**What percentage of 11 and 12 year olds have social media?
An estimated 20% of kids between 8-12 years old, are using social media -- despite rules on most platforms that require users to be at least 13 to create an account.
** Why is the age limit for Social Media 13?
Congress passed a law called the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in 1998 due to concerns about companies or other random people online collecting information from kids--like their name, phone number--and later photos and location--without parents' knowledge. The law considered children a "vulnerable" group that should be protected from data mining.
**How does social media negatively affect youth?
Research shows that most kids start experimenting with sharing their own data online when they're 11 to 13, but don't start to understand the risks and the consequences of what they do online until they are 14 to 16. If kids are active online, they have more chances of experiencing online predators, identity theft, cyberbullying, and people accessing their personal information. Another study found that kids' brains are still developing and highly sensitive to acceptance and rejection.
**How does social media positively affect youth?
Some research shows that social media can make young teens feel more confident and less lonely and depressed. They can use social media to find support for everything from organizing around a cause to dealing with mental illness.

How old? Mental states have never universally equated with with age, but I'm over 40 years old and I'm not sure I'm ready yet. In 1982, I was programming on a TI 994A Texas Instruments Home Computer. I even sat in on some college classes (yes, I was young), so I've been involved with tech for awhile now. I got in on social media early, too. Then, I deleted my accounts. Now I'm here to study, and I have the barest essentials for my business - but I steer clear otherwise. Why? Social media is designed to put you in a bubble. It was polarizing me. I was becoming increasingly biased and less scientific. I was surprised at how little I miss it. Maybe it's my age, but I like a simpler life.

I'm really glad social media didn't exist when I was a kid because I wouldn't have used it responsibly and it would have affected my self-esteem. I was bullied IRL and I'm sure it would have been much worse online. I can see how it benefits some, but I would set the minimum age at 16. Kids need to have more practice interacting IRL and figuring out who they are. All this screen time can't be good for developing brains.

@@AboveTheNoise Because of the way Children's Online Privacy Protection Act was designed, many websites found it easier to just banish kids under 13 altogether instead of asking for parental consent as the law normally requires. Unfortunately, keeping on banishing kids ain't going to work. They will still lie about their age. We have only two things to do. First, it's obtain parental consent however we can. Second, it's storm and raze the FTC building to show them what they did in the name of kids online privacy.

I’m not sure there is an appropriate age here. Seems to me that even the wisest, most mature adults can fall victim to the detrimental aspects of social media. But then again, the average 20 year old is surely better equipped for it than the average 7 year old. This is certainly tricky but I’m gonna say age 14 is probably old enough for most kids. Of course it will vary from person to person.

Pfftt....I had a Friendster before Myspace was even a thing. Myspace was great because of the customization ability. I think Facebook is really dumb, and don't have one. I think it stopped being "cool" when everyone's grandma was on there. The whole social media thing is just projections that everyone else is all smiles and having fun. Instagram is the same thing. People don't post pictures of themselves bright and early looking like a mess even though that's how most of us wake up. Kids and social media is hard, because like you said, the kids will want to be on it more if you tell them it's bad.

I started roblox when I was young, and as a child I was decently mature. Roblox is for mature users, if you don’t think your child is mature enough for roblox don’t let them use it. Yes, I agree there are scams and such on roblox but scams are apart of life and if anything letting your child play roblox wouldn’t be the end of the world. It’s okay to let loose and let your child explore what the internet has the offer, but make sure you check up on them. (Idk if you have a kid or not, but you seem like a concerned parent.)

I know this wasn't really the point of the video but I feel like KZread isn't true social media in the way that Facebook and Twitter are, but it often gets grouped with them. Like people don't generally follow their friends and most people who watch videos don't post them. To me KZread is more like short form Netflix that happens to have a comment section. And you wouldn't call Netflix social media. But maybe that's just cause I don't hang out in the comments much.

Social media is just another way for people to interact. Sure bad things can happen, but they can happen at Scouts, or the Y, or the park, or at whatever the neighborhood hangout is, or Church, or school. In fact, they can be even worse in those places, where people have physical access. It isn’t “what age” but “how”, and “what are the rules”, “what spaces” and “how do we make it safe”. Safe spaces, supervision or at least some adult oversight, rules of behaviour, paying attention when people are having problems, teaching kids what to look out for, who to come to, how to say “no”,... this is what we do in RL. Why any different on MySpaceBook or whatever?

It depends. People of all ages are affected by things like the Echo Chamber effect, which is more harmful than the effects on Children in some cases. And everyone matures differently. Maybe 18 would be rough good average age since teens tend to be self conscious. And they should rather be in touch in real life. For activism, they can start from their parents account too. No big deal if you ask me. Best thing would be to raise awareness in children(and adults too) that receiving attention online doesn't actually mean anything. For children, this needs to be shown with a real life example. Edit: I just noticed.. Why does this channel have so few subscribers?!

@@thelivingdead1728 well it depends for what you'll gonna use social media. Cause I remember I know that 9 year olds would want to entertain themselves like with minecraft let's plays and travel bloggers for example, learn stuff thanks to math youtubers and also talk to their friends and see where they were using Instagram. So I don't see a problem, but the parents have to control it.

I don't know what age is appropriate (though I'm inclined to say around 13-18 at the lowest), but i just think it's a shame that our youth are being indoctrinated into the world of social media before they know the risks or consequences of their actions on social media. It's a complex system that thrives on the exploitation of impulsive behaviors, which are all too common among children and teens. There are even many adults who get taken advantage of by social media platforms.
