The first ever football match did not take place between the Old Etonians and Darwen FC, it did not take place around the formation The FA (the oldest football association in the world), it did not even take place with a game of Cuju in ancient China.
It dates back even further, and took place in Mesoamerica.
As David Goldblatt explains. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

I’m gonna guess the TIfo lads felt inspired to make this after reading about it in David Graeber and David Wengrow’s new book “The Dawn of Everything.” Maybe not, but I’l gonna tell myself that anyways.

what are those rings in the court for? Seems like they're there so that the ball goes through at some point

As the video said, there variations of the game. In some you win if your opponent failed to keep the ball from touching de ground. In others, you score points if the ball go through the ring your opponent was defending. And in others, the first to pass the ball through the ring wins. There is no "official rules" because most of the cultural aspects of the game were lost during the conquest and colony.

@@JorgeRamirez-qj2rl I missed that part, thanks! Wish we could know exactly how they played, how often, how important it was, etc, but clearly it was a big deal back then, I'm guessing even more than football nowadays

I imagine most Ancient games would have been boring af considering the players would often be killed if they lost. Players must have been very tense and you can't play anything at a high level if you are tense or stressed. Players probably never got the chance to be very good.
