The majority of agencies are a joke. I think most people know this. They call you to come in for an interview, they test you, they tell you "you did very well!" then you fill out some paperwork, and you leave thinking you're all set up, and then NOTHING. Some of them need you to call every week to let them know of your availability, which I think is a joke as well. I'm convinced a lot of these companies post on job boards for other reasons such as to advertise, and/or to harvest info from resumes for their own purposes plus I'm sure the people that work at many of these agencies are getting some kind of credit/commission for bringing in new "candidates" in order to grow their database.

Avoid Agencies like cancer. Usually, on your first assignment they'll hook you with a long term / temp to perm assignment. Don't ever expect to get hired on. The client will likely let you go before the 5th month without warning. Afterwards your agency will only give you one day / one week assignments. Only accept offers if they're paying a living wage. Depending on experience, ask for 15-20 per hour. You'll need at least 1 month of employment to qualify for unemployment benefits

Since I'm retiring I only want jobs that last a few days or maybe a week or two. I thought that's what temp agencies were about--not to find me a job.

Don't waste with employment agencies. Use some savvy and apply directly to companies, even if on a speculative basis. Grab a copy of Napoleon Hill's book Think & Grow Rich then read through the chapter on Organized Planning. Go to it!

I agree with most of the people here. I feel like I waste my time going to the interview and signing the paper and then, later on, I don't hear anything from them. They sound very promising and make you feel like they are there to help but then they disappear. What's the point signing up if you are the one doing most of the job search?

Well, maybe recruiters should be paying YOU a fee for being on their books OR a penalty for not finding you work within a given period of time. Maybe a petition should be started for just that. hopefully your in work now as this is a fairly old post.

They'll make you go work anywhere just so they can get a commission. One time, I went to this agency, they found me a job at a pie factory, it was working on a line. I went and was working on a line, people kept saying "faster!", "faster!", "pick up the pace!", etc. The job was supposed to be from 1:30 pm to 12:00 am, but we got to go home earlier because a machine broke. Afterwords, the supervisor and me met with the boss, the boss asked the supervisor how I did, the supervisor said "he has to pick up the pace". The next day, I'm getting ready to go to the job, then the phone rings, it's the employment agency. The lady on the phone from the agency told me not to go back, that they don't want me and won't be needing me. I was pretty upset, then my mom got on the phone and said "Well, is he gonna be paid for the time he put in?", the lady said "yes, he will", my mom then said "he better, if he isn't, we'll contact the department of labor".

Don't do that because they're takes your money .... Much better to find a job with the company right away . Also some companies they dealing with those agency to get advantage from the employee belong to them like the benefit and last pay hour and and they don't pay insurance and they still promise you promise which is for example Subaru car in lafayette Indiana they don't hire more than 3 years from the agency which is agency pay $13 when you get hired and Subaru they will pay $27 cuz everybody will stop working through the agency you will get the 25-27

If you haven't done it yet, DON'T DO IT! Job agencies are a joke and shady as hell. The only thing that's an even bigger joke than job agencies are the companies who use them. My advice to you: when you're seasonal job ends, sign up for unemployment. It's not the greatest thing, but at the very least if you're on unemployment you'll have the time to apply and interview at your own leisure. If you're working at a temp job the company you're working at might end your contract if you miss a day for an interview (they know full well no one wants to be a temporary employee, yet they'll punish you for not wanting to be a temp at their company). I worked as a temp because I was desperate and needed something and I had to pay bills. I should've stayed unemployed while looking for full time work because when I actually did get scheduled for interviews it's scary as hell because I'd be taking a huge gamble. The place I interview at might say no, and the temp job might end my contract. Take my advice, dude. Don't do it.

@@angelbeats8996 that's good. I know unemployment isn't the greatest thing out there but it's meant to help you get back on your feet. As much as people claim temp agencies can help you with just that, they don't. Just take this time while you're on unemployment to look for something that you'd really like doing.

These comments are sad. I have only had one experience with an agency and got placed rather quickly. Next thing I knew I was hired full time with health insurance. Bottom line if you have the skills, speak well, have education you will find a job with no problem. Yes I am a black woman so you can't say it's because I'm white. It's because I'm educated.

+tcampbell2186 some of them offer you health insurance, that is why the real employer use the job agencies so they do not have to pay health insurance and benefits like retirement one, 401k none of that, I have aMaster Degree in Computer Science and they want me to pass a freacking typing test to get hired for a possition that I used to performed at that time direct with the company and in the reality that same job possition do not required that, so My Master is not enought for that possitiion, BS

+Josue Rodriguez hi, I live in NYC too. It's a hustle out here but someone if not your own common sense should have told u that you were accumulating too much debt for a college education. Not being mean, but at 20 I had the forethought to drop out of a private school because once I crushed the numbers I saw that the debt would likely not match the salary. Student debt is a totally different conversation. I'm just talking about how helpful agencies can be. Sorry for your debt but u can possibly pay it off or just think of it as a life long bill or a pet that needs to be maintained. Peace.

+Josue Rodriguez not for nothing after seeing that they wanted me to pass a typing test I would have watched KZread and practiced until I got my speed up. That's the difference between the winners and the losers. You can't be deterred. You have to be willing to do whatever it takes. That's why I'm employed. I don't play. And yes I'm making 6figs. Just saying.
