To be fair, he didn't have anything positive to hide behind in the first place. When youre commenting on a team that has finished the Prem season with a record low 11 points, having only won a single game, there isnt a way even for the most opaque managers to put a positive spin on the situation.

@@ryanmorgan5507 Agreed. I'm sick of people comparing a "big" club finishing mid-table to this. Whilst that's not good at all, it is still nothing compared to this situation where a team only won a single game and other than that didn't have any other positive that season

In the Tifo video on Derby, Davies was asked how it felt being a Premier League manager shortly after winning the playoff final, and Davies had an out-of-body moment. According to Tifo, Davies clarified that behind the scenes, Derby was up for sale, and he wasn't sure if the new owners and management would keep him on board or go with someone else.

I’m a West Brom fan and I said the same when we got promoted last season. Before the lockdown we were smashing it, when football came back we were shocking. We were so lucky to finish 2nd in the end, only due to a massive shock because of Barnsley beating Brentford. Had Brentford won, and we went to the play offs instead, there’s no chance we would’ve came up.

Those players can be forgiven in my opinion, they had heart up until about Feb but theyd become so demorilised by the end they couldnt wait for the season to finish from around late Feb. You can have heart but if your so limited skill wise its not going to be good enough. You need 1 or 2 roll your sleever carthorses in your team but that whole squad was carthorses,, there was not one player who had any real technical ability (Savage closest but he was 32-33 and wasnt even that but compared to the rest in that midfield he looked like Pirlo ffs), it was a squad youd have doubts about in league 1 never mind the championship,, the premiership? They shouldnt have been anywhere near it.. We had Leacock in that defence as well and Fulham fans were miffed how hed got into a prem squad much less the heart of its defence 🤪.

A lot of rotation and loan players. Hence no consistency. Picture: Roy Caroll, Laurent Robert, Carl Fagan, Dean Moxey, Robbie Savage, Danny Mills, Dean Leacock, Kenny Miller (don't laugh), Jay Maceverly, John Mackem (? - the ex Man City 6'er) - that's about a third of the squad and a mish mash of Davies' and Jewell's players - his players often having bona fide Prem experience but were signed expensively in blind panic and the capacity crowd every week haven't even got the joy of youngsters being brought from the Reserves or through the academy. Davies had broken the transfer record to buy Robert Earnshaw then inexplicably leaves him on the bench most games. Jewell signs Savage who - at that time possibly all Derby fans detested until he won them round the following season - he then decides to play him in a position not suited to anyone over the age of 27 unless they're truly world class, throws a tantrum and confounds supporters and club directors by trying to sending him on loan to the Middle East for the rest of his contract. How Billy Davies or Paul Jewell even found their own way out of the house and down the street without a carer - let alone hold a job down at a club Derby's size - I DO NOT KNOW!😫 So basically starting 11 probably not a good description. If I remember any more standout names I'll get back to you.

@@craigsimpson3901 Me also! I don't know if you can find it online but its worth tracking down the interview Robbie does with local radio where he totally loses his rag after a bad performance in one of the following seasons - he had managed to rehabilitate himself with Derby supporters when he played under Nigel Clough but he suffers from this obsession that some players/ex-players where they think their opinion is sacrosanct and people who pay through the turnstiles each season somehow don't understand the game they're watching! It was Colin Gibson vs Robbie Savage anyway c. 2010 or so, it's a legendary clip. I also ought to mention as an addendum for the relegation season in your query, players who were largely exempt from the worst criticism and abuse (mainly because of being too old or out of their depth in the top flight: Steve Howard who is still remembered fairly well - along with Darren Moore - and was a regular under Billy Davis and was great in the lower divisions but looked totally surplus in the Premier; Tyrone Mears - tipped for England briefly went to Marseille I seem to remember.) I do seem to remember Peschisolido, Edworthy and Eustace had probably gone and those last two were young enough to have decent careers after.👍
