WHEN A FRESHLY REBUILT ENGINE EXPLODES, MARK WANTS ANSWERS!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A catastrophic failure causes a 440 Magnum to grenade and destroys everything around it. Why did it happen and why is the customer blaming the shop?

I can't help cringing every time a complete motor gets wheeled around with the carburetors wide open. Having worked on cars forever, one of the first things I was taught was that a carb should be covered so nothing could find it's way into the engine. Why take any chances on something so easily avoided.

The rod has only one bolt in it. Probably one of the nuts was not torqued, and run down with a speed handle. It got missed and 10 foot pounds held it together for a short while. The noise was the rod rattling as the nut came off, and the big end splayed, and spit out the bolt. Major Destruction showed up instantly. Just my thoughts having seen more than a few catastrophic failures in the shop.

Yep, as you put the final torque on the rod, you mark it (I write final torque and stretch down on the build sheet).

I’m 63. I live in Michigan. Years ago I went to a renowned engine builder in Livonia Michigan. They pulled out a car with a freshly built motor. They did a couple of carburetor adjustments then did some fast runs in the industrial park. I was like? The engine builder said if it’s going to break it will break now. With that being said I’ve had them build me an engine for my 1972 Gran Torino. What a monster that car was back in the early eighties with not one problem. It ran 10 sec in the quarter. A few cars later and my last hoorah in life is a 1957 Ford 300 Custom with 2100 hp and will be a sleeper street car. 2024

I just found this channel a week or so ago and so far it's been AWESOME. This is also the first time I've seen virtually ANYONE talk about the '66 Charger. It was the first "muscle" car I ever saw that made me go "wow". It was a '66 Hemi Charger (introduced the hemi engine from what I recall, I was young...), had been painted pearl white, and some innovative person had positioned spotlights at the front of the car facing to the back, and everywhere there was a shadow they painted the shadow blue. (Flares, door handles, everything) Car looked like it was going 100 mph standing still.

Obviously, the first thing you should do with a freshly rebuilt vintage engine is put your foot to the floor and leave it there. It's really good for the engine.

It's so much fun to challenge the "operator" of the vehicle who was in it at the moment the engine mysteriously locked up, and get him to admit he was beating on it at that moment, despite all his previous assertions. The "I'm the asshole who did this" admission is a golden moment.

Just found your channel and love it - some of my favorite memories are of the only new car I ever bought - a 1970 charger with 383 magnum. I think that series chargers had the sexiest body lines. I have never had a car I loved as much.

Mark said that was the worst damage he has seen in an engine. I had a 1974 road runner with a 318 which I blew up, the cylinder walls between 3 and 5 were completely gone the rods put a massive hole thru the pan, and the biggest piece of piston i found was a little bit bigger round than a 50 cent piece. When I first heard a rod starting to knock it still carried me about 7 miles back towards town. Stopped about a mile out of town. LOL just saying.

So... Parts fail when you over stress the motor.... but they don't necessarily explode just then. Once a crack forms - it never gets smaller - it just gets bigger till one day, on your drive to church - kaboom. The actual failure happened earlier. And since the motor only has 67 miles on it...... Talk to the machine shop... Rod bolts all tight?

Chrysler-Plymouth dealerships had such difficulty selling the dodge daytonas that they had to discount them at a loss. Plymouth Superbirds were far more popular than the dodge daytonas that Chrysler sent to dealers 1935 Superbirds and only 503 dodge daytonas. Mark needs to stop his dodge worship.
