Instead of just dumping fuel down the carb throat and into the intake, I use an old mustard bottle with a tip on it and put the tip into the vent tube on the carb and then fill the entire bowl of the carb. The engine will then start and idle for 30 seconds or longer, which is plenty of time to allow the fuel pump to prime the system and get fuel up to the carb. It's REALLY important when it comes to breaking in an engine with a flat tappet camshaft that you set it up so that it just fires up and immediately runs the first time that it is cranked over. Excessive cranking, running for a few seconds then dying, more cranking, more dying, is VERY hard on a flat tappet cam and very much increases the chances of an unsucessful break-in of the cam and lifters, and can easily result in a flat camshaft shortly down the road, in a few thousand miles. Years ago, I've had a few cams go flat early on in their lives just because I fiddle fucked around trying to get the engines started the first time... And yes, I did have the proper Zinc break-in oil in the motors also. Once I started paying more attention to getting the engines to INSTANTLY fire up, AND be able to keep running once started, (by making sure that the timing is correct before I started them, and filling the fuel bowl on the carb so it will run long enough to pick up fuel from the tank, making sure that the cooling system is full and not leaking, having the radiator shroud in place so the engine doesn't over heat and have to be shut down, making sure there is no leaks from the transmission or lines and cooler, and so on..) so that I could immediately start, and complete the break-in process without any interruptions, I had no more early cam failures. Yes, a flat tappet cam IS that sensitive before it is properly and completely broken-in. After 20-25 minutes of uninterrupted break-in at varying RPMs from 2000-2400, then the motor can be shut off, restarted, and played around with as much as you want.

I did too and I remember how unreliable they were how they leaked oil and basically smelled like c*** after a few years..... Taking those old poorly manufacturing vehicles and completely rebuild them so to speak is an art and they can look good and run well.. Yeah you could say they had character..they had moody smelly so nasty then leave you on the side of the road type of character...🤣

When I first started driving, my neighbor offered to trade me his 1970 Challenger, a 340 six-pack T/A with bucket seats and a four-speed, in plum-crazy. I had a 1969 Datsun 510 with a full Mulholland suspension, fender flares, posi diff, and an 1800 SSS engine with a header, cam, closed chamber head, and a 5-speed conversion. I turned him down because gas had just jumped over $1.25 a gallon. He tried the hard sell, told me if I kept my foot out of it it got the same mileage as a two barrel. Sometimes I regret not taking him up on his offer.

I did something like that . I was offered an old Dodge for five hundred bucks.i never saw it but turned it down.the next week I bought a 69 super bee orange the black stripe 383 Magnum 4 speed and when the person that told me about the first car saw it they said it was just like the car they was selling but there's was way clearer 😢 ohh well. But I still loved my super bee Nothing like the power of a big block mopar I miss that car

They missed alot more than contaminated oil the fuel tank wasn't fully put together, fixing the fuel problem was the final nail in the coffin for that engine 😂👍🏽

The troubleshooting and engine work are pure amateur hour. Using an abrasive wheel to clean the gasket surfaces right over top of the valley? Really? And those pushrods went in bent. Not to mention stuck rings on a brand new build? You guys better stick to body work

My past experience with the same situation; I sent the long block out to the machine shop, tanked and machined. I got it back and assembled the motor, started it, and immediately sent my girlfriend to run an errand. She called twenty minutes later to say it was running rough and getting progressively worse! The machine shop did not rinse the oil channels after the hot tank!

@@martinbeaulieu9008 It is the builders responsibility (you) to check the final clean condition of all the components before assembly. Every part needs to be checked for debris. Looking inside pushrods, looking inside oil holes of the crankshaft, everywhere oil goes needs to be looked at. You cant just wash the engine and expect it to be ready to assemble. Machine shops tank the block to keep your dirty ass grungy shit out of their clean honing oil, and afterwards to keep dragging an oily block around. You can specify that you want a final cleaning for assembly, but the end of the day you still need to look for yourself. You cant just run spirits through a hole and expect it to be clean. Just like you really cant assemble (or shouldn't) assemble an engine without proper checking of clearances, bearing, piston to wall, ring gap, thrust, etc. Part of engine building tools are engine cleaning and inspection tools, long brushes, flashlights, bendable steelman probe lights to name a few.

That’s awful whoever sabotage the engine. That’s crazy. However you guys did an amazing job on that 1970 Plymouth Cuda. That’s exactly what I want just like that. High five 🖐️

Sand clumps up when it gets wet, that wasn't really clumpy and it seemed slightly larger than sand. I am fairly certain that's blasting media. That engine was blasted and poorly cleaned afterwards. I don't think it was sabotage at all.

@@sonny9608 Media is a general term for material used for cleaning up a block and doesn't necessarily mean walnut. And yes, some shops do use walnut media, then dip or flux the block. Other medias are soda, Steel shot (also called shot peening), glass beads, or aluminum oxide grit. I can't say what that is for sure, but it doesn't act like sand. You also have to keep in context this show and it's conflicts are almost all staged. There is no indication that motor was sabotaged to the point that their facebook page had several promotional's such as " Who remembers this 1970 'Cuda 340 from a few seasons ago? Who sabotaged the engine? Comment your answers below." and "WHO SABOTAGED THE 340 IN OUR '70 'CUDA? GUESSES BELOW!". I mean for god sakes they thought it was the park cables rattling underneath at first. Is sand still possible? sure. Does it look like it? nope and I'm not the only one who has commented as such. was it all staged? sure was. Everything he "covered" was told second hand by him in his account of what other people said happened. Hersey on a reality TV show, zero credit.

It's just his sense of humor. I thought the same but when you rewatch the episodes you realize he's just really passionate about his work. Not many in Mopars know as much as he does. Honestly, I'd be the same. In the end, you can tell what a genuine guy he is because he takes on sometimes pretty rough cars and does it for the owners to relive the memories. The show is really about the people and stories when you get down to it.

I am not sure if you understand fully what is involved here. This isn't a mom and pop garage. He's not doing 50 dollar oil changes to senior citizens and big haired secrataries. He's offering a product that simply is NOT available, and he's dealing with people who can, and do, think throwing money is the answer to everything. He HAS to present himself this way, it's just the way that industry works. Otherwise, they would be making knock off Cuda replica cars in China. That, and he really DOES have that tribal knowledge. If his sense of humor isn't for you, or if he comes across as a know it all, do yourself a favor, and watch something else.

I am NOT a fan of Any Chrysler Product But the Muscle car era of Chrysler is Awesome, from 1964 to a972 they did make some sweet cars with great power plants. You guys are doing an awesome job of bringing these great cars back to life. as far as this car as soon as you started it up I would have shut it down, I heard bottom the end noise immediately.

This is a repost of an old episode. I have never seen a response from Mark or anyone else on the crew as to whether or not that block was properly cleaned before reassembly. It would be a rookie mistake to leave that step out, but I still believe that to be more likely than Darren dumping sand into the crank-case.

That can also happen if you dont get the block cleaned out after sand blasting it.

The camshaft spins exactly half crankshaft rpm, and there's only one pair of lobes for each pair of rockerS. It's every revolution for the crank and every OTHER crankshaft revolution for the top we focus on when diagnosing engine noise.

What a shocker that some ex-employee would destroy an engine in that shop. That guy who's the owner is a mouthy dude.

Give you a couple of tips 27:12 on the troubleshooting Worman,next time unbuckle the trans from the engine eliminate the trans and use a simple flat cut broom handle to listen to the engine in diff ares to pin down where the noise is coming from.Old school taught me that years ago used it many X

Why did you wait to check all the fluids 🧐🤔 especially the oil? Maybe I missed a part of this live video ... 🤨😊🧐😝 And also check for failures - coolant in the oil, oil in the coolant, etc ? Sometimes sand in the oil will make itself known before noises or catastrophic failure - without dropping the oil pan - remove the valve covers to check for sand or grit (metal or otherwise).

When they took the top end apart, there was no sand at that time or it would have been noticed. That means the sand came after the first repair attempt. Mark said he built the engine himself. Maybe he added it after the failure to cover his ass and deflect the blame?

I would have grabbed a wood broom handle and put it up to each part of the drive train until the noise was found. It's a old school way that always works much like a stethescope for the heart. Shocking none of the guys tried this method !

Why would you just leave an engine sitting on the floor for months on end without taping the intake & exhaust ports and pcv system shut. That engine should have been sitting high on a shelf elsewhere.

I love the car but I have a ? correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't it have a ThermaQuad carb on it to be factory ?

I'd take this car over a Hemi or 440-6 pack car anytime , even if budget was unlimited.

Many of the 318 motors from the early 70s seemed to have a variety of intake issues, including manifold warping that caused the inability to keep them in tune.

I love Mopars. Owned several. Can't watch this dramatic bullshit.

Sand in the carb , manifold or dip stick would have been easy to determine and left evidence in those areas . Sand blast seems like it , they could always send out the oil for analysis, sand vs medium . There are different types of sand , sand from the ground which has irregular sized granules , masonry sand etc . Medium is very consistent and more like flour . My guess is it medium

@35:09 Sorry but your "Facts" are highly disputable. You slam a unknown person yet you present no proof other than your own reporting of what a machine shop supposedly said. 7:14 and @25:26 shows me everything I need to know about the shop, the engine builder and the quality of engine repairs performed at the shop. Not related to the claim of sand in the engine but clearly the use of a surface prep disk is a cause of the scuffing grit and damage It is ok to use surface prep disk`s when preparing a part to be installed on an engine. Absolutely never use a surface prep disk on a open engine to prep for new gaskets. Don't tell me you have done it for years. Save the BS about covering all the openings. The fact that you may have never had a issue or "your engine has been running for Years" after does not mean squat. The moment you spun that disk you covered every sticky oily surface with aluminum oxide from the disk Iron from the part gasket material from the gasket. The very best you can do is wash 50% of it down into the pan with solvent. Anything less than a hot spray cablet washing will clean the block and parts sufficiently to remove the contaminates. There is a time and place for surface prep disk`s that place is never near a open engine. The mention if the engine being 40 feet from a sand blaster is just as concerning. But honestly from this side of the video I would suspect some part of that freshly painted engine was not cleaned well enough before assembly and is the source of the sand. It is to easy to leave media in a oil baffle or pcv fitting if so equipped. What I got from this video is the original engine builder / assembler did a piss poor job and most likely dose not build engines for a living. The shop is run like a true body shop not an engine rebuild / repair shop. Finally, you wasted quite bit of time blaming someone else and, in the end, grudgingly paid a professional to do what should have been done in the first place. Your shop clearly dose quality restorations and you clearly are knowable in your chosen profession. But running a quality shop is as much about owning your mistakes and making changes to ensure they never happen again as producing the beautiful cars that I have seen on your show.

Discs of death. Never use them unless the part is off the engine and you don't care if it ever actually seals again. You are 100% correct about them. If you use them on an open engine, or any alloy part, you are nothing more than a flat rate time hack trying to bust the book. Most of the engines I build are re-do jobs from someone else who works cheaper. I get them after the customer is fed up with dealing with the original engine jack and wants it done rite. I'm more expensive, because it takes me longer. But I do it once.

can that sand be diagnosed where it came from ?maybe found out the be sand blasting sand >??does that sand blaster still work for u??

I can get the timing within a degree or two every time. Just experience and listening. I tune every engine by ear and test drive it before ever putting a timing lite on it. Each engine wants different timing and it's a feel and listen thing. After I get it running how I want, I put a lite on if so the customer has a number to use.

First time I saw one of your videos. Kind of sad in that you completely skipped over what to me was the most entertaining, most educational and most important part of the video - the actual tear down, inspection and actual rebuilding of the engine. A video of teardown inspection and rebuilding could have shown the actual cause of the failure and the entire mystery saboteur blame game would not have any support in actual facts. Better to mix some sand, red chassis grease and engine oil then call it sabotage to divert blame.

Not every car that comes in is 100% OEM factory original. They do specialize in that. But! A lot of customers want to modernize different parts of their vehicles and it’s their choice. I had Edelbrock carburetors on several of my classic cars because they’re modern and more reliable. Then I even started using EFI. It’s all about customer choice.

Slightly bent push rods will make zero difference in how it runs. But I would swap them out before it's finished.

Push rods spin when the engine is running, wearing them evenly over the entire round end. When they are bent, they stop spinning as much, meaning they wear unevenly, eventually stopping their rotation, leading to complete failure.

Is this the episode where 'we reveal the full restoration'? I'm sure it as mentioned 6,7,8 or 20 times.

yep. most people would pass on the car in the original state. it takes someone who is very well heeled, to put that much money into a 2-1/2 year restoration. i cant begin to imagine what something like that would cost. im in the 'most people' category

Two take aways. First, restoring any car is not for the faint of heart - no matter how good the car looks, etc. etc. etc.,, one does not know what really needs to be done once the car is disassembled and second, with all due respect, the original engine rebuilder did not do a complete job - given the evidence there should have been many opportunities for the engine rebuilder to notice that something was rotten in Denmark. Not the restorers fault but ultimately his responsibility. Nonetheless, enjoyed the video and have always been impressed with this shop’s work. I actually chatted with Dave on the phone some years ago during a rebuild of a 69 Dodge Charger and found him professional and willing to chat about a small part for a relatively small amount of money without getting the feeling I was taking up his time. He truly loves these cars - one suggestion - a little less banter and dramatization please. If I want to look at a young female getting exciting about a car or anything, there are better opportunities.

Ok, I have a question ❓❓.... I love the cars and I know they worked on the little Red wagon But, I was just wandering why they don't show trucks if they work on them that is. Just curious.

I want the like this show because I have a huge love for Mopar, but he (Mark) reminds me of my uncle who was a horrible POS and makes this show unwatchable for me. His shop and people do awesome work and he is probably the most knowledgeable guy on he planet on Mopar, keep up the good work Mark (I’m sure he is a much better person than my uncle ever was).

@@CruisinCapriceA friend of mine took his Camaro to have it tuned after he built the new engine. 2 days later the owner of the tuning shop told him he and no oil pressure. He brought it back to our shop dropped the motor out and when he took the valve cover off he found what looked like a few tubes of valve grinding compound.

Actually the sand accident made it better. Overbored gives more cubic inches, more power even if it's just a bit. (40/thousandths.)

Mark. Guys. WTH! None of these issues should ever happen. Proper pre start up failure wow. Fuel Oil fully prime. Coil wire off till ready. Timing set test light on number one. Push rods may not been correct depending on head casting (U?) n Valve spring install height. Dowel pins in block set the belllhouse for starter mesh. Flex plate n T-convert only bolt up 1 way. Half head bolts only..55lbs. Blue locktite. Sand n black sludge nobody needs bull!! Educated guess a bit of old sludge

Still hiding in valve cover oil pan baffles or and pickup tube. Bang sand collection!! Lol.

I got bit one time A dirt dobber got into a cam oil gally.While the block had been sitting up Machine shop missed it.Cost me a cam and lifters

My brother had a 440 6 barrel cuda, that was the fastest car in our little town. Everyone thought that a 427 Chevy was the fastest but when the mopars got a hold of it they busted it up pretty bad. The first one to get it was a 440 super bee. But when my brothers cuda run it, it was much worse. That car run high10s at the drag strip. And that was before my brother built it even better. So, you chevy guys enjoy your car, but just don't run a mopar.

So do we reasonably suspect that Darren put sand in this engine or is there any other possible explanation?

I have had a fresh rebuilt transmission with a heap of sand in it! The housing had been blasted and never cleaned before assembly!

This is a bunch horse s***. Worman about has stroke when someone scratches a little paint. An engine he supposedly built gets “sabotaged” and he’s like “whatever”. Then there’s the idea that these 6 figure cars aren’t dyno tested and broke in before installation? I call BS on the whole show.

Parking pawl is non factor when not rolling.

first you it knock you shut it down and pull val covers and oil pan don't keep running it

It was an employee that had a purple charger.

I like the show and most all the people involved except for the owner Mark, Wow this guy should win the award for being the most arrogant person that I've seen! He's a cross between a used car salesman & clown and should really step aside and let the other crew members do the show and he could join the circus or try to sell used car's in Mexico!!!

I would be glad to see them show something different than the same car over and over each episode at lease show one you are starting on another one in the body work with motor assemblies and the last showing one almost done. But not each episode showing the same car each episode

This show has been on television for over 10 years. You don’t really think they show the same car in every episode, do you?

Pouring sand in an engine goes beyond "disgruntled". Destroying an engine is something a SOCIOPATH does...

From my experience of the same problem, i would say it was not sabbataged.

Took an engine to a rebuilder and they didn’t get the sand blasting sand out completely and it ran decent for about 5 minutes. Not sure Darrin would do that purposefully but that friendship is burned for good now!

Exactly dan. That was one of my experiences. Sand blasting and engines do not mix.

Kidding about what? Engine rebuilders should never blast engines and if they do they better be damn sure the sands gone. If that was true sand in marks fingers it would be chunky, that was blasting material.

Why is a 340 car, being painted heni orange on the engine? Should be blue..
