My sincerest apologies for my tardiness and temporary lack of presence. I discovered the most delightful purveyor of pastries along the way, and I felt like it would be most forthcoming of me to purchase a few delectable delights for those who I've spent so long engaging in fantasy stories with. Would it be too forward of me as a player to request that the DM turn back the hands of time that were set into motion during my absence, in exchange for my offering of a few icing-covered circles of dough? Topped with a fair share of sprinkles, of course.

Sadly this has happened a lot in my games. As a DM I try to start a bit late so everyone's present when we start, but often the players say "I can control his/her character meanwhile", at the point we even have a "babysitting company" where players assign their characters to the most responsible character/the one they trust the most/Know the character very well (I must clarify I've been running a campaign with 10 players from level 1 to 20 since December of 2020), signing up that if they die it's not his/her fault, and they leave instructions for some specific cases~

For my campaign, we either start with someone else first for their little role play moment, and if the player has arrived then we can move on as usual. If we can’t have that happen, our DM uses the very helpful “Missing Character” table (not entirely sure what it’s called, but it exists). Our half-orc barbarian/monk was found by a band of children and was forced to entertain them or be poked by very sharp sticks until we found him and rescued him.

We’ve had several characters miss sessions in our campaign. But we each had a “default combo” to use even if we didn’t have their character sheet. So far, we had to use: Warlock: Hex Eldritch Blast, while flying on his broom. Paladin: “War Hammah!” Smite if it hits. Monk: Activate Jump item, leap 15’ into the air, grapple and stun whatever he lands on/drags down. Mine (never used) was “Zephyr Strike Booming Blade, with my Tressym Kitten using the Help action on me for Sneak Attack damage.”

Roars can be heard from within, and a couple icy breaths creep over the edges of the stands. Suddenly, the Dragon is loose, bloodied, and flying low towards the horizon. Hot on its trail, a Dwarf leaps off the top of the arena, 15’ into the air, stretches his hands (Eldritch Claw Tattoo), and slings himself onto the dragon’s neck with a drop kick. With a sudden cry, the dragon’s eyes start to fade, and it falls, head first, the Dwarf upright due to how he grappled, into the ground in front of the arena.

The campaign I DM only has three players, so if one is missing it’s a pretty big deal! The one I get to play in has five, and we all have another character that is close enough personality wise that we can trust with our character if we’re gone/late. If combat breaks out that same person has played your class before (usually) and takes care of basic combat.

Once a member of my party was late (and didn't bring food btw). In the end, he had to bring the rest of the group out of prison and get us a good lawyer to proof that an invisible spell from a witch actually stabbed the leader, who was at the time in the same room with all of us, expect of the one who was late (in the campaign he was sick and in his room and didn't even know what happend or where we were)
