Well, I was 19 or twenty, working as a waiter in la Ferme Saint Simeon in Honfleur, not far from Cannes. Mr Nielson was obviously in France to attend the festival and he and his party were staying on late into the night, so I was staying too. For some reason Mr Nielson was sporting a beard so at one point I said 'It's a nice try sir, but you're a star of international renown and even with a beard you're going to be instantly recognized.' He was visibly touched by the sincere flattery of a fan and said 'Why thank you very much' to which I replied 'That's quite all right, Mr Connery'. I think he wasn't expecting that and as I walked away he and his entire table burst out laughing, and my boss who hadn't heard the exchange but only seen the reaction got very very annoyed with me. @@ghaleon128

I am now concerned I have rather raised expectations far too high. It wasn't really such a good joke, more of a situational thing. ​@@oldnotweak It's actually kind of weird, because while Exorcist II was a sequel to the first movie, neither William Peter Blatty (who wrote the book) or William Friedkin (who directed the first film) were involved and the movie was pretty terrible. Some years later William Peter Blatty wrote Legion, which was a sequel to the first book and later adapted (by Blatty himself) into a movie, The Exorcist III, which was actually quite good. Both the book and the movie completely ignore Exorcist II, which means that there are essentially two completely different sequels to the first film. Well, there were until last year, when The Exorcist: Believer was released. That is also a sequel to the first film, which ignores the other films in the series and wil get two sequels. Oh, and there were also two different prequels made in the mid 2000s. That's messy, but I guess it's still better than the Halloween series, which has 3 different films called Halloween. One is the original from 1978, one is a remake from 2007 and the third one is a sequel to the first film from 2018 (by the same director who made the new Exorcist sequel), which ignores every other film in the series, including Halloween II from 1981, the original sequel to the first film (not to be confused with Halloween II from 2009, which is a sequel to the 2007 Halloween). Halloween III had nothing to do with any other film in the series, so every subsequent film obviously ignored that. Then the seventh film, Halloween H20, ignored 4, 5 and 6 and the 8th film retconned H20's ending.

I can't remember what it was, but there was this one silent film where an actor was having live ammunition fired at him, and several of the shots were inches from hitting him in the head.

To further expand on the Life of Brian, the extras were told they wouldn't be paid for the day if they broke character and laughed, hence why they were trying so hard, a genius move on the Directors part but also a pretty cold one for a excellent result.

I talked to a British guy who was a minor extra in The Patriot. He played a lieutenant or captain or some low rank that gets shot in the head. They had blasting caps attached to his forehead/face or something, but didn't let him know exactly when they were going to set off the caps. They caught him offguard and he yelled "Oh fuck" or something. Not sure if it made it into the film, but it was a cool story.

kind of reminds me of a audible swear in LOTR Two Towers during the siege of Helms Deep. The part where a group of Rohan soldiers(most of whom were actually soldiers in the New Zealand Army) were bracing the gate and when the battering ram throws them back from the gate you can actually hear one of them exclaim "Motherf@@ker!" if you listen for it lol

It's funny how people are making a big stink about Eastwood kissing a 12 year old but when 12 year old Kirsten Dunst had to kiss Brad Pitt I don't remember anyone batting an eye.

The monty phyton one was that all the roman soldiers were extras and said to remain as statues and not react to the scene if they want to get paid. Little did they know that the crew had planned for the scene to involve them and try to make the extras break character. So yes, those extras were really trying to earn their keep.

Not gonna lie, the Clint Eastwood kiss was fukkin' creepy. When the hell is it appropriate for an old man to kiss a 12 year old girl on the lips, and without telling her? The Leslie Nielsen slap, assuming it actually connected (didn't seem so) would've also resulted in him getting into a shitheap of trouble had it been done today. I don't generally care about stories of actors going off script or doing something unpredictable in a shoot, but those two examples just rub me the wrong way.

In Thor Love and Thunder, Corg wasn't meant to fall to pieces. The crew thought he had died, but he was able to talk as just a head, so they kept it in. You should add it to your list.

Nonsense. Most scenes are shot from two perspectives, requiring a change of perspective. So most of the “reactions” are purely an act.

I'm actually in shock at the Flick Beanwood scene.

In Kiss of the Dragon, starring Jet Li, the scene in the Chinese shrimp chip place, when he protects Bridget Fonda from her pimp slapping her by pulling him off his feet into the air, and slamming him on a table, and then slaps him across the face. The whole scene took seconds, and the actors facial expression, you can tell, was one of genuine shock. At least thats what is told in the commentary. Jet Li really did that to the actor, and I guess the guy didn't know what had happened to him until it was done.

I have to say, I'm not a fan of the directors not telling actors when they're going to get kissed, spit in their face, etc. It's just weird. and in many cases criminal. I really hope Clint Eastwood didn't know that the girl hadn't agreed to it. Either way, the scene is still weird as hell.

Half these stories are missing a lot of the details that make the stories notable, like the after-damage value of the guitar, the specific directions from Whedon on Avengers or that biggus dickus got told he wouldn't get paid if he laughed.

Leslie Nielson, Clint Eastwood are totally disgusting. A small correction : "In the 1977 Exorcist II movie, during the first shot, actress Linda Blawerick made a wrong step and plummeted. Actress Linda Blair played the whole movie as a replacement. Nobody never ever heard about Linda Blawerick, you can check on Internet."

Half of these I don't believe. It's funny how the crew are never aware of the 'improv' but for some reason all the cameras are focused so that they are perfectly in frame. Like the Clint Eastwood shot. That's two camera angles, not one. Yes, they could have had two cameras running, but they generally don't do that, they have one camera and do two takes.

Yes, most of these are a crock. Anything showing two angles means one of those is probably not a "genuine" reaction. The Titanic spit scene, for example, may have been a surprise on the angle facing Kate Winslet, but not the reverse angle showing Billy Zane's reaction, which would have to have been done after, since the camera would have been visible from the other angle.

Maybe because they are already making a movie, but suddenly the actor deviates from the original script and does something unplanned. And that's how it gets recorded.

Ok wow a couple of those are really cringe and would be professional suicide if done today. There is one I would like to add. In lord of the rings when Gandalf bumps his head on archway and then turns around and plants his face in the chandler in Frodos house was real but it was so believable they left it in.

do people realize that even if that one piece is a genuine reaction the scenes that follow usually weren't done in chronological order or in "real time" they probably get that jar of dirt song one day and then add those reactions later. besides the scene in the continous shot the cast reactions to it might be added much later or even earlier in the day or week etc.
