When Garmin Combined a GPS with a PDA: The iQue 3600

Ғылым және технология

Today our phones can guide us to almost any place on Earth. But years before Apple and Google became synonymous with mapping there was another device blazing the trail. Featuring dynamic turn-by-turn directions, the Garmin iQue 3600 drew the map that our smartphones follwed by embedding a GPS into a Palm OS PDA. How did it stack up against its GPS and personal digital assistant competitors in 2003? Can I still get accurate directions from a vintage device released two decades ago? And is it possible to bring it up to date with modern maps? Watch to see me put this retro PDA GPS the test on today's streets.

the serotonin that shoots into my cerebrum every time a charismatic computer content creator cleanly conveys comedic alliteration in their videos is better than any drug i could dare to dream of

Thanks for the great video! I love seeing all the features of this quirky PDA. I took fiddled with a Palm V GPS adapter back in the day, it's no wonder we didn't feel like it was "working" with all of it's trade offs. I kind of miss this era of electronics. Sure, a lot of the features worked "just enough" and battery life always suffered... but there was the excitement of cutting edge features and advanced functionality.

I had a “GPS sled” for my Palm V back in 2000. You had to load maps via hotsync from your computer, and the Palm V barely had enough storage to fit a mid-size city. I had to load only either the East side of town or the West side of town, depending on where I thought I’d go.

I was so glad to hear you talk about how exciting this would have been at the time, because hell yes, I would have lost my mind over this in 2003 if I had known it existed. And you uploading recent data to your Garmin also just reminde me of when I found out these things existed, when my father casually said something to me in like 2005? about how he needed help updating his car GPS, and I was like "wait are those good now?"

I really wanted one of these back in the day, but instead I got a Dell PDA with Windows Mobile and saved up for a Compact Flash GPS Card and map software. After seeing this demo, I made the wrong choice. PalmOS was definitely so much better than the Windows Mobile experience of 2003.

Very cool. I too would have loved one of those back in the day! I have an early 2006 Accord that came with built-in navigation that was built in October 2005. When I got it, it was absolutely "futuristic". Considering the Hondas get the hand-me-downs from Acuras, its navigation components are likely from the same era as this or very close to it. Over 18 years later, I still use the built-in navigation, though I haven't purchased a map DVD in a while, and now the car's clock is an hour off. There is a fix for that, but it involves disconnecting the car's battery at a specific time, and I just haven't felt like fooling with it yet.

I can’t imagine how amazing that would have been back then. I had a gps capable pda around 2006, but it was terrible.

Damn, that would be so good back in the day! Battery life being short on GPS is ok if all you do is have it teathered in your car. Great video, thanks!
