was an archbishop of the early Christian Church which was in Constantinople, Byzantine Empire. Other than Malleus Maleficarum such quotes can't be traced to J. Chrysostom. It was also partially derived from Matthew 19 where it is spoken about divorce. Even Matthew 19 has multiple translations and interpretations. When text is analyzed one must not take words out of context. Heinrich and Jacob took words out of context and you see the consequences. We should not continue to do the same.

Did the video mention Islam? I believe, in Islam witchcraft was not for women only and there was no witch hunt whatsoever in Eastern society. Historically, women had a respectable place. Moreover in the European Dark Ages, the Eastern world was having its golden Ages. women were warriors and leaders and were not taken for inferior nor for witches. However witchcraft, not doctors nor midwives, but witchcraft was condemned. It is believed that if you ever learn it you would not go to heaven. Never did they condemn women for being a disaster nor force them to stay at home, nor burn them in the name of religion accusing them of witchcraft. Some men certainly tried and used religion to silence women and only succeded in the Eastern's Dark Ages with the rise of Europe. I also believe the bible did not say to burn women, it was the corrupt church and the blinded popes. Nevertheless, the Bible undertook too many changes and corrections for me to believe a thing in it. This is just some of what I know from my limited knowledge. ( why am I answering a comment from years ago XD) If you know s.thing I don't please tell me because this is what my research is about.

I'm not mad, St. John Chrysostom's description of woman is applicable just as much today ... We can most certainly be frienemies; punishment - pain - pleasure; necessary evil - can't live with them, can't live without them; we are tempting; clearly we're desirable disasters; and most assuredly we can be delightfully detrimental at times. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I can't cosign being a danger in the home in a literal sense, but sadly, we could be a danger in destroying "happy" homes, but most certainly we're not alone - it takes two to tango. 💃🏻
