I actually used your "love people and use things, because the opposite never works" quote in my salutatorian speech at my graduation. I ended my speech with this because I wanted people to think about the way they are living and maybe ways they can change their life style. A lot of people told me that it was the best graduation speech they had ever heard and they were very intrigued by the idea of minimalism, I told them to look you up. So thank you for showing me that the important things in life aren't things at all, they are the people that we love.

Not buying things "now" but rather sleeping over it, in order to discover if it really brings value to your life, is not taking it too far - it's just smart. People are spending far too much money on impulse.

I think people that count their things are more obsessed with being a minimalist. And they are extreme minimalists. I paired down my things. Keeping only what I value. And only buying what I can afford. My real reason of becoming a minimalist is my son has severe autism. He is going to be 10 this year. Once he’s an adult or when the school system starts to fail helping him I want to be able to move anywhere and not have to worry about dragging my stuff place to place. I plan on living in an autism friendly area in about ten years. And the stuff I do keep will be light to travel. Having less stuff means I could get rid of old stuff and just buy new. I live in a townhouse right now and it’s working well. We have a great community and there are things walkable and things close by to drive to. But if things change and we need to move the stress of moving won’t be as bad I think we all have interesting stories on why we became minimalist. Can you do a podcast on reasons why. I think the more minimalist awareness ( just like autism awareness) the more people realize it’s something they want to do too. I think I’ve probably got a few of my family and friends to start purging their stuff and join me on this awesome lifestyle. They are actually a lot happier because of it. Most people are afraid of it because they see too many extreme minimalist just getting rid of everything. These people do it because of something in their lives like they want to travel or they want to save money or some real big reason. You don’t have to be extreme to be a minimalist.

I'm still not quite a minimalist; I'm still finding my way. But as a young adult, I'm so happy that I've had the influence of minimalists in my life enough to know that consuming more and more things won't make me happy. I feel so blessed that there are others out there sharing their stories so that I can enter my adult life, minimalist or not, armed with their knowledge. Thank you. I also do the 30-day wait before purchasing, especially since I am still in college. Another thing I've noticed is that not only do I end up buying less but the things that I do purchase mean that much more once I choose to get them.

Love these! Almost a year ago my husband and I discussed moving to a new state, downsizing, and trying something new. Consuming less. Saving more. We chopped our living space in half and got rid of a bunch of stuff. I am still going through things today, re evaluating what I use and don't use on a regular basis. Your message was a huge part of that decision. Thanks for sharing your "recipe" of success!

Hi Hosh, thank you for this video :) It gave me the "push" I needed to curate my CD "collection" again, and I was able to reduce it by a third this time (I use little steps to declutter). Thanks to you and Ryan, I often ask myself questions like "How would my life be better with less", "What does not serve me", "What doesn't add value to my life (anymore)". And from time to time, ideas come up and it ables me to declutter, step by step.

I think minimalism is a journey. The more we question and eliminate the more we question if the item truly gives us value. It’s a process.

  • @robbien.3964

Interesting take. My first thought was you’ve taken it too far when you start decluttering other people’s things without their permission. For example, I’m grateful that my husband seems to be getting over his attachment to so many things, but if I came home to find out he had gotten rid of something of mine (like a purse or book) without asking, then that would be crossing a line.

Yes! I still get urges to buy things just because I think it’ll make me happy when it won’t it’ll just sit and collect dust. I am working on my own minimalism journey and I am enjoying it! But I still every once in a while I still want to buy things but I wait five minutes and that helps me not buy things I don’t need! And I also realized I have to stop caring what people think about my wardrobe and what I really want to be wearing! I chose to stop caring and I now keep my fancy clothes for events and parties but everyday clothes is a pair of blue jeans and a plain black t shirt for work or home! I am loving not spending x amount of time picking out something to wear to work or for the day! Hooray! I couldn’t be happier now that I’ve let myself be me and do what I want to do and stop caring that x person said you can’t wear the same shirt everyday!

Minimalism changed me for sure. I think about $ and stuff differently. I buy for my kids differently. Got more than 1 bank account and an actual savings. I may have a day I fall off but I get back on, no impulse spending and I'm realizing more and more of why I used to shop...emotional stuff caused me shop instead of me just dealing with the issue. Minimalism is my way of life. I've had the same Coach bag for 4 yrs, in practically new condition and until the strap breaks I'm not getting a new 1 but I know ppl that buy tons of cheap Forever 21 bags and have spent more than my 1 bag. If I do get a new bag, it'll be a bday or holiday gift, not a "just because" purchase like before.

How do I fill the emptiness after i’ve Purged the majority of my things? What do I replace my visits to the mall with with once i’ve Finished getting rid of stuff, at the moment the task of sorting and clearing out is taking up my time but how do I deal with the emotions that come up after it is all gone. Will I suddenly be motivated to take up hiking or running? I can’t hide behind all my stuff anymore and busy myself with cleaning or collecting or organising it. Is there an essay on this?

Helped 12 year old grandson clean out closet and dresser. Thought I would install an organizer... now, no need. Clothes fit in the drawers and closet is pretty much empty. He kept going after I had to leave. Big lesson for nana.. they don’t need all of the toys we buy. I told him I will take him with me to buy clothes so he can pick what he “will wear” and continue to pay for camps / experiences. I was amazed at how easy it was for him. He just wanted clear space. My granddaughter is next... different kid entirely.😜

So I was all set to scoff at this video, like "Dude, could you just answer the question like a real person and not some poncy minimalist preacher?" The regret of giving up something valuable is a real fear that non-minimalist have, and they need to know that it CAN happen, but that it's not the end of the world. That being said, I appreciate the idea of deliberate temporary deprivation. Testing out giving up something that I DO use, but could maybe get by without, is a really intriguing exercise that I think could have a lot of benefits. Thanks for the inspiration. Maybe your counterpart could take a stab at the original question, tho...

Josh, Been a big fan for a long time... Thanks for all you do. I have incorporated minimalism in my life (still have a way to go)..my question is.. I have a wife who I love and have been with for 28 years .. 23 years married...We have ALWAYS live a maximalist life. We spent every penny we made (and then some) and that was how my kids were raised and now that I discovered minimalism and want to scale back greatly. My wife and kids do not. They like their lifestyle and want to keep it. It is really swimming upstream and discouraging to fight against it. I understand their point. They are happy and living the way they want for 27 years and now I want to change it...Why should they?? The question is... How do I keep everyone happy??

There's a couple of things you could try. I'm no expert, and I live with two adult maximalists who are tough customers when it comes to change, so take it with a grain of salt. But, first off communication is key. Your partner needs to understand where you're coming from and why. The heart of it is that you want to spend more energy and time (and money) on her and your family and your experience of life, right? Really get your motivations across. From there, I'd say small changes are best. Start with stuff that's just yours. Clothes, tools, hobby items. Let them see you downsize and demonstrate how much easier it is. Then, you can try proposing a simplified system for some household process that would benefit everybody (For my household, it was meal planning to reduce waste and eating out. Everybody liked having home-cooked food on-hand). You could also try proposing a change for a period of time, to try it out. Or have a prize at the end for the kids. If we don't buy X for 6 months, we'll have the cash for X fun activity as a family. Best of luck on your journey! Remember that it won't happen all at once, baby steps are still progress.

It takes time and the more they understand how serious you are and they realize it’s not a fad they will come around. We all have been brainwashed to think if you have money you need to spend it. Not everyone is going to understand. But in time and your continued lifestyle change they will come around.

Most of the time they are okay. It is just once in a while something will come up and it might be a gift I've received but not from them. For example...I have a curio that has porcelain figurines in it. Every single one my father gave me as a gift. I never asked or picked out any. He passed away a few years ago and I have been slowly getting rid of them. I appreciate the thought and I once liked them but they are no longer my thing. My mother came for a visit and told me that when she passes she wants me to have her figurines. (My parents have been divorced many, many years btw). I tried to explain to her that I am currently letting them go. The look in her eyes was panic. I mean I know that if they are given to me after she passes that I am free to do whatever I want with them but people are exhausting sometimes. Lol

Mrsmomof2kids1 my mother in law was like that. She lectured me on selling stuff he gave us. I started giving her the stuff back. Now she doesn’t care anymore. I think it was more of a nasty game she played and she knew I’m not going to play. Also I’ve been doing this purging thing for five years and she knows I’m serious. I think your mom means well but she puts things ahead of memories. Tell her you will keep the memories and maybe take a picture of them. If they are worth money then selling them is the way to go. I have a few items of my moms, grandmas and my aunts that passed away. Eventually I will have to give the stuff away. I am leaving that to purge last.

Hey, Josh. I have a question: What are the drawbacks of Minimalism? I have been listening to your podcast for about a year now, and I would say that I am halfway through becoming fully uncluttered. My life has changed since accessing information about minimalism. However there is one thing that truly bothers me, and that is what are the drawbacks? I know as beautiful as minimalism sounds, it can't really be perfect, can't it? Most things in life have its advantages and drawbacks. So I would like to ask what do you think are the drawbacks of minimalism, and how you deal/ overcome these disadvantages. Thank you.

Hi Josh, @TheMinimalists I have been dealing with depression for about 7 years 1. because I'm always thinking about past regrets one in particular 2 because I think about the future and 3 because my mind can't relax because theres CONSTANT housework to be done.. (Right now the dishes are waiting to be done) :-/ My kids room, you can barely see the floor.. Anyway. I'm writing because I've downsized a few things in the past but recently i started the 30 day minimalism challenge I've gotten rid of almost 100 things in 19? days I don't have to much personal belongings left and of course i can only start with MY belongings before the household stuff and other peoples with their consent HOWEVER thats the problem.. My partner has been the bread winner for years and 99% of the 'stuff' belongs to him or the kids.. we have 'stuff' in every nook and cranny on the fridge on the kitchen floor (shoes/a small pilaff kitchen things+misc) the kids room, our room has a small pile he recently tidied the bathroom, the front room... I'm Going Insane, I know the house plays a part in my depression and he wants me to get better but he doesn't want to get rid of anything. During my challenge i asked the kids lets go through these boxes of games or art supplies that come in boxes from the store and make a bear etc HE was absolutely reluctant BECAUSE it will be winter soon they won't be able to go out and they'll have nothing to play with if you get rid of everything... the boxes were piled up months prior when they had no friends to play with because we just moved and not one box was taken out to play... we sorted them because i said the kids want to it's not me without there permission we sorted through and i got rid of a lot of boxes but not really the stuff because it all went into ONE art box or they got to keep a few board games and they got rid of a cpl they didn't want... he was SO reluctant but actually we didn't really get rid of much just the boxes. (Sorry its long) I feel like the only way i can cure my depression is to clear my mind clear the clutter clear the stress (he's a big part my step kids we argue because he says oh if it was yours it would be a different story, but I've literally done the same with them that i do mine) I can't take much more. I saw a quote, God can restore what is broken and turn it into something amazing All you need is FAITH. first of his last name and my kids name is Faith lol but it made me want to try a little bit longer don't give up yet... I'm going to talk with him I don't want to force him into anything but he won't let me go and he wants me to be better and for us to be happy but I want simple, stress free i swear if you could see my house.. When i complete my minimalism challenge I'll tag you I show my house before and after :-O I want to thank you and Ryan its the documentary that kicked it all of for me :-) XO *again SO sorry its long lol x

I know it is hard, it's hard for me, too! I have family members with depression, so I know a little bit of how it goes. If I may offer a suggestion, I would say to start small, and also remember who the adults in the house are. And remember whose money bought all those toys, so whose are they, really? Clearly your kids are not that attached to their toys if they didn't get them out all winter. I know this sounds mean, but I periodically sneak toys into the donate bin once my kids have outgrown them or just never ever play with them. They seriously never miss them. I don't know if you have explained to yours already about the concept of donation and helping others in need, but that would help plant the seed in their little brains, too. Kids get overwhelmed by choices easily, so do most of the purging yourself, and let them make a few decisions. Another idea to utilize is to have a Halfway Box, for stuff your hubby and kids aren't sure about. You can store it and if nothing gets used from it in "x" amount of time it gets donated! Some people call this a Christmas Box because they tape it up and write "Donate if not used by [insert date here]". Hope it helps. :)

I like the concept of minimalism, but I find it hard to get rid of the stuff. I have a LOT of craft stuff, I do not think I can purge, but I should.

I have a question. My question is in terms of being ready for an emergency? Do you have any prep items? And, is there a way to balance minimalism while still being adequately prepared for an emergency? I realized only so many things are necessary if a disaster is to happen, but there are over 100 uses for bandannas in an emergency, so I take that as 100 bandannas would be even better.

I have a sort of "bug-out" bag for hurricane season. There's one for me, one for my guy, and one for our pets, each no bigger than a standard backpack. I store them in the garage next to the pet carriers. If we have to evacuate in an emergency, it's grab and go. You can find great emergency kit packing lists online. Keep it compact and only essentials, and it's not so bad. Since it's confined to what fits in the bag, I can't go overboard. And who would want more than they can carry in an emergency, anyways?

That is a good idea. Of course, it is optimal to stay where you are, but in weather situations isn't always possible. Tough buying prepacked kits as everyones needs are different. But, do have some essentials in a backpack.

Hi. Ryan and joshua. Sabina from Denmark here. I love watching The Living room conversations. I don’t know if this is a question for The Living room conversations or The podcasts, but here goes... I was wondering if maybe you could touch up on The subject of growing up with very little, and then later on in life, having trouble getting rid of stuff, because of that? I guess it comes from a fear of lacking, What are your thoughts on that, and how do you overcome that struggle? And one more thing, once you are done with the initial decluttering, how do you discover your “more” of the “less” to truely benefit from minimalism?

Thanks for these videos, I love them. Now, Somebody that can help me. I struggle every day with my own thoughts, like I overthink everything. My problem is that, how can I sell my stuff that I don't use anymore that i don't have the receipt for? I always think that people will think that these items are stolen or something. Can anybody give me tips for this? Thanks.

As a minimalist owning fewer clothing, how many times do you deem it alright to wear certain clothes over before they get washed?

If you live in a hot climate and/or sweat a lot, and/or have any conditions that cause you to have extra odor, you may need to wash your clothes more often, and because of that, own a few more sets of clothes than the ultimate minimalists. It's all about what works for you!

Ignoring the financial aspects, what are you thoughts on renting vs purchasing a home. You always seem to rent and thus I guess this gives you more flexibility. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Paul.

I’ve read somewhere, most minimalist are thin. Do you find this to be true? I have less belongings than most. I can get rid of just about anything except for these unwanted pounds. Just asking, comment not meant to offend anyone. Didn’t you lose weight too when you became a minimalist?

I consider myself a minimalist but I am not in some specific fields. For example I love to have a big variety of clothes to chose from because the right outfit boost my confidence therefore I do own a lot of "unnecessary" clothes. However none of my clothes is never used, most of them are unnecessary but I use all of them considering a long period of time. Do you think that this is OK? Thanks for the inspiring work!
