Critical Mas(s) with Massad Ayoob is a show that provides expert analysis over a wide range of contemporaneous topics related to civilian and law enforcement self-defense, the use of force, and second amendment issues, provided by a renowned and established author with a career spanning decades in training law enforcement officers and the public at large, who is frequently called upon to provide expert witness testimony.
ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught
for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
Mas has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part-time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group. He has
appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two
years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

And my memory of that very brief encounter is of a true gentleman who immediately put you at ease and treated you like an old friend. Very rare brand of class. New to the channel and am enjoying soaking these videos in. Great stuff.

I would have never guessed where I am today. Since 45, I've been retired due to a medical issue. Absolutely loved working, but that was taken from my by a man with a Dr degree who butchered my neck. So bad that I had to have second surgery in a few months after the 1st to repair what he destroyed only to have a 3rd a few years later. Actually in as bad of shape as i was after the 1st butchering..... To those who work, consider yourself fortunate. Retiring young isn't a blessing!!!

Massad Ayoob is awesome! I love how he referenced the relationship between teaching and learning. It rings true with me - at one point in my career, I did some college teaching and my dad, who also taught for a fair amount of his career said, "When you teach, you learn" and went on to say, "A good teacher shows you how much YOU know, not how much he knows". Wise words and I think largely about humility, which is arguably among the best positive human traits one can possess. I sincerely appreciate Mr. Ayoob's wisdom and the humility he shows. Thanks for the great content!

Here is an amusing anecdote I want to share: Years ago I was teaching a firearms class for new security guards. During the session I was teaching how to point shoot in a self defense situation. I turned and fired 6 rounds from my revolver into the B-24 silhouette. I turned back around and asked if there were any questions. One hand went up in the back and I said go ahead...the student sheepishly said, " sir, you shot the wrong target..." I turned around and sure enough, wrong target. Lots of egg on face and we all had a laugh. Thank you Mas for your videos.

Having been in a self defense shooting and dealing with the aftermath from the reaction of family to mental health challenges I am wondering what common themes happen long after the smoke clears and you are still standing. My biggest challenge was replaying the events of that night looking for what I could have done differently but I eventually reached the conclusion that most people would have done worse. There’s certain limitations that the mind can only process so much information and the decision has to be made to fire in fractions of a second. But in that instant when the decision has been made to take a life to save your own and the people you love there is no going back. I have had lots of training to get through a fight alive but nothing has prepared me for the next set of challenges. Thank you for your show and for keeping the public informed.

Mr. Ayoob, I thoroughly enjoyed your video episode 66 on “When Life Takes You Unexpected Places.” In this video as well as your other videos, you present strong, logical & compelling reasons for lawfully armed citizens to protect themselves. I would like to see another one of your compelling videos on why the Nashville Police should release Hale’s partially redacted (protect school employees, students & their security) manifesto. Based on a April 3, 2023 CNN article, Nashville City Council Member, Courtney Johnston said she was told “Hale’s manifesto was a blue-print on total destruction.” The shooter, Hale, is deceased, the public knows the names of her victims. The public needs to know what the manifesto states & the motive so we can try to thwart another tragedy like this in the future.

I have been so thrilled to find this channel here on KZread. I have followed Mr Ayoob since my college Days at Norwich University, and then through a 22 year career as a federal law enforcement officer and collateral duty firearms instructor. I consider him to be one of my mentors or perhaps even gurus. Do you think one of the Rock Island, Taurus or Charter Arms , 2" or 3" , .357 magnum revolvers is worth buying? The price point is the only reason I'm considering one of those. I realize price and quality are generally proportional when it comes to firearms. I'm retired because of a tumor in my head and neck that left me with a left side deficit. But when I was working I had a high GS grade and made a good wage and great overtime. Due to a bad choice in fiance, I ended up selling several firearms from my collection, and the one I regret to this day was my little stainless Ruger Security Six, .357 magnum with a 2 3/4 inch barrel. Now that I can no longer work the slide of a larger semi auto, I've gone to using my two Vaqueros as my personal defense handgun. But I deeply lament my little Ruger which I had purchased in college for under $100. I'd like a new .357 magnum , but I've found the prices to be way out of reach on retirement pay. Who wouldn't love a beautifully fitted Colt python, or even a nice GP 100, but the cost of such means going without groceries or medication.

Massad you are so correct when you say that we must never stop learning especially the older we get. Also if no one hears your side of the story false accusations are the only thing that is heard. While one has to be extremely cautious when responding, undisputed facts are always hard to prove false and that erodes those irresponsible statements.

I think I was reading Massad's stuff in the magazines in the early 1970's, great content and always entertaining and brilliant. The "Gun World" is very fortunate to have him! To Massad: What kind of content would I like? I yearn for the good old days of enjoying shooting without all the crime statistics, blah, blah, blah. Upbeat aspects of the shooting sports existed before and I think it is what attracted me to it in the first place. Funny thing: I like the power / technology / innovation / "the looks" of guns but just never wanted to associate them with death or killing or crime. It's a sport or an interest to me I guess. Keep up the good work!

Like your videos and comments always learn something every time and listen and watch one of your videos. I grew up on a farm retired as a lineman after 33 years doing line work I be 64 now. I didn't start carrying till I got into my 30s and I have been carrying every since. And I agree a great responsibility comes with it.

Mas and Paul Harrell ,are my go to guys for anything gun, and related law issues. You two are the very best ! Question I have; the television cop shows, “seem to me “to show “more “stupidity than the correct intelligent action needed by the LEO’s ! Forever high speed Car chases, obvious pit maneuvers avoided, Shots Fired, Show me your hands, repeated in excess and not effective. Wrestling with a suspect ,they take risks to lose their firearms, and get shot with it ! If an officer is capable, why is striking ,when needed, not used to render the bad guy unable to cause harm ? Just the way I view it. No offense intended,to all police officers, really ! ! We badly need and appreciate them in today’s society ! Thanks for all you do ! 👍🏻

I would read your articles in MAN/MAGNUM magazines in South Africa in the late 70's and 80's. You are a force to be reckoned with, and an outstanding teacher.
