Just go in there feeling confident and that you and belong before long you will have guys that you consider friends and colleagues and a sense of brotherhood. It's never too late to start or restart a martial art. I started judo when I was 12 but had to stop when I entered college at age 18. At 21 I started aikido when I was studying in Japan but had to stop after 1 year when I got went back to Brazil. At age 48 I got back to aikido and after I realized I was quite fit and decided to get back to judo. Last year I started karate at age 49. This year I hope to get my black belt in judo in a competition in September and use the points I got when I finished in 3rd in a competition in May. I will also get my black belt in aikido. OSS

Many of your videos are subjects that ive read about to im relly glad someone whit the skills to comunicate it to the pubic like you exist, I also tried judo when i was 27 but i didnt felt welcome att the club it felt just like you said that the teacher just felt anoyed by my presence and was just interested in the younger students, even though i had trained in traditional Jujutsu and werent a stranger to many of the techniques, becuse of that it has ceept me away from starting to train judo seriusly but now after getting my green belt in Jujutsu i have decided to start again. Your videos have really inspired me and im very gratefull for that.

Hey Chadi! I did Sambo for about 2years when I was 15y old, so I had some previous experience and maybe better starting position. I started judo after I took my 4yrs son to Judo class. And now after 7 years of training, my son became national champion at age of 11 and I got my black belt at age of 41. I'm happy for both of us, because judo is fantastic if not ideal sport for youngsters and older. I learn a lot and still need to learn even more. I have to say, that we got extremely lucky, because ours coach is world class, and kids he train can't have better role model. Keep up great work, I love your videos.

Great video as always! I'm 43 and still practicing Judo (and wrestling) but for bjj (though the pandemic halted that for now) so I don't follow the current rule set. I did competitive judo in college but stopped because I got shoulder surgery. But since picking up bjj in my late 30s, it was only natural that I revisited my base grappling arts. Videos like this motivate me even more. Can't wait for this pandemic to end so I can get back on the mats with all them young players. Cheers, Chadi.

Chadi, I love your channel, and this video really hits home for me. I competed in Judo when I was younger and stopped once I finished university. I never intended to start again due to work and family commitments. This past summer I started working with a gentleman who got his shodan in korea. For PT, we started doing Judo at least 3 times per week. Fast forward to now, I made the podium at a provincial tournament, started coaching at the judo club in my town, and am working towards starting sanctioning our work club. If anyone is thinking of starting or restarting judo, just give it a shot.

Hey Chadi, this is a cerebral and deep analysis of practicing Judo at a later stage in life. Well done! I was fortunate enough to be sent by my parents to a dojo at the age of 12 to learn how to 'defend' myself. Getting my black belt was like climbing the mount Olympus at the beginning and an anti-climax after it. I learned that one cannot rest on one's laurels. The competition is so fierce and emotionally draining that it is difficult to keep up a constant pace. A little distraction In the end all that matters (to me) is to become a bit better (than myself) each day. Having said that I have kept the level of fitness and stamina to this day. Judo taught me fairness and resilience in life for which I'm thankful. Take care.

Nice vid as usual...here in my country is kind of dificult to find a Judo school who have adults only classes. Most clubs here are for kids and teenagers, and even though the welcome adults, you barely see any. Same is happening to Karate but to a lesser degree. Most adults who want to do martial arts are in Kickboxing, BJJ or Self Defense systems like Krav Maga. You are right that when you get older, you don't need to be in the mat too much as there's plenty other things to focus on your martial arts. I'm Karateka in my late 40's so lately i've been focusing a lot in academic studies, history, studying tactics, styles, philosophy, etc. my studies are more than just Karate i try research in all history related channels, that's why i always come here to learn more about Judo. You have the Best Judo channel i've seen and it was very needed to show people Judo can be more than just a sport. :) Thanks for your work.

When I started Judo, it's cos I was depressed and was willing to give my being to just about anything that could push me, motivate me I guess. Thanks for the video. It's really helpful and important to talk about those things. Just wanna share some parts of my story with you. I did some greco-roman wrestling for almost 3 years when in high school and partially at the university in Ukraine. I really enjoyed the trainings in my small town near Luhansk. It wasn't a big club or something, just a coach and a few people including me. Yet because of this it just felt like a small family. We didn't pay for anything except for the room rental there; one of the guys bought mats and equipment to kinda develop the sport in our town. I still remember those times as really good despite the hardships I had (I failed to enter university from the first try, then the war started in 2014). From the second try, I entered university in Odesa leaving my region on the bus with my mom and hearing the reactive artillery shelling somewhere near in July of 2014. I guess that's really influenced me and broke me in a way. Yet since I joined the university I started searching for the wrestling opportunities. I didn't find any straightaway but there was a judo section in my uni. So, I started going there, and because it was during the August, there were only 3 guys: me and 2 guys 100+. It was weird for me to train with them as I didn't know what to do and they were really big and strong for me. Then the studying year started: I missed home and my town section of greco-roman, as my family was poor, and because we didn't have any money of that I could barely afford taking a bus to the training facility and lost 7 kg, I'm not even saying about affording judoga or other equipment. And, of course, I didn't feel any progress in judo due to this "competition approach." The coach there wanted the "cool" guys to go to competitions win, and he was helping them but I learned nothing. All that combined made me quit judo. After that I started hustling, searching for cheaper options and stuff. I found a greco-roman wrestling section in Odesa. It was a bit closer, so I needed just a 40-45 min walk to go there (one way) as I still didn't have any money. So, I was going there 4 days a week: 40 min walk there, training for almost 2 hours, going back 40 min. Despite it was complicated, I also enjoyed that time even though coaches also weren't that involved into developing me and my skills. At least each training reminded me about great cozy times in my hometown greco-roman :) I participated in a few competitions, even went to nationals once but was eliminated in the first round. Though I do not regret it. I had to quit after a year to start working in order to be able to study and pay for the dormitory and other things but also because had some issues with my back. I worked different works after that but always wanted to kinda go back. Prior to the full-scale war start in Ukraine in 2022, I went for a work trip to Warsaw and still here (May 2023). I decided that I wanna try judo again to experience the mentality and different approach to throws, and last week went to a judo club. I'm not really good (not surprising after 1 training) at judo but the wrestling base helps a lot (both mentally and physically), and a few guys who were too slow with their throws experienced suplexes from me :) The point is: it's never too late to try something.

No need to go crazy but Judo is a smoker. Get conditioned. Take learning break falls seriously. Keep it fun. You will throw and be thrown. That's fine.

Thank you for your videos it's all interesting. I'm starting judo now at 31, but I started Bjj at 22, so I am already very good in the ground. But for the stand up... Those throws are so technical, it's not easy to learn and I think not easy to master too. I don't think it's too late to train, you will always learn something, and have new challenge in your life. But for me if you start late I don't recommand bjj over judo, yes there are masters divisions but the atmosphere in the bjj club is totally different, a lot of ego and toxicity at least in Paris. I clearly prefer the judo atmosphere in general, which I find more mature and respectful, so I think with logic an old beginner will be more comfortable in, but it depend of many parameter like your preference in the ground, your coach and academy etc.. After all its just my 2cts. But go train, it is good for the body and great for the mind!

Martial Arts in my humble opinion is interdisciplinary as well as lean. Some grasp it by cross-comparing their brush flow to a leg-lock or integration of resource (energy) management in a duel. While others do so by accepting Judo as a Mathematics of its' own, with different laws and logic.

Hey Chadi, that's a great video thank you, and a great channel. I did Judo in the 80's, for 6 years, up to the blue belt, (then again 1 year in my 20s) then I stopped, I didn't like the club, and there was no other club in the area where I grew up. The coach was obsessed with competition, and to be honest, there was a lot of humiliation involved, I was kind of heavy and I ended up fighting guys that were 2, 3, 4 years older than me, with little results. I loved, kata, atemi waza, the old techniques, I had found a couple of books, that kind of stuff, and there was no place for it in the club. Anyways, I'm thinking about starting again, I'm in France, and here it seems to me that Judo is very much sport-oriented, so I'm looking for a good club basically. Oh, and I didn't know that Bourdain (MHSRINP, yes) did competition in his 60s, amazing, I found videos online, thanks for pointing that out.

I'm hoping by the 1 month mark my body will get used to it. Wing Chun maybe a lot more technical and harder to grasp, but Judo is sooo much harder on the body.

Chadi I have listened to some of the videos in your chanel about the history of judo and bjj. I think to be you should interview Pedro Valente Hélio Gracie's last black belt. He offers a lot of interesting counter points to a lot of the "unveiled" truth. His main point being that people are countering things that were never said or unveling things that were never really hidden, and interpreting certain true facts in a biased way, he also interestingly thinks that the Gracies and Jigoro Kano had a lot in common. He has given good interviews in portuguese. But he lives in America and I am sure he would like to give his side of the story to you. I believe that would be fair.

Age matters a lot... Huizinga didn't start Judo in his 30s, or even in his 20s, he was winning gold medals at 24. The only unusual thing there is how he was able to stay competitive at a high level for so long, but he was learning Judo in his teens. It's one thing to get good when you're young, and then stay good until a later age. It's something else altogether to get good when you're not young. Judo fucking hurts learning it as an adult, your knees and back are stiff, you're sore for days after a bad breakfall or trying to throw someone with a bad grip while kids shrug that stuff off, even recently someone fell on me during randori with their knee right into my quad and I was out for a week, you don't have the flexibility to get into the best positions - when I first started practicing the drills for uchi mata and osoto gari I couldn't walk properly for days, my hip was so sore. If you prepare your body for Judo when you're young it's much easier to then mantain that physical preparedness as you get older as long as you do it somewhat frequently.

It ultimately depends what you enjoy most and what your body can take. If you love throwing people to the ground then Judo is for you; if you like grappling on the ground and submit people then youll love BJJ. Age of 59 is pretty old by any standard(e.g., 30 is considered pretty old to start in Judo) so be mindful of what your body can handle. Judo is faster pace than BJJ whereas BJJ is slower which is an advantage for those who are old. Ground grappling with the gi slows things down alot while in Judo it can quickly go from defense to offence. Moreover, taking falls, even doing them correctly, puts strain to your body. I can't do Judo anymore since I suffer from concussions easily due to repeated falls. A couple of Judo senseis I know can't do randori anymore since their bodies are broken.

BJJ just seems to care more about the older folks, and about the hobbyists. Which might be why BJJ schools and MMA gyms are very successful. Most people over 30 who aren't already black belts or pro fighters, are pretty much only ever going to be hobbyists. People in that category always felt comfortable in less effective TMAs, but BJJ and (to a lesser extent) MMA don't exclude those people, though older MMA hobbyists probably won't compete in anything other than submission grappling.
