WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW CAN HURT YOU

When we first bought our sailing catamaran Reboot we moved her to Charleston because it was the closest ocean to our home in Atlanta and it’s a great city.
But what we didn’t know about sailing in Charleston is that the tides are incredibly challenging, especially for rookie sailors.
After a few terrifying episodes of trying to dock in currents stronger than our engines could go, we decided to change locations and not fight the tides so much. We sailed very little that first year and almost gave up on our dream of becoming sailors.
As for the Airbnb, most marinas don’t allow them because of safety concerns, and there’s a good reason for it! Living on a boat at dock is not like a condo in Florida-I’ve seen people swimming in the marina despite all the posted signs about stray current-what you don’t know can kill you on a boat.
Hi, I'm Robin!
I'm a nerd who bought a catamaran five years ago with my husband with zero experience (yeah zero, zip, zilch on a boat)
Follow along as we experience the awesome and the awful on our trusty S/V Reboot, a Lagoon 380S2 sailing catamaran.

It's good of you to post this "warning" to the new boating folks. I'm not sure what I'd do if I ever found anybody aboard my schooner that I didn't know. There would be a swimming lesson involved, at the very least. And yet that is just something 'minor' compared to the actual REAL dangers people should think about when they're renting a slip somewhere. In most cases, liveaboards at a marina are a VERY good thing and they'll watch after your boat for you even if you didn't ask them to. If a line parts or a fender drops, they'll just hop over and fix it and most of the time you'll never even know about it. Now, those kind of folks I wouldn't even mind if they broke into my liquor locker! I'm sure they'd have a reason for it and with good folks like that ANY reason would be good enough for me -- so long as they saved a cold one for me! BTW, I'm up a little north of you guys. In Baltimore Harbor.

I've come back to my boat to folks onboard drinking. Luckily I knew them and we had a ball. Strangers I'm not to sure of.

Well, it depends on whether the 'strangers' brought enough booze for everyone.

That’s a lot of current. Ya make good points. Parking your boat for a year one better check out the marina first. Kinda like the possible negatives. Example nice solid well kept house for sale $20,000 less than market price ya go see it …nice yard nice house inside and good very good asking price ( only one thing a biker gang has a club house next door !!! )
