The Shen Hao TFC 617-A panoramic camera is a thing of beauty. And unlike the more common Fuji GX617, Fuji G617, Gaoersi, Dayi, and Linhof Technorama 617 panoramic cameras, this 6x17 is a view camera, much like a traditional 4x5 or 8x10.
There are many advantages that come with using a view style camera in 6x17 analog photography. The use of graduated ND filters becomes possible because by viewing the image on ground glass, one can place the transition accurately. The shift/tilt movements of the lens and film standards allow for advanced techniques in composition and achieving maximum depth of field via the Scheimpflug principle. Also, lenses are lightweight and varied because this 6x17 camera uses standard 4x5 or 5x7 lenses on a Linhof style lens board.
I love my Shen Hao panoramic camera. And because this camera is so unique, versatile, and beautiful, I wanted to share it with all the film fanatics out there by taking you on a tour of what's in my camera bag. So, gear junkies, get your bib out to catch your drool.

    +Nick Carver Totally agree with you - love the format! Interestingly, Alain Briot mentioned a fellow named Jeff Mitchum who has a gallery in Vegas and many of his large prints are done with the GX617. In looking over his work online I think I've convinced myself I need to go to Vegas sometime and check out some of new photographer-owned (Mitchum, Rotella, Lik and Carrr) art galleries there. I think a stand-alone is a big risk, but I like the way +Stephen Oachs has set up his (California) as a combination gallery, learning and meeting space and workshop headquarters. I'd love to talk to him someday about his concept. I think it makes a lot of sense.

    Thank you, sir. When I want something vibrant and punchy, I love Fuji Velvia 100. But lately I've been gravitating towards more muted color palettes, so I reach for Kodak Portra 160. Both great film stocks.

  • @DustinHern

    @DustinHern

    8 жыл бұрын

    I've shot both, and I didn't have the world's most positive experience with Velvia. There were a number of factors involved, but I was shooting portraits with it on a dreary day, so it was just an experiment anyway. Have you given any thought to what you might do if Fujifilm discontinues Velvia? Seems inevitable at this point. All signs point to them pulling out of the film business altogether, except for Instax, which seems to be popular. I've seen some great things from Kodak Ektar. It even reminds me of Kodachrome (not that I've had the pleasure of shooting Kodachrome myself, but if you look at an old National Geographic...), which I believe was the goal.

  • @nickcarverphoto

    @nickcarverphoto

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Dustin Hern yeah that's not a good film for portraits. And since it's slide film, you have to be spot on with your exposure. I've been hearing about Velvia being discontinued for years. I'll believe it when I see it.

  • @artistjoh

    @artistjoh

    Dustin Hern As an 'oldie' who shot plenty of Kodachrome I can report that Kodachrome had a distinct color signature that I liked. The reason I like CCD medium format backs compared to CMOS is because a CCD sensor is more like Kodachrome than CMOS, which is more like Ektachrome. I applaud any efforts to create a film that is more Kodachrome-like. Other film types never quite got that 'artist's palette' quality to color that Kodachrome 64 had.

    Great Camera. I used to use view cameras. Those center ND filters where do you get them. I believe they have to match the focal length and the manufacture of the lens. So If it is a Nikkor lens do you get it from Nikon. Would it be a special order item? Once again you have a great camera system--a complete kit.

I just have a Yashica Mat 124G at the moment (and two Nikon F4s) but don't have the budget to get a 6x17 camera and its lenses just yet. I was wondering if it's worth doing stitched panoramas from a bunch of 6x6s? Or would I get all sorts of problems like each frame being scanned differently?

  • @nickcarverphoto

    @nickcarverphoto

  • @nickcarverphoto

    @nickcarverphoto

    7 жыл бұрын

    Ricky Wijaya Umar thanks! I have no need for an incident meter, the Pentax is more compact, and it's a much simpler design. The Sekonic has a lot of features, which is nice if you need those features, but the metering process I utilize is so simple and effective that I just don't need the features. To me it would be like carrying around a graphing calculator when I really only need a calculator that handles simple addition and subtraction. All the extra bells and whistles just get in the way. But that's just one guys opinion...

    An Epson flatbed's film holder will hold a strip of 3 6x6 negatives, which will be a little longer than a single 6x17. frame depending on the frame spacing of the 6x6s. Although one of the aftermarket holders with the glass insert would probably be better to keep the whole thing flat. I always scanned my 617 negatives in an Epson by just using the wet mount kit which is another option.

    Hey Nick - just came across your channel & am enjoying your videos - you seem very natural it's as if I'm sitting in the room with you.. In the vids where you have gone out into the desert to shoot mountains in the distance, I didn't see you using the front lens tilt. Wouldn't the Scheimpflug principle help get you a larger depth of field? Under what circumstances do you use the tilt?

    M D thanks for watching! That's a good question. I definitely utilize the Scheimpflug principle sometimes, but it isn't all that useful when I'm shooting very distant landscapes with no nearby foreground, which I've been doing a lot lately. The tilt is more evident when using a wide angle lens, but I tend to stick to normal and telephoto focal lengths.

Do you know if anyone makes a Hasselblad “V” type adapter for this camera? I have seen adapters for 4x5...BTW, I do have a Toyo 45A working beautiful! Love your videos .. Cheers, Alex

    In the book Darkroom Handbook, by John Langford, there's a brief piece of a 3-way camera. That would be cool if someone brought it back to life if the camera could be made with light weight materials.

    Not sure if you ever mentioned this in a video, but what filters do you use for your 617? Do you use a filter system? I'm looking to invest in something that would work for an array of large format cameras! As an aside, I got a Shenhao 617 because of your videos! I'm excited!

    Great video - is the preferred circle to cover 5 x7 or is 4x5 good enough? If 4 x 5 I would think you would not have much to work with for rise & fall adjustments? I have a ShenHao 4x5 which I love w/210, 90 and 150 Nikkors, so wondering if I went to 6x17 if my lenses would work or if I would need to get new lenses. Thanks for sharing your work.

    It depends on the specific lens. I always check the image circle size of the lens before I purchase. But generally speaking, you want lines that can cover 5x7.

    I'd love to try out some panorama work in 6x17... but a whole camera forit seems like a bit of a gamble (what if I don't fall in love with it, the way Nick has?) Shen Hao DOES make a 6x17 back for 4x5 cameras; is there any reason one would prefer a proper 617 bellows over converting my existing 4x5?

  • @nickcarverphoto

    The 6x17 roll back for 4x5 is a great option. I used that for awhile before I got this camera. But since I fell in love with 6x17, I decided to get a dedicated camera for it to make shooting easier and to give me access to more focal lengths.

    ***** Neat! Besides the cost, however, is there any reason I couldn't just buy lenses that offer 5x7 coverage? I doubt I'd focus close for panorama, so bellows extension probably shouldnt be an issue... Guess I know what I'll be researching the next 3 evenings. Thanks for your response, it's very helpful!!

    Hi Nick, I wanted to know which center ND filter you are using for the Nikoor SW 90 mm. One of the reasons I got this lens over the Schneider was that the data sheet stated that center ND filter is not needed, but recently I started to encounter falloff when I shift to its max in my Shen Hao. Thanks in advance.

  • @nickcarverphoto

    @nickcarverphoto

    8 жыл бұрын

    Yeah the light fall off really isn't bad for that lens, especially on 4x5. I only got the center ND because I started using this lens on 6x17 and the wider format shows it a bit more. Even then I don't always use it. I got the Schneider center ND designed for their 90mm. I'm sure it's not an exact match to the Nikon, but it's close enough for me.

  • @abdallah11882

    I see, you are correct, I only got the fall off when I do extreme shifts, which is like using the 6x17. Thanks for your response. I will give it a try using the Schneider filter, hopefully I won't get uneven sky :)

    @@nickcarverphoto yes good to know, I have just 'pulled the trigger' too, a linhof 5x7", with 4x5" reducing back, single sheet holders, so I do get the ground-glass folding thing, just have to keep the tripod head clear, so you don't damage the glass while dropping it ( on it's hinge-into the 'shooting' position); My tripod for this rig is a Manfrotto 058 with an 029 head, should handle the 5kg's of the linhof without a sweat. (PS, the Ebony that you are thinking of is the RSW-45, a non-folder, architecture camera; this has Titanium focus/locking knobs :-)) ).

I am a college student who is about to graduate I don't have the money as of now to invest in you type of set up but would love to get into the panoramic world. • @nomadben

    I'd recommend a reasonably priced regular medium-format camera, and just crop to whatever panoramic aspect ratio you want to go for. It'll have the same effect in the final image, you just won't have quite as much detail as the larger 6x17 negative.
