Thanks Nutn, cool surprise, I'll be sleeping in. I have a pre Accutrigger Savage Axis I bought from Wallyworld on closeout when the Accutrigger came in. Under $200 out the door. I free floated the barrel in the tupperware flexi-stock and did a redneck triggerjob on it, stoned the sear and striker, lighter trigger spring out of a ball point pen, and replaced the screw it sits on with a longer one for a trigger overtravel stop. It is astoundingly accurate with the Remington 30/06 180 gr PSP's I already had in stock. It keeps 3 shots touching a dime at my sight in distance of 235 yards proned out over my hunting daypack. Miracles of modern machining. A lightweight, cheap ass bambi blaster that tickles my redneck heart. 3 7d The Nutnfancy Project You got a great value shooter there Lon, wow. That Savage Axis is another great rifle. When people ask me what rifle to get for hunting it's a top rec' for sure. That caliber is perfect too. 1 6d Boone Mill Farm This went well with a cup of coffee this morning. Thank you Nutn. 1 7d The Nutnfancy Project You are welcome, glad you could come out Boone! 6d Josh I bought the 30-06 783 years ago from Sportsman Warehouse for under 400. Bolt handle and barrel have terrible bluing that needs a good layer of oil to keep from rusting. One of these days I'll give it a full paint over to save me the trouble. I'm glad you gave the 783 a good review since I've been thinking about getting rid of it for quite some time, as it kicks like a mule. I think I'll keep it a while longer, though I should've bought it in 308 to save my shoulder and my wallet some grief lol. 2 7d Cory Risseeuw Want to sell it? lol 7d Load 3 replies TheTopMostDog Thanks for the vid, mate! Shoots great and have a Leupold VX-2 3x9 on it. I would agree with the comment above, if you don’t keep it oiled it will rust. The finish isn’t that great. All in all it has been a great budget gun. 7d Lon N Perfect guns for some Krylon camo fun. As soon as my Axis got the scope mounted it was assaulted with rattle cans. 7d Andrey Shlyakt Even in bolt guns I am a capacity hog. I know for hunting you can't use more but more rounds in a long range tactical situation never seems like a bad idea. 7d Creative Mechanic I have the solution to that…. I'm not a hunter but still enjoyed the GRV. Looks like a real fun shooter. It's funny how accurate guns put smiles on our faces. $350, what's not to like? 3d Yams One of my favorite range guns is the savage axis XP. Spent like $200 on the thing, re-mounted the provided scope, and it’s been great since. When I’m looking to save Ammo, I just take this thing out and enjoy some precision shooting 1 3d Yams Been using the mossberg MVP (308) for longer range hunting and have been pretty happy with it. Worth a look. Though I’m a hipster with most of my hunting, since it’s usually between 0 and 100 yards, so I use a slug gun in a rifle state. And few things can beat the knockdown power of my savage 220 20 gauge sabot slug gun within that yardage. If you can find them, it’ll put Remington accutips within 1 inch at 100. That plus an aimpoint is my setup"

There's a reason that Remington discontinued the 788 back in the early eighties... Because it was a $99 department store rifle intended for poors that regularly outshot the expensive 700s. Remington couldn't have that. The 783 was close to the same story.

Reminds me of wanting to poke fun at people who think they are special or tacti-cool. Kind of like pulling up to a guy in a Porsche and saying, "nice Volkswagen," because they are designed by the same engineers. Lt Col is right. With this and other basic rifles ( I just added a TC Compass II to my little collection,) you can not only be effective at hunting, you could be effective at long range. If you are half MOA at 100 yards, that whole rifle is sub MOA. Which means you could shoot good groups at longer distance. The TC rifles are guaranteed to be 1 MOA out of the box, first three rounds. And mine was true to that. I shot 1/2 MOA on the first two shots, before zeroing, just to verify the precision of the barrel. Even better, I was still shooting 1 MOA with a hot barrel once I changed to some different ammo. My rifle weighed 7.5 pounds empty and bare. Which is not a deal breaker for me, at all. I would rather carry another pound for accuracy, if necessary and I think the barrel is thick enough to be accurate, as well as the enclosed action, similar to this 783. The TC is to be my hunting rifle on the move, since I hunt on public land. You can be hiking a few miles in a day. This is not a case of being on the edge of someone's field of milo and you ride a side-by-side to your elevated stand, so you only have to carry a few hundred yards in. So, with the low price and relatively low weight, You can spend your budget on good stuff to make it better. I know this is about the 783 but I find it comparable to the TC, which has my direct experience. No bipod because bipods add weight. I have come to the conclusion that bipods are good for bench rest and competition shooting but not as practical for hunting unless you get the long ones. And for that, I just carry my Bog Pod tripod in the frame backpack I carry (I live an hour from hunting land. Go ahead, be jealous.) I also practice off-hand, contrary to the advice of Jeff Cooper and also, improvise support, such as resting on a tree, very much with the advice of Jeff Cooper ("The Art of the Rifle.") There is a chance that I will see a target before I have time to settle down all calm and pretty. Just enough time to shoulder, get sight picture, and squeeze. The rifle is 1/2 MOA. But my wavering with off-hand may widen to 1 MOA. At less than 100 yards, I still get a dead deer. So, my rifle, loaded with 5 rounds of Federal Nontypical Whitetail .308 Win 150 grain, is 9 pounds 4.4 ounces, easy for me. Weight is not a deal breaker for me but I seek to shed a few ounces when possible or, at least, spend my weight and dollar budget (SAWR) in a way that works for me for accuracy and comfort. Muzzle brake, that kind that will accept a suppressor, later. Hydraulic recoil pad. That is my one weight concession to comfort. I have heavy high power scopes. Vortex Venom with zero stop, 35 ounces. Diamondback Tactical 6-24 / 50 mm FFP, 24 ish ounces. Crossire II 3-9 / 40 mm Dead Hold BDC (second focal plane), 14 ounces. So, after much consideration and the majority of my hunting in the woods is at 50 yards and less, I have put on the Crossfire II. Some say to zero at PBR, which, with my ammo, would be 1.8 inches high at 100 yards. I will still zero at 100 yards so that I can use the reticle for holds. And also, where I hunt, take off the dust cover, dial up two clicks, put the cover back on, I can aim dead on out to 50 yards. Good field of view, back off the mag just a little to get more of the deer in the view. You could do that with this 783. If, like Lt Col Nutnfancy, you like the Nikon Prostaff, I think they are not made anymore but I found a 3-9 / 40 on ebay for 130. I happen to like Vortex and you can get a new Crossfire II on Amazon for 117 + tax. Even though I am a Vortex fan boy, you don't have to buy one. If the Nikon that is more expensive by a few dollars, even used, is what you like, get that. I have done so. Others have disagreed with my choices but I buy what I want for the value it brings me.

Updating my own dang self. I changed back to the Diamondback Tactical 6x-24x / 50 mm FFP. I am just so comfortable with the EBR-2C reticle. And I get better mag. Granted, at 100 yards, I can zoom no more than 10 and still be clear, but that is a smidge more than the 9. And I have parallax adjustment. True, the Crossfire II has a thick crosshair that is always there. So, it is a matter of preference. Well, I re-weighed everything with the Diamondback on there and got the rifle solely on the scale at 9 pounds 7 ounces, which works for me.

My 783 is the regular black synthetic stock .308 caliber. Paid $300 CDN for it. I have cheap $99CDN, Bushnell scope from Canadian Tire on it. Zeroed my scope at 50 yards and it was bullet holes touching every shot. Moved out to 100 yards and fired twenty rounds and blew out the 2 inch bullseye completely. I was sniper trained in the British Army and carried a Parker Hale in 7.62 NATO with a top quality scope. I would match my 783 against that gun all day long. Great rifle!

When I was in law school I attended an upper level class with all the law school elite students on law review and moot court. They were like, "ya, we are going to ban ALL guns." I was thinking you people don't know my people. Seriously, the mindset of most lawyers is that the 2nd amendment is an anachronism and needs to be bent into being a legal fiction. I always mention that this is not a good idea because a defense authorization act in the 80s gave the President the control of the national guard so now only gun owning Americans are the state militias since the National Guard are now under Federal control. I am one of the few pro-second amendment lawyers out there and keep a low profile so my law license number does not get pulled by the bar association. People, they really are out to get your guns. It is not hyperbole. You have been warned.

Both "President" Biden and now Texas governor Candidate O'Roarke have both said, on national TV in main media outlets in public that they are intent on taking away your guns. Period, paragraph, end of book, forever, amen. There is no doubt, no rhetoric. As in your words, no hyperbole. Plain and simple, going to take your guns, hell or high water. Soi-disant President Biden has said, and I quote, "the amendment is not a permanent thing." So, my question as a non-attorney is, does that mean he will repeal the 13th? He and Obama and Bush Jr violated the 4th as if it did not exist.

I’m a fan of this design when it comes to accuracy. It’s essentially a Savage design. As long as the barrel is quality then that design is a proven super accurate design. The floating bolt head is a great feature for the money. In my opinion you don’t have to pay big money to get a super accurate bolt gun. The money starts stacking up when you want certain features on a bolt gun. I’ve owned several Savage rifles over the years and all have been super accurate. The bolt isn’t super smooth and has some slop, but dang do they shoot good. They honestly have been more consistent shooters overall then other rifles I paid a lot more for. Glad to see this Remington is solid too.

It's a savage design that was plagiarised into the marlin XL-7. When Remington took over marlin , they then took the design and made the it Remington 783. From memory the 783 and xl-7 bolt is interchangeable. I know a few guys who said the marlin XL-7 was a great gun once you bedded it down.

I have two of these. One in .270 Win and one in 30-06. I only handload, and each one is two MOA, or better, depending on the recipe. I put Boyd stocks on each of them, also with Nikon scopes on each. I absolutely love these rifles.

I have one of these in 223, in the standard black configuration. My only 2 minor complaints, the trigger was gritty on mine (some are better than others) and the stock was a little slick. Timney makes an outstanding trigger for these, and a little Talon tape fixed both. This rifle outshoots me !

I’ve been hand loading for 50 years and loaded up some 125 flat point hollow point (Sierra 30-30 bullet ) with H 4895 at about 2500fps !! My loads wouldn’t bolt up ! Inserted round and bolt wouldn’t close ! Called REM and sent 783 back and the camber was not bored deep enough! She hunted with her Marlin 7y 243 . Got 783 back and it shoots great very accurate! She killed her buck last year with the 783 nice little rifle!!

I bought a Rem 770 in 7mm08 for $269....8 years ago. It is a TACK DRIVER. Sure the bolt action is a bit clunky and the stock was cheap....but the cheap scope that came with it was just fine for the woods and against whitetails. I put it in a boyd's stock last year to dress it up and also a new scope.....its still a tack driver. And the sticky clunky bolt has finally smoothed itself out.

I bought one of these used three or four years ago from my local gun store. Wasn't even looking for any particular gun but for whatever reason it caught my eye and I didn't have a modern bolt action. Honestly didn't realize I had such a affordable gem of a rifle. I'll have to take it out again soon and see how the accuracy of mine fares. Its usually not my go to plinking rifle. Just talking .30 cal I'm more likely to grab my Ar10 or my Garand. My 783 is in 30-06 and has a mystery scope it came with used on it. Very well could be a factory mounted scope. Haven't searched for markings on it.

I didnt give up on it and I bought a leupold and and warne rings and I shocked how well it shot. I was blaming the gun in the beginning but as long as you buy a good scope and good rings and throw the other stuff away you will have a good rifle.

I bought one of these last year and I have had a few issues with it. The crappy sling hoops broke cause the plastic stock is kinda poop. The firing pin hits a little light and some steel cased ammo takes two strikes to go off. Other than that it's accurate and for the price I definitely don't regret it. I am planning on getting a hardwood stock for it at some point though just to pretty it up a bit.

Wow Nikon and the remington 783 both discontinued 😞. And someone correct me if I’m wrong but I heard Crimson Trace bought the Nikon devision of rifle scopes division and they have what appears to be a good warranty. Would love to see a review of their scopes and deep dive into it. But yes my 783 I’m going to be putting into MDT chassis system in the next two months with the side folding stock. I want to make it as compact for hunting trips as pissible.

Hey Nutnfancy! Love the channel and your reviews. Just a small point from the video in this 783. In the field you are slapping the bolt handle an extra 2-5 times on each reload. The video of Sean shows correct bolt technique...Up&Back then forward& down. 2 smooth motions and zero slapping at the bolt handle. Sean is smooth as butter. I know it’s a $300 rifle, but be kind to it.

I've taken many a deer with my 783 in .270WIN topped with a Leupold VX-2. Almost all heart shots and they all went down in seconds. I named her "Formality" because if I see deer and I have my 783, I'm dragging it out of the woods. I've read of a lot of 700 owners who got a 783 as a beater gun who ended up taking it out every time and making it their go-to. One day while dragging out a nice big bodied 9 pointer, I bumped a doe, dropped the buck, swung my 783 up into position and shot her on the run. Tossed her in the sled for a two-fer that day.
