When F1 Used Exhausts to Make Cars FASTER

In 2010, F1 teams figured out a way to use the exhaust gases to make their cars FASTER.
And as a welcome by-product, it made them sound AWESOME! /LIKE THIS
But how did moving the exhaust position gain them so much performance? And why were drivers completing ENTIRE laps at full throttle.
Lets get into it!
Following the 2010 season the controversial double diffuser was banned.
This left the teams with a rear downforce deficit and a problem to solve over the winter. Little did they know that one team had already found a solution.
They had moved their exhaust outlets to create better airflow around the diffuser.
This was not a new solution, F1 had used it in the 80s and 90s, but what this team did was make it WAY WAY BETTER.
Soon everyone would have to follow them, or be left behind.
But how did it work?
The foundation of an Formula 1 car’s speed is from downforce. This effect happens when air flows through the car very quickly. The car affects the air going over it in such a way that it creates an area of higher pressure above than the air flowing underneath the car.
This difference in pressure creates a suction effect - this is downforce.
If the car is driving quicker, the air flows over it quicker and you get even more downforce. This is what F1 engineers are always trying to do.

That is correct, the teams used the Coandă effect with the exhaust gases following the contours of the body work to either energize the rear diffuser flow or increase the flow differential of the rear wing and the Y250 mid-plane wing as well.

@@Unamatrix01 When the exhaust vented rearward in 2014 they directed it at the 'monkey seat' so it would vent upward under the bottom rear wing. It's funny that Minardi first developed this idea in the mid-90s.

The reason ferrari introduced periscopic exhaust pipes in 1998 was not to create downforce, it was purely a thermal problem with the materials at the time. Later it was found to bring some nice benefits and got widely adopted by other teams, though. Blown diffusers had been a thing for decades (albeit in a different manner than the 2011 version), but with the massive rev range in the late 90s, teams started to move the exhaust a bit away from the diffuser because it was making it too sensitive to throttle response. So that was another reason why the periscopic pipes eventually took over.

Whilst true that he was using the blown diffuser back then (and also in the williams days), the Mclaren actually sounded so different because of it's beryllium pistons, which where very light weight, meaning a longer stroke could be had, providing more torque. Ross Brawn was very impressed with this and couldn't work it out in the beginning. Brilliant engineering.

Fun fact: the upward-swept "zoomie" headers on Top Fuel dragsters actually function like rocket engines. At wide open throttle, those 500-cubic inch (8.2L) supercharged V8s spin up to 8,500rpm, cramming air into the cylinders at 65psi above atmospheric pressure (which is insanely high even for a modern ball-bearing turbocharger spinning at well over 200,000rpm, let alone a belt-driven Roots blower), along with 1.5 gallons of 90/10 nitromethane/methanol blend fuel per second. These engines see mean effective pressures up to 1,450psi and power figures in the neighborhood of 11,000hp. The sheer amount of reactionary mass being blasted upward and slightly rearward out of the exhaust pipes is capable of producing almost 1,200lbf of thrust, mostly directed downward to squash those massive ultra-soft drag slicks into the pavement.

I'm not going to get into an argument about it but it is absolutely about the car being "sucked" down, not being "pushed" down that creates downforce. Basically F1 cars use the principles that enable planes to fly in reverse. Intuitively it would seem they are being pushed down but they are actually being "sucked" to the ground. This is the way these principles described work, otherwise pushing air flow at the bottom of the rear would create the opposite effect of "pushing" the car upward and, thus, decreasing downforce

  • @Arsenic71

    @Arsenic71

@@batman9823 Physically speaking there is no suction force. There is a pressure differential and the high pressure area pushes towards the low-pressure side. How much flow pressure/velocity was needed to be beneficial? Ignoring weight penalties so for conceptual sake only, could you rig a system that charges during braking or even tap off the exhaust to charge it and can be activated that releases air either through spring charged compressor to fill a mini tank of air or just spin a turbine/blade to send flow where it needs to be?

If we're talking about aerodynamic advantages from the past 30-40 years, you'll find A LOT of them come from Newey/Red Bull. Also, BIG AGREE on that raspy sound. Hah, literally just changed the thumbnail.

Your description of the pressure difference above and below the car (commonly referred to as longer path theory) is a common misconception people often associate with how planes fly as well. Ignoring the chassis for a moment, the front and rear wing of the car are airfoils (wings on a plane are also airfoils, but in the case they are being used for downforce rather than lift). The assumption you're using assumes that two air particles from the atmosphere separate at the leading edge of the airfoil and then join up at the tailing end. Since one air particle has a longer path, it must have higher velocity, and thus a lower pressure. We cannot assume that the air particles will meet up again at the tail end of the airfoil, as this is not a realistic assumption. Also if this were true, symmetrical airfoils would not produce any lift. Downforce (and lift) is generated from redirecting or turning the airflow. In the case of the F1 car, the air hits the leading edge of the airfoil and is directed upwards as it moves along. The airfoil exerts an upwards force on the air and the air exerts an equal and opposite downwards force on the airfoil. The product of this interaction is downforce. I apologize if I am coming across as condescending to anyone, but I am just seeking to provide more accurate information to people

Believe in JESUS today, confess and repent of your sins. No one goes to heaven for doing good but by believing in JESUS who died for our sins. “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. ”(Romans 10:9-10)❤️

The double diffuser was banned in 2011, not 2010. Hence why the 2010 RB6 has SO MUCH DOWNFORCE because it has a blown diffuser and a double diffuser

You all forgetting one more thing about the down force. I'ts not just the pressure that does the effect, it's also the mass of air that is accelerated upwards.

Man, I want a very nearly open-class F1. No MGU-H, and no primary downforce fan cars. Other than that give them size constraints, safety standards, and maybe a budget limit, a combined HP limit of like 1000KW or 1500HP, and let them have at it. 6-wheel, 8-wheel, AWD, Turbo, N/A, ground effects, super DRS, closed cockpits, closed-wheel or open-wheel, IDGAF. Also, derestrict track certifications so they can have straights longer than 2km, I wanna see some 240-280MPH speed demons!
