What Your Doctor Will Look Like In The Future

The hospitals of the future might be drastically different than the ones we go to today. It's likely that we will no longer see things like stethoscopes and white lab coats, and we also might have supercomputers replacing doctors! Join Trace and Anthony and learn about the reasoning behind the drastic possible changes to the doctor's office that we're used to.

morning morality A game of chest? It's chess. The power computing power to replicate a human mind is beyond us, although I do realize you wouldn't necessarily need to replicate a human mind to be diagnosed by a computer. The biggest factor is funding. And a huge part of why these things are so expensive is because there are monopolies in the health care industry. Big companies don't really care for new and emerging technologies that can potentially damage their ability to harvest money from the people so effectively. This is why most of the not-so-expensive health care plans won't pay for the chiropractor they would rather wait until you are injured and give you pills and send you to physical therapy instead of dealing with the root cause. Not to mention doctors receiving payouts from big pharmo companies. Do me a favor and look up the statistics about how many people are on what drugs and in what age groups, it's disgusting. They would rather give pills than encourage fitness and reduced air pollution levels and GREATLY IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF FOOD THAT POOR PEOPLE CAN AFFORD. On a per calorie basis, diets composed of whole grains, fish, and fresh vegetables and fruit are far more expensive than refined grains, added sugars and added fats. It’s not a question of being sensible or silly when it comes to food choices, it’s about being limited to those foods that you can afford. And btw using movies as an example for something like this is silly. There's a lot more to this than computers being smarter than us.

As +Jan Škopek said (hope that works lol) the appearance of a doctor is a superficial issue when compared to transmitting of virus and flu on the sleeves. And I don't think being nervous at the doctors is caused by the outfit the doctor is wearing heh... Rather it's the environment as a whole.

As a med student, I'm all for short sleeves and more technology. Medicine has a lot of problem advancing for the reluctance of both medical experts and patients. Medicine is said to be the most "humane" of sciences, and people have internalized that humanism means direct physical contact; and medicine means white coats.

Anything to make doctors more efficient, I'd say. Hell, I expect the same level of trustworthiness from my doctor as I do from my tattoo artist, and his work clothes are usually a t-shirt and baggy camo pants. As have been said before, the clothes doesn't make the man (and in my book, that includes doctors as well). Trust should be 100% earned (in the case of doctors, through the power of their education and prior practice), not projected through their garments. As for using machines to get a rough diagnosis and saving the doctor some time... I'm all for it, as long as there's a qualified healthcare professional acting as a buffer between that machine and the treatment I'm receiving. We're not technologically advanced enough to completely entrust machines with something as important as our healthcare... yet.

As a future med student I'm kind off bummed out with that proposal because I really wanted to wear a white coat! Maybe it's a little silly but that's just my own personal nonsense and can see why people would want to change that. As for the tech side I can also agree that although it can help is is still very important to have that "human side" in medicine where the doctors interact with their patients.

I may not be an MD, but after having spent hundreds of hours volunteering as a translator at free health clinics I've definitely seen "white coat syndrome" in action. Personally I'm skeptical about whether changing a doctor's uniform is going to solve the issue. It might help somewhat, but even with the most friendly doctors dressed in more casual clothing many people often get nervous during medical examinations. For many patients often just knowing that they're being evaluated by someone with a lot of experience and education who could potentially be making important and/or costly choices about their health can send people's blood pressure way up. Having said that, the more clear-cut sanitation benefits are obviously worth it and I suppose that even if it only helps a small amount of people not be misdiagnosed with high blood pressure that can only be a good thing.

I definitely think doctors should have contact with patients personally, though the amount of contact is up for debate. I feel like using the computer to get the probabilities would be fine, as long as the doctor tells the patient the final results in person, as well as performing any examinations that may need to be done. I'm fine with doctors shucking the lab coats. I'm pretty sure mine just wears slacks and a button-up shirt, anyway.

A computerized doctor that evaluated based on previous medical history is great in theory, but in practice, when a doctor evaluates a patient post "computer exam," you've got expect a high rate of confirmation bias (unless it's a double blind). Seeing results often make you look for those symptoms, rather than starting at 0 and diagnosing traditionally.

I can't see things like the stethoscope being replaced. It can be augmented with a further device, but not replaced. We do not want doctors that know more about the graphic interface of their smart heart device than they do about the actual S1 and S2 sounds of a healthy heart's "lub-dub" sounds. Medical progress is not to be measured in how many patients a doctor can visit within an hour. Instead, this kind of device is a progress towards the capitalistic commercialization of medicine. More patients seen per hour = more money. There is no way I would ever consider going to a doctor that doesn't even have the appropriate training to use a stethoscope, his own ears, and his medical knowledge (knowledge from his human brain... NOT from his GoogleGlass) to diagnose a murmur or arrhythmia. I love this technology revolution we are having but there is simply no replacement for good old fashioned medical practice that allows the doctor to make direct assessment of the patient. A digital stethoscope will never replace a standard percussive stethoscope. A digital thermometer (which relies on accurate programming) will never replace a mercury thermometer (which works on immutable physical laws). Etc Etc.

  • @EricJW

    @EricJW

    10 жыл бұрын

I sort of agree with you, but at the same time, I can't help but think the same sort of reaction happened at the time of the stethoscope's invention. "What new confabulation is this? Stethoscopes? Heresy! We wants our doctors focused on us, not some new-fangled gadgetry!" In the end, I have to stress that these are all just tools to gather information and as radical as some of the new stuff may seem, it's really just a new source of information to add into the arsenal. If the new arrangement doesn't improve things, we can always drop it. Also, a digital thermometer may be more fundamentally removed from the actual temperature measurement versus a mercury thermometer, but it doesn't change the fact that the digital thermometer is still a reliable way to read temperature and can be read with greater precision over analog varieties.

  • @fullyawakened

Totally agree with everything you said, but I think that some technologies create a potential where a doctor might not be required to learn basic skills such as heart monitoring with their own ears. My concern is that with a big corporation sponsoring the use of a device like this that it might not be easily dropped from practice despite it's potential hazards. I see a future where a doctor is only useful in the context of his machines, with no real skills of his/her own. Combine that practice with a typical emergency like a major power outage and you have a hospital full of machines and doctors that are completely useless in the time when you need them most. So I am all for this stuff as an augmentation to real skills, but definitely not to replace hands-on medical practice.

I have found that so far having a doctor wearing more casual clothing is much less stressful. As for having a computer as a doctor--or at least a preliminary doctor before human input--is good as it may be even easier for someone to talk to a suped-up cleverbot. We may even need them more now so that human doctors can help more people and even break language barriers in foreign countries.

As a professional of the medical field I do agree that futuristic gadgets could help quite a lot in the delivery of health care of each patient; however, a human being should never be replaced with a machine. Computers could make faster decisions and perhaps even give more accurate diagnosis, but there are so many more details about a career in medicine that I strongly believe that the use of computers and robots will result in a disaster. A computer is still very primitive when compared to a human brain. I am sure that any person who has worked in health care field will agree with me.

I think you're logic--whilst the direction is clear--is flawed. The Latin root "hospes" that is in both words just means a stranger or foreigner. So in hospitality it becomes being kind to strangers while in hospitals it becomes healing strangers. On a side note though, I just want the crazy costs of hospital visits to go down in the US. Maybe having something like an AI like Watson giving a broad diagnosis will cut down the price of visits in some way.

I think lightworkers will become more reliable doctors of the future because they heal the client on a spiritual level which transforms all the other parts of that person into their natural state of happiness.

Speaking as a medical student, I feel that the job of a physician is dying out. Objectively speaking, I can't see human doctors in the future since computers are much less fallible. But then again, I don't think there it will carry completely through, just because of that "human touch."

No because so many things could go wrong with a computer it could lose power and I just feel more comfortable with a human doctor

I don't mind of how the doctor looks as long he/she isn't a robot because I feel like the robot would be like, oh no we have to cut off your arm now and I'll be like, it's just cut a little bit and broken no need to cut it off! To late the surgery is done. NOOOOO!!!!

My Doctor will sound Scottish, he will live in a blue box that can travel through time. he will wear a long sleeve dark blue jacket over a white button-up shirt. I'll begin seeing him this August.

I feel like when ever my doctor is filling out an electronic medical record he has a certain skill to it. he can type and and talk to me while typing which impresses me all the time. It all depends on the doctor

I'm in favor of "de-clinical-izing" health care. White suits and walls do seem rather intimidating. More color and designs look a lot warmer and more inviting.

this is so wrong. everyone knows the best diagnosis & treatment advice you can possibly get comes from posting your symptoms on a random web forum. also, the "talk to watson while the doctor uses intuition" bit, reminded me of the "hes in-scanable" scene from idiocrasy
