When God Talks Back | Tanya Luhrmann | TEDxStanford

Anthropologist Tanya Luhrmann’s research on the Evangelical relationship with God has lead to astonishing discoveries about those who say they hear God speak to them, literally. For some, this intimate relationship with God includes putting out an extra cup of coffee for Him. Luhrmann explores how rational, sensible people of faith experience the presence of an invisible being and sustain that belief in an environment of skepticism.
Tanya Marie Luhrmann is the Watkins University Professor in the Stanford Anthropology Department. Luhrmann's work focuses on the way that objects without material presence come to seem real to people, and the way that ideas about the mind affect mental experience. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003 and received a John Guggenheim Fellowship award in 2007. When God Talks Back was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year. It also was awarded the 2014 Grawemeyer Award for the best book in religion, from the University of Louisville and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

When my daughter was four Me and her mom got divorced and I had to drop her off every Sunday at 6pm. It tore my heart out to hear my daughter say “Daddy don’t go.” One nite I as I was walking I was telling God I can’t handle the pain It’s too much. A minute later I saw a guy in a wheelchair trying to cross a major blvd. Cars were speeding by. It was crazy. I ran out there and pushed him to safety. He thanked me in a barely audible voice and said he needs help. He said he has to use the bathroom. I pushed him 2-3 blocks to a supermarket. I pushed him to the bathroom in the back. He couldn’t use the bathroom by himself. I literally had to help him !! Afterwards I thought to myself Ok God, I can handle my little pain

A couple of years ago, I will never forget when I was in my kitchen and I heard "I am always here." and it was so soft and in my mind I thanked God for his presence. In that moment, I went to my room to pray, and I had this little devotional book, and I felt something telling me to read it front to back (mind you I never read this book til the end, only this time). This devotional book was about God's advice to humanity. And I began to cry, because the very last phrase of the book, that God wanted us to know was this: "And I want them to know that I am always here." The same phrase I heard in kitchen, on a book I never read til the end. God hears you, just believe!

After I became a believer, my family rejected me, I was estranged from my family for 10 years. And I lived alone in a town thousands of miles from my family. One period I was so sick it was very hard to do anything for myself. One evening in my sick state I needed to eat but was too tired to and I cast my mind back to how tenderly I would have been cared for had I been sick at home and it was more than I could bear. I broke down started sobbing and I kept saying God I need my mom. Till date I never forget. After sometime a gentle presence came into my room and began to gently pat my back till I fell asleep.

In discerning God's voice, distinguishing it from your own unconscious, you need to guard against three liars: Wishful Thinking, Fearful Thinking, and Habitual Thinking. You also need to test the fruits of such a voice. God's voice leads you to love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control--anything that leads you to hatred, misery, anxiety, impatience, cruelty, harmfulness or weakness doesn't come from God. Even when His voice leads you to repentance, there's a joy from being released from the exhaustion of trying to hold off admitting that you're not perfect. Even if God confronts you with an unhappy reality, such as the suffering of others, there's a sense of strengthening, of becoming empowered to deal with it.

I've been doing this for so long and it helps me so much whenever I need to calm myself down. Sometimes I would even imagine the heavens with God's throne in the middle and his divine council/angels around Him, singing Him songs of praise. And whenever I imagine God in those scenarios, His presence always feels much stronger ♥️🙏

It sounded like a man about 50 with a soft deep voice that echoed in the room. It was not my own voice. I was just turning 30. I thought I was going crazy as I looked around to the right and back toward the ceiling. This was about 10 days before the birth of my second son back in May 1999. God is so real. I appreciate that she is talking about a personal relationship with Christ.. because a lot of Christians in todays world don't understand, its not about going to church every week or how much you read your bible, although good.. it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that counts, with that your life will truly change. It is hard to discern Gods voice at first, but the more you read his word.. the easier it will be to tell what comes from him. For me he gives me thoughts and if I push them down.. they will keep coming back up, they weigh on my heart, that's how I know its him. I also believe he talks through people as well. Sometimes I am struggling with a certain thing, I will turn on one of my favorite preachers.. and they preach the exact message pertaining to that thing I'm struggling with.. its unbelievable. Its almost as if God is talking through them directly too me. Another thing is when you ask Jesus into your life, the Holy spirit enters you and dwells within you, along with giving you this unbelievable unconditional happiness, the Hold spirit gives you the immense power to discern right from wrong.. like its an instant knowledge that comes over you that I can not explain. Everything suddenly makes sense. You understand why everything is the way it is. I know Jesus is with me because when I call his name an instant warmth and peace washes over me so powerful it almost brings me to tears, I get goosebumps even thinking about it. Every human being deserves to experience this!

With just talking to myself? That is scientifically impossible. I could not have possibly had even the cravings and thoughts just erased from my mind according to science. Rehabs and therapists did nothing to help or benefit me, because no matter what techniques they showed me that I tried I continued to relapse. It was not until I cried out to Jesus Christ that I was truly fixed, even my thought process. I could not have possibly turned my life and mind around to that extent without the help of something way beyond my human strength. Explain to me how I was able to break the chain of addiction from a drug so powerful the success rate is almost non-existent without the help of a therapist, doctor or rehab, to the point where my brain was rewired so profoundly that I don't even think about the drug anymore, with just "my own thoughts"? Not only were the cravings and thoughts erased but also every single habitual pattern that was bad in my life such as stealing, lying, and using people were also erased in literally the blink of an eye? How could I have possibly done that in such a short span of time with just "my own thoughts"? How is that scientifically possible? If it was for my own strength I would be dead right now 100%. Please start explaining with science everything I just presented, because I would like to understand your logical answer as to how this could have happened with "my own thoughts". I am so utterly thankful I went through all I did because it is in my greatest weaknesses that God was able to reveal his mighty power for ALL to see. I am a living miracle, a miracle that science can not explain. A miracle that beat all the odds, statistics and probability though Gods mighty hand, leaving scientists baffled. My life puts science to shame and I will never stop preaching how when I was dangling between death and life, God pulled me right up for all to witness.

@James You are so correct. God shows his power through your weaknesses. I think about my own life. How low I was, how addicted I was, how awful I was as an individual. When I cried out to God.. he not only answered my prayers but was able to show his strength and power through my weaknesses so that all who knew who just how low I was may see the power of him. So that all who knew who I was then , and see's who I am today may look in "aww" at what has happened to my life and the transformation. I now know that I have a great purpose in life, and part of that purpose was to be an example of Gods great power through my very own life. when I was holding on to life by a string and I cried out to God.. he saw me and he lifted me up so high that the world could see what a miraculous turn around a human being could have. A turn around that defies science, that defies all odds, that defies logic and reasonability. A turn around that is so powerful and immense that it is considered humanly and statistically impossible. This was all part of Gods great plan for my life every bad thing I have ever been through was to show that God can turn it around and give you a life you never dreamed of having. People don't have to believe my words.. I have my life as living proof! God is so real and he is so alive. He can turn anybody's entire life around if they ask and are willing.

@@ANK2116 She said how we pay attention to our inner landscape, how we pay attention to our mind, shapes what we experience. Apparently you condensed this down to figment of the imagination. I agree with her that how we pay attention shapes what comes out of those experiences. One way how we pay attention is In the context of God or no God, it boils down for me to a disagreement on the nature of consciousness. Some claim that Consciousness is created by the brain which disappears at death. Others claim that Consciousness (aka spirit) preexists the body, entering in the body at some point during conception and at death separates from the body. My perspective is the latter, because of 'figments of my imagination' as you put it. A big part of this, something she didn't mention, is if we go into this with the mindset of asking questions and looking for answers from those figments they come and when they come they fit in with reality and are answered. When we take the atheistic approach and view there's nothing to this God thing, it's ignored. I ask questions, get answers to current things going on in my life and I get answers that are very useful. This quandary is only answered on an individual level, for those who're willing to ask questions and allow for the answers to come where ever they come. Then decided for their-self. In my view this Ted Talk can open the door for people taking a chance and asking for themselves. It's all theory until you seek your own experience. Then decide. An important part of getting a legitimate experience is to momentarily set aside skepticism. The Subconscious acts as a screen that creates what we experience of reality and when something is excluded, the Subconscious excludes it. (Watch Brain Games if you'd like to learn more, They say Brain I say Subconscious).

I tried my hardest to show love into the world but it seemed like everyone was depressed. I was in a mental health hospital and the Bible was my savior. God was my savior. Two other books were my savior. They led me a stronger relationship to God's. These books were 9 words how to create the best version of yourself and another book called how to make your brain great again. I was looking in the clouds and I saw things. I saw God telling me to relax. It was such a vivid picture of someone laying down. I knew it was him only because it defined what I should've been doing as oppose to having racing thoughts. People might say I was seeing things but I believe through my Christian background God saved me through visions 🙏

Over 40 years ago, I had a NDE, which also was an OBE (out of body experience). During my NDE, I spoke to no one verbally, and no one spoke to me in the verbal sense. But somehow, someway, I had a "knowing" about what I was experiencing. I had a feeling of being accepted and a very profound experience of being loved. It was like I knew I was accepted, and I was loved. This love is different than the kind of love we experience in our Earthly lives. It felt as if my entire spirit was permeated with this unconditional love. This is all encompassing love. I also knew I was in the presence of the Source, the Divine, the universal consciousness, God, or whatever someone chooses to call this. The last thing I experienced was the "Oneness". Sort of like the oneness of the universe, or the oneness of everything. Somehow, someway, everything is one. I now realize that the unconditional love I was sensing was coming from everyone who is at this place. I call this place Paradise. It doesn't seem physical, but is very Earth like in many ways. Probably because we will feel more comfortable in an Earth like setting. It felt like I was living a perfect existence when I was there. I was experiencing a happiness and joy that I didn't even know existed. I went back into my body right after this, and I'm still here to relate my experience. No, there were no words exchanged during my NDE, but I have learned so much over the past 40 years, when it comes to the meaning of my experience.

I once compared it to being like my own thoughts, but more more quite, distinct, and set apart. When I say intense times of prayer what I mean is that these intense moments were followed up by quieting myself completely and opening myself up. Exactly what I've done in current meditation and had thoughts occur that seemed not of my own, yet were.

One early morning a few years ago I was in bed not quite as sleep as it was about time to get up but not fully awake either I got what I believe was a message or a vision from God. It was a story a concept and it wasn't something that played out chronologically for me to watch and experience it just all flooded into my mind in an instant and I understood. I never really thought it was a dream because it felt different and even to this day I can recite and remember it in great detail. The vision was this. A young girl maybe 12 is at school and her teacher assigns the class a project, they are take Popsicle sticks and build their vision of the ideal home. The teacher told them that they are to do their very best on this project because that home would represent their righteousness. So this girl goes home and she makes the best looking model of home that she can imagine. It is a beautiful home with a white picket fence, she has painted it and there is a family made out of sticks in the front yard. It is good and she is proud of it. She takes it to school and she places it on the table with the other models. Some are good and some are very bad you could tell not much effort went into them. She realizes hers is the best and she feels very good about herself, she is sure she will receive a good grade. But something different is happening on this day in class because God himself has shown up and He has also made a model and it is so magnificent that it cannot fit within the school it is in the field behind the school so they go out to see. What the girl witnesses is the most spectacular castle she has ever seen. It is amazing with gardens and the flowers in those gardens have flowers carved from the Popsicle sticks and on those flowers are lady bugs and beautiful butterflies that look stunningly real. As she walks up to the castle she can see in the windows and there are magnificent furnishings and paintings throughout the castle and it is just as beautiful inside as it is outside. Behind the castle she sees a hill with trees ablaze with color and a meadow full of flowers in the middle of that meadow she sees God himself glowing with the most wonderful light and He is smiling at her. She then thinks about her model and how compared to this it is nothing. She has failed her righteousness is pitiful. At that moment she feels a hand on her shoulder she turns to see Jesus and He is holding a model every bit as spectacular as God's and He holds it out to her and He says here take mine.

As an 11-year-old, I was taking a nap on my grandma's couch. My mom had just given birth a day or so earlier and she had put my baby sister fairly close to me on the couch to take a nap as well. Suddenly, I heard a voice tell me to wake up. I wanted to ignore it but it felt so extremely urgent. I felt the voice tell me to open up my eyes "right now". I opened my eyes and focused on my baby sister laying next to me, completely still. I watched her breathing very closely for about 8 seconds, looking for any changes. Then she stopped breathing completely. She did not make a single sound. I went to my mother immediately to tell her that my sister had stopped breathing - she ran back into the living room, picked her up, and hit her back for about 15 seconds until she finally began to breathe again. Had I not listened to that voice, my little sister would not be alive today. I am almost 21 years old today and I will never forget that moment.

We all are looking to make ourselves believe about the existence of True God! I have felt him talking to me in a book named Quran. And I have witnessed the mention of the God of Old testament and the God of Bible in it. I read it without being prejudiced and I recommend everyone to give it a try. Peace

We often don't get an elaborate study of the inner dynamics of the God - Man relationship. When you hear a preacher say " God IS love", many outside the circle think it a figurative or metaphoric meaning when it is actually mean't literally. Then conclusion says " well i think i know and understand a thing or two about love but i don't quiet understand how God IS love ". The premise demands a total rethink and meditation on our understanding of love. For if God IS love then the moments of your past when we experience real love between people is actually God impressing himself into peoples lives but we don't acknowledge it as his handy work and often claim it as a facet of our own.. The nature of real love can be learned. 1 Corinthians 13 outlines what love is and it's nature. When we become sensitive and aware of these characteristics active in our lives we are privy to seeing God at work. most people and many Christians never quiet grasp this core fundamental so they continue with an exterior imitation of who they think God wants them to be and do. IN SHORT - everything is happening as God has commanded. 1) We left Eden and lost that intimate relationship 2) The 10 commandments is God reestablishing his order for humans, knowing we couldn't fulfill these requirements. " then why bother " i hear you say. To prove to ourselves we are lost without his intimacy. 3) Jesus dies for all sin for everyday you will ever live. Why ? the son being pure and holy, without sin stepped in the gap and purchased your sin debt, what kind of a merciful heart is that ( rather than the angry judgmental God everybody has no problems believing ). For you will no longer be judged on the issues of sin, it is done away with. In it's place you have a new dynamic with God, a relationship based on your response to his love. The beginning and the end is at the foot of the cross, not in self judgement which always leads to self condemnation which actually angers God, for it reduces Christ sacrifice to no effect. We are to walk each day in the full knowledge of God's desire to forgive us forever and restore that intimate walk for this is what LOVE desires. The whole story of the christian story is nothing but God demonstrating his love and standing on the promises he has made with us. And love is most glorious when it shines on a dark broken suffering world.

Both the spirits of Our Elohim and the deceiver can be an intuition to our mind, even so we may believe it is the voice of god. Through discipline and discernment we must sort through every thought and discard all that are unrighteous or foolishness

Why Americans believe in angels? We are supposed to pray to the Father, the Son and the Holly Spirit. Angels are simply messengers who acted as intermediate between us and God before Jesus vame to us. The Holly Spirit can talk to you for your day to day spiritual needs, who are these angels you are talking about ?

I'm getting the impression she is trying to say " it's your imagination" But I have heard God's voice, and I have seen visions. My imagination had nothing to do with it. I left my church, and stopped communicating with God..and guess what, I no longer hear, or see God. And it seems no matter what, I can't hear him. Yet, I know he is there. I need to open up my heart, because that is where he dwells, and how he talks to us..through the heart..not the imagination. Sorry to differ but I know this.

John 14:7. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. Ask God directly if Jesus Christ really is the Truth, Way and light. Jesus Christ is real. Go and check Dr Rodonaia's experience or Ian Mc Cormacks' experience. Both where atheists.....until God gave them a second chance after they died and came back. This is how God is merciful. He is the God of second chances. Actually gives us a gazillion chances. But then, we reap what we sow.

These pillerless skies, these floating and rotating planets, these fragrent flowers, the living and dying humans, the voices inside ,the emotions and your presence are calling us to believe in the existence of a Merciful Supreme Creator of all that is in the earth, byound the skies and in between them.

My take is that we have access to God/Essence/Source because we are part of that whole. This Source lies within us and its access is not beholden to one religious expression or the other. It is a marvelous space of wisdom and peace, beyond ego, which can inform and guide us if we can tap into it. The future of the human race may well depend on whether humans can evolve to the point of residing in and living from this space. This will not happen if we are afraid of reaching for it or are so wrapped up in our "reasoned" living. Do not presume that you know everything about the human condition...go explore your deeper consciousness. You will be amazed at what you find there.

"While we sit in a circle and suppose, the secret sits in the center and knows" R. Frost. It is the heart that speaks to and hears , it is love which transcends language, it is personal and carries on before the mind is aware to notice. Adam and Eve is a love story, ask God. Ask your heart to reveal, what you already know. God bless you. Amen

As i understood it.. this talk is about understanding and explaining the illusion that is experienced once under conviction of spiritual practice and less a discussion about the wonders god can do in your life as the comments seem to suggest. In my opinion she gives evidence to support Gods "voice" being an illusion and one that is worked on and strengthened over time.

The thing she is calling "the voice of God" is basically synonymous to own's "deeper intuition" or "higher-self". She is right that this voice can be cultivated through mental training such as meditation, positive affirmations, prayer, etc.

Totally, which is why it would would be way more accurate to just call "It" the voice of the "Higher Self" or "Self-Awareness" or "Self-Actualization" instead of carrying on that the voice is that of the Christian "Sky-Daddy" and sometimes the voice is accompanied by "The brief glimpse of an Angel Wing"....I mean, my higher self is a gaggle of highly evolved Mantoid Alien Beings who abduct me and plug my brain into a machine that upgrades my DNA, but I can't seem to get my newly started Religion, which pays reverence to my Mantodea Lords, off the ground. Maybe it would help if I had 2000 years of cultural reinforcement to help propagate my Lunatic-Claims....
