What You Must do Before You Ever Consider Soft Proofing

Before you can begin to use the SoftProofing feature in Photoshop, Lightroom or Qimage, you to have these three things Nailed Down!
1: Your Printer MUST be able to produce a perfect print from an UN EDITED and UNALTERED "STANDARD IMAGE".
letting the Printer Driver control color.
2: You Monitor MUST be calibrated with a HardWare Calibrator to the proper Luminance for your editing ambient conditions as well as color accuracy.
3: You have to be able to now print a perfect print from your now Edited Images using the same driver settings you used to print the STANDARD IMAGE!
4 : Now and only now can you rely on softproofing to simulate how a given ICC profile will affect your image before you commit to PRINT!
The next video will be a hands on demo on the computer using PS - LR and Qimage!

Jose, am doing what you have suggested, printing the test images which I have downloaded to obtain a reference point for my printers. The file I have is called PDI target you have shown it many times. On my A1430, I did a head alignment, then I printed a nozzle pattern, which was only missing a couple of nozzles, then I printed a purge sheet and all looked really good, then I bit the bullet and put in a sheet of Epson Premium Glossy, to print the test page, it printed beautifully EXCEPT that there is a GREEN cast on the blacks, ALL the other colours look great. In the strip on the side for the black hue graduations 0, 5, 10 are ok, but 15,20 25 are almost fully dark green, then from 30 upwards the blacks and greys assume normal hues, Now I have printed a Qimage unclog using black only and it is perfect. Around the Strawberries the shadows are green, and on the babies faces the shadows are green, but the young girl on the left of the page still has black hair, so it seems that it is only happening where the darker greys need to be. Any thoughts?

FIXED IT - FIXED IT.....the green cast that is....I forgot to ensure that ONLY the PRINTER DRIVER CONTROLS COLOUR....I had a ICC selected as well..FOOL...using Qimage to print. But I switched to a cheaper semi gloss paper to try to sort myself out, before going back to the expensive stuff, on this paper I still get a slight cast from 20, 25, 30, 35 on the black graduations, where the grey tones for highlighting purposes are the green is not noticeable. But then I put in a piece of Epson Premium Glossy and whamo, I got what I was looking for a magnificent image. I am very very happy and have learned a heap. Thank you for your perseverance is repeating over and over again how to do stuff. You are legend Joe!

I'm not sure if you are referring to this program or not but one thing I found very useful is to profile the printer with Canon Print Studio Pro. I recommend printing the two sheets in 13" x 19" so the colors can be seen better. The color, contrast and brightness can all be adjusted to match your monitor. The brightness adjustment is especially useful because turning down the brightness of the monitor to compensate for prints that are too dark is not as good a solution. I think this program may also be useful to someone who for whatever reason does not have their monitor calibrated. Another good thing is you can use your own images for the profile.

Its not a profile. You are simply performing the Pattern Print prcess which is just a collage of test prints to allow you to nail down the adjustments you need to enter nn the adjustment sliders to get the print to come out just the way you want it to. So remember this is not calibration. You should be able to print with PSP and get perfect prints without having to resort to Pattern Print. Assuming you monitor is hardware calibrated. This is useful if you want to stray from the default neutral look and need visual samples to choose from. If you have to rely on it to get a neutral print then something is wrong with your workflow.

Hi Jose I have a very straight forward simple question I cannot find an answer to anywhere. When editing a raw/tiff photo in Lightroom, in the 16 bit prophoto colour space, without any other colour space embedded, what conversion is happening when it is printed, assuming there is any conversion at all? I.e. - edit raw image - soft proof - THEN go directly to print the photo WITHOUT exporting the photo to a file in sRGB or Adobe? Is it printing from the same working space with 16 bit - potentially not getting optimal results?

Yes but only you determine that er can do it letting IT control color. Watch my videos on printing standard images. Before you jump to printing with ICC profiles make sure your printer is working properly without extra manipulations.

Now gone through the exercise on the R1900, after sorting out a few carts that needed filling, did a couple of tests then put in the good paper, sadly no grays, good blacks but grays all green, starting at about number 35 on the scale. But I am Impressed with other colours, any thoughts?

So you are nnmow abnle to print a linearly neutral black to white ramp on the 1430 but not n the r1900? Remenber that boty these printrers on only have one black. The r1900 has pk and mk but still only one is used depending on the paper. So it is very difficult for them to print linear neutral black to white ramp and so, B&W prints. Only a custom profile will solve that.

I was afraid of that, but still I thought it was worse than it needed to be. I decided that I had to do more, so ran more nozzle checks, found the Magenta was not working all that well, got that fixed, then found the MK was not working at all, got that fixed, doing many purges and cart top ups etc. Now I have a PERFECT print, yahooo....it is magnificent, now i have my BENCHMARK, with the last of what will be my OEM ink supply, moving onto PC inks at the next refill. The print is so good that I feel like framing it!! After listening to your video again, you mentioned the affect of Magenta missing and when I looked at my first print with the green cast I carefully examined the places where Magenta should have been and it was not there. Of course with this ink set you have Red and Orange so you still get those and you have to look very hard to realise that you do not have Magenta. I am sure that is what the issue was, as the MK would probably not have been used due to printing glossy. I am a very happy hobby printer!

I know this is an older video and I probably won't get an answer but here goes. You mention to print a controlled print from somewhere on the internet probably the one with the red strawberries use that profile and that color space and all of this being OEM. to late watched this a long time after starting to use third party inks, I only watched this because I am now switching to Signature Edition all on a 100 pro. Is there a process to follow to make all of this work and is this going to be an issue everytime I try a new paper?? 🤔

The way to print an Evaluation Image is to use A Matching paper for which there is a matching paper cboice in the driver. The image is not to be tampered with. So you open the image and print it letting the driver control color. In the driver ColornManuak Adjustment you click to open it and choose Matching and ICM. The you must choose and print on a Canon paper like PRO LUSTER. print. The results will show how accurate the printer can reproduce an Evakuation Image ( yes the strawberry one ). When you switch to another non Canon paper you will need a custom and useba different method to print. This letting the application control color though that custom paper profile and them turning Color Matching from ICM to NONE.

You can only calibrate with an external spectrophotometer and its software. Not just software.

Yes and no. If the screen display cause a shift depending on viewing angle then it is very difficult to get consistent results. Normally lap tops are not good candidates unless their displays look the same regardless of viewing angle.

Well how imperfect is it? I will NEVER be 100% perfect but you want to achieve a pleasant natural result. Do not resort to the monitor at this time. Are you letting the driver control color using Epson sRGB ( if printing on an EPSON ) ? What Printer and paper and Inks are you using?

I'm printing with a Canon Pro 100 using Precision Color inks and Red River Ultra Pro Satin 4. After viewing the print in better light, I actually think the PC ink test print to be more satisfactory than the OEM ink print: more pleasing contrast and color saturation. One of the lighter reds seems a bit weak I guess I was expecting 100% perfection. Looks like I really didn't have a problem after all. Thanks, Jose.

I said delta due to my military background. The profile is D50. That pertains to the color temperature of the viewing illumination. Go to www.precisioncolors.com then the canon section and then the pro-100 and the. The ICC profile section and a nally the D50 section and look up the paper you are using. Now download it. You must be using PC inks.

You will need to print a standard image with the driver controlling color. Do not edit the image at all. Simply open it and print it and evaluated it for correct rendition. If it looks correct and does not on the monitor then you know what you need to do. Join my FaceBook group and get the file. Go to my channels main page and click the F round icon link on the lower right of the image of my print room. Request membership and I will approve it, click on the FILES link on the left for your images. "Evaluation Image" tiff.
