Two major reasons this song should've been kept: 1. It shows Scrooge's pain regarding this memory significantly better. The very fact he starts singing along with her lets the audience know how hurt he is by this and how he's been hanging on ever since it happened since he remembers the lyrics so effortlessly. 2. The ending song, The Love We Found, hits way harder since it's a reflection of this song and shows the peace Scrooge finally came to.

Also it’s just weird and jarring to have the muppets suddenly crying their eyes out just because somebody walked out of frame. (And I know they’re meant to be sad because the engagement’s been called off, but it just doesn’t have the same weight.)

@VV4FF13Z Same... I finally watched a copy online because I've lost my ancient tape, and when this song didn't play it felt so wrong. I was 6 when this movie came out, and it taught me that Michael Caine is a BOSS. This scene was no small part of that, even then. I understood that "Goodbye forever" was a really sad thing, and it also proved he had a heart in there because I could see it breaking *again* for something from so long ago. As an adult - nobody can break your heart & keep you coming back to it like Paul Williams can

@@lilMissmAlice I totally agree. This came out when I was 10 and it was the turning point for the whole movie. It was the time he appeared to actually be moved deeply by his past with regards to his present. Sure not all kids will like it. But not all of anybody likes everything. Kids are fully capable of recognizing the feeling and deep meaning of a scene even if they lack the life experience to fully empathize.

As someone who had a VHS version of this film with the song growing up, I was absolutely gutted when I found out it was cut from most later versions. I'll never understand it. This is one of the most powerful emotional moments in the film --- not to mention one of the most important moments in Scrooge's life. Not only does "The Love We've Found," not make sense without it, but this scene doesn't even really make sense either. He says, "I love you, Belle," she says, "You did once," and then leaves, and we see Rizzo crying. It's all very abrupt, and completely changes the feeling of the scene. A moment that's supposed to be heartbreaking and emotional just ends up feeling... chilly.

this scene was so perfect because it really shows Scrooge's character depth. You see young Scrooge leave so you assume "oh he must have never really loved her" THEN you see old Scrooge try to sing along as almost as if it's like an old song they shared as a couple and despite years of not hearing it, he does remember it. This indicates that he does remember Belle. He does remember loving her deeply and upon seeing his reaction, he does deeply regret letting her go

Jumping to KZread, or VHS like someone mentioned in another thread, can be a cumbersome process. It's a classic and the story is focused on Scrooge's emotional transformation. This song helps us see this and children can have a couple minutes to contemplate emotions that they might not ordinarily. 2:43 is very good directing. You can clearly see young Scrooge is in a catch 22 situation. He had to choose what he most wanted: Belle or his money. And he simply choose money over his own domestic partner by walking away. The present day Scrooge has strongly implied to have remembered to what he had done after so many years and he breaks down in guilty for being selfish. And even though he redeemed nothing can ever heal the pain Scrooge caused himself. In other words he is left to live with for what he had done until he dies.

I feel fortunate to have grown up with this not being cut. I do admit it made me cry every time. As a musician it works so well musically. As an artist it works so well contextually and thematically it's a disservice to cut it and rob everyone of one of the most visceral points of the story. He let romantic love get away to focus on greed for money. This scene and song truly depicts heartbreak in hindsight. It should be learned through this as to avoid direct experience if possible. Plus it's just such an epic apex of writing and execution of music and cinema combined it's deeply a tragedy to have lost it on modern audiences. I think they just thought it was too heavy for kids but in a world where maturity equals violence it's a welcome yet subtle peek into adulthood that can advantageously be appreciated.

Not only is the song powerful, but the acting from everyone (not just Michael Caine) was frankly phenominal...at least I think so... The look she gives him near the start of the song where her body leans away but her head leans towards like she's talking herself into this course despite the pain...his continued gestures of affection growing more and more halfhearted as understanding dawns...seeing him turn back -- even when blurry -- for one last look before walking away... Hell, even the bridge! She comes onto the bridge from one direction with Young Scrooge on the left side, and Michael Caine's Scrooge approaches from the right and NEVER crosses the bridge because he can't go backwards in life to a time where this mistake could be fixed...It's all amazing

This was my favorite Christmas movie as a child and still is 25 years later. I can’t explain how every year I watch this movie the sadder it gets for me. Even as a kid I felt the hurt but didn’t fully understand why. This movie taught us about heartbreak at a young age and it’s stuck with me. I’ve had a Belle in my life and I’m still hurt from it and trying to shake it but it feels impossible. I know it’s pathetic because it’s the Muppets, but the song and scene in this movie is so powerful I’m amazed not many people know about it.

I'll never get this being cut out of the film, considering how much it emphasises how Scrooge went wrong and is hurt inside by regret over his past choices, and shows that When Love Is Found is a reprisal of the song later in the film with a positive outcome. Hell, the makers didn't have any problem with Martina McBride doing a version of When Love Is Gone for the end credits - why cut _this_ version out? Mind you, as powerful as this song and scene is, I have to ask - why the hell is Belle SMILING throughout when this is supposed to be heartbreaking?!

I never saw the film with the song included, I never even knew it existed until I discovered the scene a few years back on YT. But even without knowing there was a song cut, I always found the transition weird. She just says "you did once" and then leaves. No explanation, no goodbye, no emotion, nothing. It made Rizzo's sudden burst into tears over something as trivial and unemotional as that seem all the more exaggerated. I always found it strange that a movie that's so well-constructed would give so little thought to the most important part of the story... the break-up of Scrooge and Belle. Turns out it DID give the scene a lot of thought. I can see some people finding this song boring, it's definitely not in the same style as the rest of the movie. But even so, it's essential in my view. So essential, that it was missed without even knowing it existed. Very good that they found it!

Yeah, the scene makes more sense with the song in it. With Scrooge saying “I love you, Belle”, and Belle saying “ you did once” without her transitioning to the song, it comes off more as just her saying “🤬 you.” And walking away. It’d be like if in Bambi, they showed the clip of Bambi and his mom eating the new spring grass, and just cutting straight to the part where the Great Prince says “your mother can’t be with you anymore”. Or if in The Lion King, if the gorge scene started with Scar tricking Simba about the quote-on-quote “surprise” and then just cutting away to him telling Simba to run away. But, with the song included, this gives this scene the emotional punch it’s supposed to have, especially given that a major part of the story of A Christmas Carol is that the pain of Scrooge’s breakup with Belle played a big part in turning him into a stingy cheapskate.

The problem was Disney cut it from the theatrical version but included it in the VHS release, then lost the negatives that contained the scene, meaning they could never properly upscale and restore it to match the rest of the film. Oh right the full version is under extras. They should do that with Star Wars and have the original cuts of the films under extras on Disney+.

It's on Disney + in the Extras section! I always pause the movie at that scene, then go to the extras to watch it, then back to the movie. A bit cumbersome but I have to watch that scene.

Yes, I always pause the movie before this scene and pull up this clip on my iPad so that I can see the complete movie. It’s not the same movie without this scene. Thank You So Much!!

Amazon's version is like that too. I need to bite the bullet and try to find a decent VCR so I can use my VHS next year.

Watched this movie the other night and was gutted to see this song taken out! It was one of the most important songs in the movie. Emotional even to my child self back then

when Scrooge touches Belle's shoulder and she walks away saying "I wish you well..." the look in both young and old Scrooge is quite telling. Such a good scene

Thank you for putting this online. This is my favorite Christmas movie and this cut really hurts. There was little reason for it. I am grateful it still exists somewhere. A bad call.

This song alone really demonstrates how scrooge became so angry and bitter all these years. Initially he of course already started to become "another man" causing his breakup, and then the breakup itself consumed him with regret and disgust with himself for letting go of true love. When he cries at the end of the song, it's really a turning point when he realizes he has wasted his entire life being alone.

I have to admit that as a kid I never fully realised the true meaning of this scene and the full emotional weight of it. I always fast forwarded it on my VHS tape because I thought it was so boring because it was a slow song. But now as an adult i can fully understand and appreciate the beauty of this scene. But more so I can appreciate the heartbreak that Scrooge shows and the pure regret for his past choices.... I am so sad they cut this from the film on Disney Plus... I truly appreciate it now amd can relate on a level I am also ashamed to admit... Thank you for uploading it.

What a shame they kept this out. Not only is it great for character building and provide context for the scene and why Scrooge is so heartbroken, it also provides a great bridge for the final song of the movie, "The Love We Found".

The scene simply does not even work without this song. Nor the resolution in the “the Love We Found.”

Yes. It was earlier in the month that it was announced that the scene was found and being restored to the film. It was questionable if it would be on Disney+ this year but it's to be put into the 4K version of the film. Hopefully next -holiday- Christmas it will be on a new blu-ray release.

@@stephenshelton4267 WHAAAAT??? Is this really true? I, a grown woman, am actually crying right now I am so hopeful and excited. My husband thinks I'm insane for being so obsessed with this scene but it changes the trajectory of the entire story! I have been watching and crying during this song since I was 5 years old (my age in 1992, lol). I have been trolling the internet for YEARS for pointers on getting a version with the song back and even bought a DVD other reviewers insisted had the song just to be sorely disappointed.

@@pattiwalker2602 I agree, its a critical part of the story and yes they announced its discovery about a year ago. A couple months ago I checked Amazon for an updated version of the film and didn't see anything yet.
