Toriyama dropped the ball by making the sequel, Super, about most of the legacy characters like Goku and Vegeta getting stronger. It *would've* been better *if* he passed the torch to the next generation and the story be about adventure, one that would come to a close eventually.
Dragonball GT is better than people give it credit for, even though it does have its problems. It at least has less continuity issues than Dragonball Super by far. Dragonball GT a hero's legacy was a good epilogue for Dragonball in general.

Can u tell how to watch this movie
I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for GT. There are a few plot points I enjoy and I love the look and execution of SSJ4. It also always felt a bit more like a spiritual successor to the original DB than DBZ, and appreciated how the creators tried to tie the whole saga together that way.

I always thought if GT was redone the right way, it would have been an epic sequel to Z.
@powerjolt7215

@Emiliano Diaz GT done the right way could've even surpassed Z. Looking at the arcs simplified, you have: Traversing space. The whole galaxy. Facing a parasite that has a grudge against your species. Hell opening up. The consequences of your actions. Every arc really has that "your past coming back to bite you". Goku becomes a kid the first saga and it resets him a bit, he's wished to be a kid busy enemies he beat long ago. Baby wants revenge for what the saiyans did to him and Vegeta/Goku are keeping Saif race alive. Super 17 is meant to be the ultimate revenge machine to finally get back at Goku for what he did as a kid. The Shadow dragons is self explanatory. I actually have a good idea for a whole GT rewrite that gives a little something for everyone.
I’ve never watched the GT series, but the ending with Goku Jr. going off to get the dragon balls to wish his grandmother Pan back to good health? Ahh… my heart…. I grew up with DragonBall the series and absolutely LOVED the story driven anime.. so when Toonami started airing Dragon Ball Z, I enjoyed it for a while but then fell off because it lacked the DragonBall charm I fell in love with. So the ending to GT would have been such a beautiful nod to the humble beginnings of DragonBall
To be exact, GT is staged five years after Z. The famous "ten years" went out from some american spot or directly from USA FUN animation version (or something like that), but in the original japanese series, it is not said how much time is passed from Z, but in the officials guide books of GT ("Dragon Ball GT Perfect Files") is specified that are passed 5 years. The last episode of GT is in fact staged 40 years after the first encounter between Bulma and Goku.

All the great points you mentioned in this video are exactly why I like Dragonball more than the Z portion, I enjoy them both but the simplicity of a boy on an adventure to better him himself while getting stronger was perfect nothing felt excessive of overdone and its conclusion to that part of the story was great as well
Gt plays as the perfect sequel. It gave me the feeling of real Dragon Ball which I loved. We don't need characters just going stronger and stronger and fighting episode after episode. We just want to see them live and enjoy their adventures!
As far as GT goes I love the opening and the idea of black star dragon balls since they abused them so much turning into monsters themselves plus Baby was awesome along with my favorite transformation Ssj4 but Heros legacy is fun

Gt was flawed but it at least understood some of what made dragon ball great in it's prime unlike super which is mostly just fan service without build up.
I really liked the GT anime it sometimes gave me vibes of the original DB in its search for the dragon balls which really made me feel happy to see a journey and its comedic moments for the dragon ball like the old day. I think I would have loved to see Goku Jr go on his own hero's journey and find the dragon ball on his own as Goku did. Really nice video Axel it made me remember GT and how Dragon ball was a story, you made some good points that made me think about the series again.

Sadly that’s the thing that people disliked about the series
You didn't mention it here, but I've always loved how GT found a coherent way to introduce the movies into canon. I think Super 17 is the most overhated saga in all of Dragon Ball
I feel like a proper, canonical, good db sequel series would need to take the best of both GT and Super. The best of GT’s thematic story (mainly super baby arc, the concept of the shadow dragons saga and the ending) and Super’s thematic fighting (Zamasu’s hypocrite reason for erasing mortals, Vegeta vs Cabba, and like all of the tournament of power)
Pan and Trunks deserved better than GT. So did Uub.

Awww man this was such a throwback. Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z was my fave as a kid. It was so hard to find where to watch it that I had to watch it on german TV (we didn't have it in Romania) Still have a crush on Trunks :))
Goku wasn't an idiot in GT. Literally a child in body only and not mind. Super made me realize that with how stupid Goku is. GT had great concepts, just needed way better execution and character usage. Fights weren't all that good either choreography wise but story wise they had some strong backing. Vegeta also is great in GT. No animosity. Willing to work with Goku and proposes fusion. He still will get mad at him but not in a "damn you, clown stay out of my way" but a funny banter kind of way.

Beautiful review. As of the end , I'll give you an explanation. At the end of GT , where Goku supposedly ascended to a supernatural figure , winning the fight and kind of becoming one with Shenron and the Dragonballs . It's possible that Goku healed a near dead Pan and revived Puck with his supposed omnipotency. I believe the makers did this and IMO did the right thing because killing of the 2 characters , after the meeting with Goku will make it really morbid and people won't like the film as much as they do .
@Nameless82284

I heard that too. I'm sure Goku is not allowed to do that but he decided to help Goku Jr. because he is his great-grandson and Goku Jr didn't know that he needed all seven Dragon Balls.
i loved gt and goku jr's story
Came here after the death of Akira Toriyama. RIP. A Hero’s Legacy really felt like something he could’ve created because it had so much of what made the original Dragon Ball special like you said. GT also had that but people seemed to have forgotten about the original Dragon Ball by then and just wanted to see muscly dudes fighting each other like they got in Z.
Great video
Oh man, having to come back to this after the death of Akira Toriyama I’m happy that you touch base on this axle
I vividly remember many parts of Dragon Ball when I was only 6. I couldn't place the events of the story in order (often because I was watching the non-canon movies), but could at least tell what the characters were feeling and why they were fighting. GT is the part of the franchise that I couldn't remember anything about, except Super Saiyan 4 which is still iconic in my mind. I didn't try to research the timeline whenever I felt nostalgic for the series, and hesitated to watch Super. I've seen realised it was because I couldn't what the themes of the series. Yes people love the series because of the cool fighting and character designs, but they fought because they had a reason to do it. Whether it was to save their loved ones, the world or because Goku cried too much as a child, every character felt palpable to me despite how unrealistic their strength and fights were. So this is why GT and Super failed to carry on the legacy of the original and other shonen series were able to pick up the pieces. They understood the Hero's Journey is about having your protaganist start at a disadvantage, but slowly they learn to develop themselves through training and character development. And by the time the journey is over the adversary is gone, you either end the story there or you let the new generation take over. Z started to do that with Gohan, Trunks, Goten and Pan, but in the end they decided to play it safe and go back to the character fans loved. GT took it even further, making Goku young again to try remake the magic from scratch or develop the next generation if it works out. But in the end, they just return to the status quo of making Goku stronger and everyone else sits on the sidelines. Super adds to the lore that was another component of the series, but continues the trend with GT. Goku gets even more stronger, and the scenarios he's put in are just an excuse to bring even stronger adversaries for him to fight. This is only remedied by the now canon movies. The Broly movie not only brought the character into canon, but made him into a much better character that you grow to like. It ends with him not being defeated, and Goku starts to train him in a way that works a little better than the end of Z. The recent Super Hero movie was not only a great way to bring Dragon Ball back to its comedic roots, but focuses entirely on the next generation. Goku and Vegeta are doing their own things off world, while Piccolo tries to get Gohan to continue training for a scenario like this. He evens willingly puts Pan (who is happy to train and help Piccolo) in the hands of the villains to push Gohan. While he and Pan have their moments, its ultimately up to Gohan to go above his limits and save the world from a similar but stronger adversary. I LOVED what the story did for him and Pan. It proved that Goku can be taken out of the spotlight, and not only can the next generation pick up the pieces but can go through the Hero's Journey their own unique ways. I have only high hopes that the series will continue refining itself and show it and other shonen series are more than just cool fights and characters, they are at the end of the day good storytelling.

I'm just going to say it. if you only see dragon super like I did you would not think nothing wrong with the series. you think it just an awesome fighting series of people kicking other people's butt and that's kind of how I saw it. it wasn't until later on that kind of realized. it was a lot more to it than just that so if you kind of see it in my eyes that's why I think dragon Ball super was more awesome. than the rest I still kind of have that emotional feeling from the beginning.
Honestly these past few years I've been seeing people give Dragon ball GT the credit it deserves as a good dragon ball story, it honestly makes me super happy to see
I have to agree with you 100% Axel. Great video. Hit me with a lot of soft spots myself. Tbh idc what anyone thinks I personally loved GT. I think when I was younger I didn’t only because I listened to other people’s opinions of it and after years of not watching it I re watched it again and fell in love. I loved the music and the adventure. I like it better than super that’s for sure. GT made sense because it was a continuation. I do wish it was canon but what can we do. Once again thank you for the great video as usual ❤

My point exactly about that kid in your other comment about super fan crazing it. Gt followed the timeline after z and kept good backgrounds and also featured others alot more rather than just Gohan being in Z from cell arc and part of buu saga. Super just focused on the power cravings of goku and the limits he can reach within each fight and didn't really have a motive on missions that comes across that turns into an adventure the way z and dragon ball did

GT I will always have my complaints about it, but like a friend said, I would rather watch GT then Super. Like yeah Super Saiyan God, SSB, UI and the whole multiverse thing is cool, but like I felt nothing for Super and even when we did get the Goku Black arc, even that fell apart after a certain moment. GT at least gave me Super Saiyan 4, which does feel like the natural evolution of a Saiyan, the Baby arc was fantastic and the Shadow Dragon arc while very much flawed, did give us some callbacks to OG Dragon Ball. To this day I still feel that the Cell arc was a great ending for the series in general........but then the Buu saga happened so I can't say that and we go back to Goku again. Nice job looking back on the GT special Axl!

Yeah A Hero's Legacy was good. This video's idea of Dragon Ball's themes also explains why I liked Goten so much as a kid. My mind naturally expected him to grow up strong and exceed Gohan and his dad, and he's probably the best representation of a kid acting like a kid in DBZ imo. Alas, that certainly didn't happen haha. An alternate universe where Gohan became the lead is interesting but a guy who prefers not to fight starring in an action shounen was not something Toriyama could make work haha.

It seems that Toriyama shouldn't be writing Dragonball Super, but a series that's more like this A Hero's Legacy from GT, or a better GT. Less powering up the legacy characters, and more passing the torch to newer generation.
Dragon Ball is good as long as it doesn't fight one boss in one combat that lasts dozens of episodes (weeks).
the italian DB community, holds Hero's Legacy even closer, as that was the last time it's iconic dub for Goku played the voice of the iconic warrior, before passing away
I’m one of the few defenders. I’ll take GT over Super any day.
Gt was better than super

I completely agree with you. For all its faults, I think GT was the continuation for DBZ we got and everyone should have just accepted it. I think the ending of GT served its purpose of being the intergalactic battle on a bombastic scale that DBZ was building up to. A Hero’s Tale was such a bittersweet, heartfelt, and in its own right a perfect bow on the series. I remember seeing it for the first time when I was just a child and feeling so emotionally attached to it. The way pan told Goku Jnr about the original Goku and his adventures is exactly how we would have told it to future generations. Returning the series to a more grounded version of dragon ball, one which returned to the original dragon ball with a nod to DBZ with an SSJ transformation was honestly perfect. I wish DB super had never happened and instead all of the dragon ball fandom would have ended their viewing with this movie. Bittersweet and grounded, with a hint of SSJ - it truly was special.

Okay, really, REALLY great video my guy, you just explained basically what was lost in dragon ball, why it didn't feel as amazing as its early years in OG and Z. But the downfall in Z was due to toriyama's fault. A lot of people don't know this, but he got tired of writing dragon ball after the cell saga, mainly because he didn't write it in his gaggy style like in his older Mangas (Arale and dragon boy) so he wrote the Buu saga to be as bad as possible so people could stop reading his work, but it backfired, because a lot of people really liked the Buu saga, so he was forced to finish it regardless. You could tell he got tired of the series, when he continued it, he simply wanted money, and that's it, which is good for him, but terrible for us.

@@OrangeStarHighSchool Super is soulless? How many hype moments in Super have outclassed GTs, cuz I can tell you, a fucking lot of them. Super may have its flaws, and believe me, it has A LOT of flaws, but it has some of the most memorable moments in all of Dragon Ball. The start of the Goku Black saga, the first glimpse of Ultra Instinct, Vegeta teaching Cabba Super Saiyan, Hit scenes as a whole. The story in Super is flawed in a lot of ways, but it managed to create so many hype moments that, at the very least, soften the blow of its own flaws. Want an example? Take Goku, Frieza and 17 Vs Jiren live watchings. Have you ever seen that much hype for a scene of an anime before? It shows that while Super isn't flawless, it still managed to entertain. Meanwhile, Since the first arc of GT, it was PAINFULLY BORING! You say that this arc is godlike? Bullshit, I wanted to gouge my eyes out with how bored I was. It only picked up during the Baby saga, when the story actually dove into something interesting and almost made it good. Then it drops to boring again with Super 17 and only get slightly better with the Shadow Dragons, but still boring. And then it has the audacity to make that beautiful ending, which only worked because of OG Dragon Ball and Z. GT didn't earn that ending.
