Ohhh God, the part about "now to bring up my issues with the campaign in front of the whole group, instead of in private!" hit so close to home! My first dnd group post-pandemic-start ended with one of the members doing EXACTLY THAT! And making it out to be all about how we'd all wronged HER and made HER feel left out after she'd been, imho, pretty show-boaty the entire fuckin' time! I was new to the group, though I'd known the woman who invited me for a long time, and the other girl actually targetted me, my friend, and the dm specifically before flouncing when the dm tried to be as understanding as he could be in that situation. She made the entire group have an existential crisis and carried it into her OTHER campaigns and just wouldn't let it go, until I went from low-key wondering if I'd done something wrong to realizing that the woman was just being a total asshole! Cue my social anxiety turning into "FITE ME!🤬" because I was seeing my long-term friend and nice, new friends all struggle with the aftermath, and I was SO DONE! The group didn't continue after that because of that one woman's bullshit, but we've stayed in touch, and me and long-term friend have found other groups since then, so it wasn't a TOTAL loss, but it has had actual psychological ramifications for these people long after the actual event and it STILL makes me mad! It's not all bad, though. Me and friend are GIRLFRIENDS, now, so hey. 😃 I'll count THAT aspect as a win for me in the long run.

But a lot of people can't shake it, either because of rampant narcissism or their previoud groups enabled it for so long they really don't understand. If you have tried talking with them, and they refuse to listen. You have to be willing to cut them out or even walk away from that group.

Ranger is fine, as long as you're not a pre-Tasha/PHB-only Beastmaster. Even before some better subclasses came in other books, the Hunter was still functional. Just a bit underwhelming when compared to other martial classes mechanically. But still able to pull their own weight. Pre-Tasha beastmaster was trash though. Which is why the DM in this skit was fine, until he mentioned the beastmaster subclass. Pre-Tasha beastmaster was just a subpar Ranger with deadweight shacked around its neck due. Why? Because they competed with any of your worthwhile abilities for your main action. So 90% of the time, the pet gets left in a corner somewhere doing nothing. The most famous/infamous example of this would probably be Trinket from S1 of critical role. Tasha's moved that to the bonus action, unfucking the beastmaster action economy and simplified the stats of the pet. But even after the change, it still suffers from being a pet focused class. Which practically means it functions as another character that has to be managed and accounted for, in and out of combat. This is fine in low-man games, but if you already have a party of 5+, a lot of DM's will sigh a bit. Necromancer and conjurer builds suffer from similar issues. It can be a headache for DM's, especially if the player isn't on top of their shit and is indecisive with what they're doing. It can very easily turn into 20+ minute rounds of combat.

To him not being allowed to go on a completely different mission than the one I prepared and all the other players were doing because it suited his whims better was "railroading" also all easily predictable consequences for his actions were me "railroading" him. For example he threatened a guard who was protecting a king and y'know... got arrested for it. He the demanded via PM that I release his character from the jail, becuase it wasn;t fair that he got arrested just for "asking a question" and I was only doing it to prevent him from making the story end differentally than I intended. the question btw was "well If you won't let me through the door [where the king is] what if I threw a rock at your face with a sling"

@@piranhaplantX "Railroading" is also sometimes an essential feature of a campaign, to prevent your players from going on a wild goose chase for an item or NPC that is only a mile away from them, or having to backtrack later because they never got the poem that opens the second part of the dungeon from the wizard NPC they were supposed to consult with before leaving town. Also not every single adventure in DND has an open ended conclusion (in fact I would say the majority of them don't) This player seemed to be legitimately expecting me to provided some sort of completely open word game where I could run which ever adventure he decided he wanted to go on that day. He seemed to be utterly unable to understand that as a DM i have to PREPARE an adventure before I can run it despite it being explained to him multiple times by multiple players. He would alwars respond "well maybe you could just get better at imporovising." I'm sorry?! Improvise an ENTIRE ADVENTURE on the spot?!! Also all of his "Adventure Ideas" revolved around him delving into his character's cringey edgelord pirate backstory and left the rest of the players high and dry. He was honestly at such a point of an inability to understand that other people have other needs and desires than him, that i think he would need professional help to be able to hold a conversation with somebody let alone play dnd he had been my friend in high school which is why I invited him but he had clearly had not matured like AT ALL in the 4 years since graduating.

Even "complaining" in private can be rude. I mean If you are not having fun or have another issue you need to tell the DM that you are not having fun, explain why you are not having fun, and come up with a way for you to have fun. but the term "complaining about the campaign" to me sounds more like you are just bitching about stuff you don't like in a non-productive way. Also there are definitely some cases where when you are not having fun it is because of you and not the DM. In order to determine if the reason for your lack of enjoyment is self borne you need to think of what it would take for you to have fun. Is that something that the DM can reasonably provide without signifigantly impacting the enjoyment of other players? if not you are being unreasonable in your expectations from them and they either are not the right DM for you, or you are not allowing yourself to enjoy the game by being to up tight about your expectations.

Story tiime! The only person I've ever seen kicked out of a group was from my first D&D campaign (well more specifically PF1e) -Dude demanded to play 3rd party after DM had stated no 3rd party, all because he "wanted to play an engineer" -Dude then got the DM to print and bind the classbook that the DM printed for him out of giving up arguing with him -Dude then never actually bothered to read said classbook -Only ever cast one spell, flaming sphere, including when we were on our own boat in the middle of the ocean -Never paid attention to combat, which lead to flaming spheres being thrown on party members -Metagamed CONSTANTLY "I should get a mechanical computer and build a full achemedes death ray on our boat at lvl 3 (which we started at) because my character is an engineer and those were real ancient technologies *pulls up Wikipedia pages*" -Demanded that "because he's an engineer" he should get to do whatever he wants (ie: use firearms with no misfire chance and access all gunslinger abilities "because an engineer would know how to use a gun to its fullest potential", "oh my turn I build a full ballista and fire it twice at the hydra" 'you cant do that, you are lvl3 and your turn only lasts 6 seconds, you need days to harvest materials and build a ballista' "BuT I'M aN EnGiNeeR" -Routinely would just get up without saying anything, go to the washroom and take the biggest shit and leave it without flushing (we played at the DM's brother's place, a guy in the armed forces) -Woudlnt ask for tea, wouldn't ask for snacks. Would just get up, walk to the kitchen and start rifling through the DM's brother's cabinets until he found something he liked Gotta say, while kicking him out absolutely made the party work WAY better together, I'll still miss my favorite conversation I've ever heard. For context, this dude is a scrawny pasty white nerd that as a 5'6' dude even I felt like I could break him like a twig. This is the conversation: Everyone: *quietly waiting for final player to arrive and just vibing* Everyone: ... Him: "So how do you feel about bigger girls?" DM: "uhh, fine I guess. Whered this come from?" Him: "Just thinking. Because I really like them" Player 1: "cool, glad you know your type" Him: "No, I don't think you understand what I mean. Where other people stop, I START." Everyone: *wondering what the hell is going on but so happy to have witnessed this*

The being on the phone one was actually quite prevalent in the first group I played with. I wasn’t one of those people a lot of the time but I did slip up once in a while.

  • @ValeOfMuses

Interesting little exploration of that: my first group was basically my dad's circle of friends getting together once a month or so and spending the day on socialization under the excuse of playing the game, and my brother and I started getting brought along when I was in third grade. Thing is, I was in *third grade* and we came in with zero understanding of what on Earth was supposed to be happening; we'd been asked about four questions and then the then-GM (and host) whipped up some characters for us, and we just kinda got dumped in. Did I mention there was no roleplaying and the story was an excuse for combat, basically? And we were playing 4e? So, obviously, the two literal children developed habits of just not paying attention until it was our turn. I remember one session where I literally read the entire time and told Dad to get my attention when it was my turn and tell me who to aim at, and just cast Magic Missile from then into eternity. This generally continued until that campaign finished and a new one started, the GM changed, we moved into a different room of the house, and I was old enough to actually be interested now. My best friend and his father had also joined, making us a staggeringly large group that only continued to grow. And this is where the key thing happened: I tried to roleplay and actually have a character. We'd all gotten dreams from the Greek gods, and I tried to actually tell the other players about mine - they were passed out on slips of paper, everyone had a different one - and the old GM just looked at me and said, "We know. Sit down." They never taught me the mechanics, to the point where I still don't know how to cast Magic Missile or where on the character sheet I would find that information. I spent the entire session every time quietly chatting and roleplaying with my friend, even as my brother actually managed to integrate. I left the group in late high school, at the end of a third campaign altogether run by my friend's dad, when the three young ones betrayed everyone else and sided with the big bad. I was the first casualty, because I forgot that one of our clerics could simply say "no" to sleep spells entirely... for the entire party. Anyways, back to the point: that decade or so of being with them left me with the habit of doing something else during the session, especially combat, when there's literally nothing for me to latch onto or interact with. However, I've since found a great tiny group (three to five players per game versus a whopping sixteen PCs by fourteen players when I left) online, where I can just quietly play minigames between turns without losing track between my turns, and which prioritizes the story and the combat is fairly incidental and/or there for the person who starts getting snippy if he doesn't get to be awesome enough.

He also was kind of a hypocrite. I played a bard who once went to listen in on a secret conversation between some NPCs. His character loudly told mine that it was rude to listen in on people's conversations, which the NPCs heard and then moved rooms so I couldn't hear. @@azrik6084 the thing I do with Min maxers is I explain that they built a really strong character and that it is fine, but that the other players do not enjoy min-maxing their own characters and that the character the min-maxer built is not balanced with the rest of the party and it makes the game less fun for the other players when your character kills all of the enemies and they barely get a hit in. If you want to continue playing the character this way I will have to make everyone elses character X levels higher than yours so that they can be more on your character's level and feel like they are actually an important part of the encounter. I call this concept "meta-balancing" where you purposefully give specific players some sort of boon to make sure that they are on level with other players. Taking away from the stronger players is a last resort, and you always explain to the players who are not getting the boon Why the boon is needed for the Health of the game. If the Min-Maxer is not okay with the other players being brought up to his level after you explain why you are doing it, there are 2 possibiliities as to why, the first is that they are not min maxing because they just enjoy making characters that are super strong, they are actively trying to be "the strongest" in the group which is a problem. the other is they are upset because he feels like he "earned" his strong character but everyone else just got a "hand out" in this case remind them that the point of dnd is for everyone at the table to have fun and feel like they are an equal member of the team and that it is impossible if his character is so much stronger than everyone elses.

I've played 4e. The thing I didn't like about it was that it forces you to play a single concept with each character. Basically it gives each clas two or three ways to play and if you try and mix them or choose a different path your character is ineffective. If it didn't do that then yes it would be fun. For me, it was simply too limiting. From what I understand of 5th edition, it doesn't limit you, but instead it makes it so every character can do the same thing. Making uniqueness and individuality obsolete. Those are my reasons for not liking the new editions. But that's just my opinion.

Same. I never really understood the hate for 4e, though it helps that it was also the first TtRPG system I was taught. It also helps that I joined well after they updated the math in the monster manuals so that rather than enemies being huge sacks of HP that did low damage, they had significantly less HP but did much higher damage.

It's a give and take. The bigger anything is the more watered down and "decorative" it becomes. This occurs because, in appealing to a mass market, you have to be generally palatable to a wide range of tastes over targeting specific tastes well. Similarly, the wider the audience of something, the less people are really into what differentiates it from alternatives, and the more it becomes an accessory more than a genuine interest. People become into that thing less because they are actually into it and more because it's the thing to be into, and in not being genuinely into the thing, they water down the community as well. Of course, this forms a shitty cycle: things that are unique and interesting become popular on those strengths, and in becoming popular they lose what makes them unique and interesting, both of themselves, and of the communities around them, which leads to people reacting by creating new niche things and building new communities. Of course, being bitter at the "mainstream" doesn't really help, and there likely is no solution, because the problem is that we are human, and humans are unfit to be anything more than a bunch of tribalistic apes.

Lol... Gotta say, i make a point of trying to align characters to mess with but not destroy other pcs but you can't fix stupid i guess, and some "murdering you is what my character would do" situations i respect. There was one campaign where i made a point of explaining i was going to paladin and there was one guy who joined late who just would not respect that even a little, and it got to the point where either i needed to be a very bad Paladin and break the character entirely or smite him. He got all uppity about me asking him several times to not do that and i finally just dropped the campaign because it was either that or murder his ass. Different campaign, but when i did eventually do a 3rd act turn to villainy because of shenanigans power plays i was totally cool with that character getting murderized. It was irritating, but fair.

@@seigeengineIn what way could he be? Gatekeeping is toxic and ruins the fun of a collaborative group activity. As per the rules of DnD, there is only one rule have fun. There's nothing wrong with playing the game nontraditionally if everyone at the table agrees. Or even teaching someone how to play. But when you make an ass of yourself and behave abusively YOU'RE the problem and should leave. And it seems you just don't like hearing that. Like you need to project and blame the group for yourself getting ejected because you chose to be a prick instead.

It's a bit of an ask for me to remember exactly what I meant in an indirect comment, though, if I had to wager a guess, it would be about this being a hypothetical stewing in their head suggesting something screwy going on. But the fact you twisted it into your little fantasy story where you got to attack a stranger with wild personal attacks pretty clearly shows you're not only exactly what you're criticizing, but are exactly the problem.

  • @lordkameguru7851

@seigeengine 🤣 Holy shit the audacity. You really are just out here with negative self awareness right now. You attacked someone personally for NO reason. Got called out in a reasonable manner that suggests you are likely the very kind of problem player being criticised in the hypothetical due to your offense taken at it. And now you are doubling down that the original poster must be mentally unwell (a personal attack). Further of note is that in your defensiveness you only highlighted your own hypocrisy through projections. You complain about personally attacking a stranger. This whole thing started with YOU doing exactly that. You insinuate that it must be stewing in their head despite us being in the comment section of a very relevant video which would reasonably spark these thoughts and discussion. This is done in a dismissive manner and used to paint OP as unwell. That is CLASSIC literally TEXTBOOK abuser tactics. You try to paint me as making a wild fantasy of you. No. I'm being reactionary. Simply observing your clear behaviour and pointing it out. You attacked a stranger for a hypothetical on a relevant video that did not mention or reffer to you. That's pretty often done by people who know they're abusive but don't want to admit it. That's a pretty clear defensiveness. There's no fantasy in observing and identifying the general patterns of human behaviour. You try to claim I'm what I hate at the end, which almost sounds so 🔥. That is until you remember I've not acted as a gatekeeper... hmmm. And you say it's a bit of an ask for you to remember your headspace? I'm sorry but WHO asked?! Cause it sure as shit wasn't me. I didn't ask you *anything*. I also didn't notice or care about the date. Especially because it seems time hasn't lent you any personally growth. But again that requires self awareness don't it? Go seek therapy. That's not a joke or an insult. You seem like someone who could genuinely benefit from it and I'm worried for the people in your personal life who have to deal with your behaviour on a deeper and more consistent basis.

It makes the bag of holding into a normal bag but does 1d6 bludgeoning damage. Yet if the diddly-squat falls out of the "as said" bag, it becomes a bag of holding once again and the diddly-squat does nothing.
