Hi - Great channel and overview! My family and I live in Foz, and love it. We are Swiss/Portuguese (I am Swiss, and my wife is Portuguese), and have been living in the area for the past 3 years with our two daughters (2 & 4). One important consideration for expats living in Porto with children, is that many of the international schools / bilingual schools are located in the area. In Foz, you have the French School, German School, British School, as well as CLIP which is British/American. Therefore, Foz is one of the neighborhoods of Porto with the highest concentration of expats. I am aware that many expats will be looking for a more "authentic" experience, but the above is an important consideration for many. Keep posting great content!

Well done! You articulated what being from Foz (or living in Foz) means very well. You are posh, you speak differently from everyone else, you live differently (on account of all the money you have...), you dress differently, your views are usually conservative, etc. That's a stereotype, of course, but it's true of many people. I taught for a year at the public school in Foz (Garcia de Orta) and I had a lot of students and colleagues who fit right into this stereotype! I wouldn't live there even if I could afford it, but I love walking along the sea and the river. I'm not much of a beach person either (plus the sea is freezing!).

Wow 😲 I’m Portuguese originally from the Azores but living here in the USA South Carolina in Greenville and I never knew about this lovely side from the city of Porto, it reminds me of the city of Newport Rhode Island where I used to live near by which I really missed a lot 😢 because I used to live 20 minutes away from Newport where I used to spend lots of times in the beach walking around by the pier and eat out with my old friends tanks again guys for sharing these lovely places so people can see that we 2 have good places in Portugal ❤️😘👍🥂

I lived in Rhode Island in 1984 and I too spent a Summer in Newport and does look a lot like Foz. Good observation, Joe Marc!

I like foz seems like my type of suburb ,beach ,beautiful houses ,not so noise ,clean and beautiful 🤩

Thanks for the overview of the Foz do Douro section of Porto. As I mentioned in a previous comment, I was in Porto two years ago, with one of my sons & daughter-in-law and we stayed in Foz. I know we missed a lot of things to see in Porto, when we were there, so thanks for covering different aspects of of the city. Your tour if Foz, especially, brought back fond memories. Thank you.

Thank you for all the insight. Really helped us to see neighborhoods etc..We just moved to Foz from Miami beach and LOVE it! We’ve been in Porto for about 2 months with our 2 dogs and (too many) cats and were staying in a short stay in the Boavista area, thinking we wanted to try city life again but it was a difficult transition for our dogs.Once we saw the beach promenade and all the gorgeous neighborhood parks/ green spaces in Foz, we had to move here. Found a hidden gem of an apt with a huge private garden for a very reasonable price too. Ppl here are incredibly cool and friendly (same for everyone we have encountered in Porto actually) . Great for pets.

Very well done. Foz Velha feels like another city, because it historically was a separated municipality from Porto city. It was merged into Porto in 1836, and recently Foz, Nevogilde and Aldoar were merged into one "freguesia". The new neghborhoods, Like Praça do Império or Lordelo do Ouro were urbanized in mid XXth century. There is Parque da cidade, for a relaxed outdoor time, and Serralves is a good place to visit, despite the price... There is no metro, but several bus routes run every 10 minutes or so, to Ribeira and Boavista, so no big deal. The new metro line was anounced, but will not be ready anytime soon.

Interesting series you guys are making and an eye opener to Porto's different districts and neighbourhoods. This feels like the Cascais version of Porto. Definitely like to explore including the cafes and restaurants. Great share!

Another great video. 👏 I’ve been thinking I could retire in Foz since you guys checked out some apartments there months back. Funny, the first time I was in the area, I didn’t really rate it. The sea is SO cold so for me, it kinda defeats the purpose of being bayside. However, given its proximity to Serralves, Matosinhos, Afurada and that continuous stretch of ocean that seems to go on forever, it’s undeniably a special place. Thanks again for this fabulous series.

To your point Foz gives Porto another dimension beyond the old town but if you’re looking for the historical feeling of a European city, its not your place. One question though: why did you leave out Parque da Cidade? Its such a fantastic place and also a game changer for families!

Yeah, we agree, Pedro. We considered it but because of it's location north of Boavista Ave and it bordering Matosinhos and Senhora da Hora, we just omitted it. It's a GREAT park though. - Josh & Kalie

It's too expensive for most people to live in, obviously. If you could afford to live there, you definitely would. About visiting, it's fine, I guess, just don't invade it too often. The people who can actually afford to live there should be able to properly enjoy "the bubble" they are paying for without much disturbance.

Agree I’ve lived like that and it was great raising kids. If I came to Porto now alone I’d want to be close to downtown.

Was there 35 years ago, wow how different, LOL. Thanks. Loved this area I remember, was not that trendy years ago. What a treat. I do remember the boardwalk. At the time guidebooks said it was an bourgeois and boring place LOL, the rough guide was very dismissive. LOL.

Hey, Tami. We would love to really but contextually it just wouldn't make sense without showing people inside the places and talking about T1, T2, T3 and so on. You could find a T1 for €550 but you could also find one for €1,000. You might get a T3 for €1,000 or one for €3000. You know? Given the time and resources, we wouldn't mind doing a real estate episode in the different neighborhoods. - Josh & Kalie

Just found your channel today (via Veronica). We loved the Foz neighborhood when we stayed in an Airbnb there in 2019. You mentioned that it was the most expensive area in Porto - how much are we talking? Do any of your video get into details about rents in Porto?

Hi, Stephanie. Thanks for finding us and dropping a comment here. If you look at rents and price per square meter compared to other neighborhoods, it's the most expensive. We had a project run of real estate videos there interrupted in the lockdown, but we hope to create more real estate content back in Porto at some point. We do have a rental video, however, it's in the city center and not Foz. Best thing to do to compare prices would be to use a site like www.idealista.pt Hope that helps for now until we get a video or two done. Stay in touch, Stephanie. - Josh & Kalie

Foz is the third most expensive place on Portugal with a 2 bedroom apartment costing between 700k to 1 million, but it's an amazing place, a lot of high people live there, including football players, ministers, etc

I’m planning to move my family to torreira from Canada. So many good places but this is home to my wife and her family. Not far from avairo

Thanks, Kathy. Sorry about that I don't think we mentioned in each video that it's out of 5. It's the 7 most livable neighborhoods in Porto so nothing is less than a 3 out of 5 for us personally. It's the Atlantic so it's colder water for sure. There is surfing and such. The yahtch clubs are further north in Matosinhos. - Josh & Kalie

What are rental costs there for 1 or 2 BR mid-scale places in this neighborhood? Would you think it is a good, quiet, safe one for a retired couple? Not retired yet, but planning. Thank you for all great info.

Mid-scale €700-1,200 but it really all depends however that would be the general range. Rentals in this area can soar because it's a holiday destination so good ALs tend to go on the nightly market or weekly market rates. This area is certainly good, quiet, and safe not just for retirees but anyone looking for good, quiet and safe. The pace of life is slower and a bit fancier than the rest of Porto. You're welcome. If you go to Spain are you breaking your continuous presence (6 months ) in Portugal? When I was in Portugal I drove to Spain because it was very close and easy to get to. I was still within the EU and Schengen zone and ny passport wasn’t stamped at all. Just wandering

By car, the question might be, how would they know? Yes, you've broken continuous presence as it needs to be in Portugal otherwise people could get have a Portugal residence visa but live elsewhere in the EU/Schengen.

I'm guessing that you aren't going to cross the river as part of this series, but Vila Nova has some pretty great places!

When a person is "from Foz" it can mean that person is quite snob. Like, when a rich peeson looks down on you as if they were better. Depends on the context, though.

Hi Olivia, there is 100% not a metro line that goes to Foz do Douro. There is one in Boavista, Ramalde, and Matosinhos. The ones in Matoshinhos would be the closest but that's not Foz. - Josh & Kalie

@@oliviaperrin1146 okay, so if we can agree to saying that Castelo do Queijo (there's a debate about that we know) is on the edge of the neighborhood of Foz, then it's a mile walk (1.6 km) from Matosinhos Sul, which is the closest metro. We would not consider that to be servicing the neighborhood for the purpose of living there. - Josh & Kalie

Foz is Porto and it is not far from the center. I am Portuguese and I live in Matosinhos, side by side with Foz. A good place and near from other places of the city.

Foz= place where a river or other watercourse flows into the sea, another river or a lake;

Amazing…you guys must be Americans…you’re in Portugal and yet you pronounce the word “Jardim “ in Spanish not Portuguese. Double check with the locals how to pronounce “Jardim do Passeio “. I was wondering as well…why is it that when Portuguese folks moves to North America you call them “immigrants “… When Anglos move to Portugal 🇵🇹 they’re “expats”… this type of behavior is known as “Anglo-centrism”, that’s euphemism for “Anglo-arrogance”.

We used to live in Spain and know some Spanish so unfortunately, that's our default. We're learning Portuguese now. Sometimes we make mistakes. Actually often we make mistakes. We don't define immigrant or expat the way you're stating. Immigrant has to do with a long term/permanent relocation in mind. Expat is more temporary or indefinite. The intentionality is the important thing in it, but either way, it doesn't matter to us personally. Immigrant isn't derogatory. Immigrants and expats are by definition migrants and foreigners in their new country. @@ExpatsEverywhere : Hi again…no judgment was intended. You two appear to be wonderful Humans, and in retrospective my phraseology was far from my intentions, so again I apologize. What I meant 😪 is to convey to you that Lusophones, specifically Luso-Americans (Brazilians) tend to be very “touchy and Sensitive” to Anglo-Americans assuming that in Brazil we speak Spanish not Portuguese. When we tend to clarify that error, their (the anglos) response is “potato potato, tomato tomato” (see the TV movie “bed and breakfast with Dean Cain, you'll see what I mean). I lived in North America for over 4 decades, and countless times when I told them I was born in Brazil, they start babbling in Spanish. So it grows on you, and again, you're right, my issues are with others not you. Anglo Americans hate when we generalize the USA and yet they’re forever generalizing Brazil. So go in peace and yes it was my first time visiting your channel and I really liked the content. Great 😊 job. I will watch the other publications. Again forgive me for being such an ass.
